I got hooked on pennies back in 1956-57 Our neighbor , Chuck Janes ,had a donut shop . He told me every time an Indian head penny crossed his counter, he tossed it into a cigar box. He also saved Barber dimes . He said he only saved coins that weren't worn slick. I found this out one evening when I showed him my meager Indian head collection. Him and his wife, Dot would play cards with my parents. I would go around the table looking for old pennies and Indian nickels. I think back then, everyone had a few Indian head pennies stashed in a drawer someplace, just like we have old copper pennies now, and they would eventually just spend them. But , as a kid I was shocked that he would still get them in his shop. He said , "Yes." like it was no big deal. So..... I set my target date at 1920. I would only save pennies from before that date. Years later, it was only pennies before 1940. Old Chuck Janes had a cigar box under his kitchen sink level to the top with Indians and another box of Barber dimes. That was the incentive that started me saving pennies. Never bought rolls or boxes from the bank. Only went through pocket change. It's a habit I've never been able to break. Chuck also collected stamps. Another obsession he helped launch me on. He'd give me envelopes of old United States stamps. He gave me his childhood arrow head collection too [ that I still have today] He also gave me my first Gilbert chemistry set. [The bottles were all made of wood] Everyone should have a neighbor like old Chuck Janes. I'm an old man myself, now. I try to start kids off collecting.... anything. It's a sad world we live in today and what's more wholesome than a kid collecting stuff that others shun, or think it's just junk. Just my thoughts tonight........ 9:30.... past my bedtime.

Yes, I heard copper pennies. I've got probably close to a 100 pounds. We'll continue to go through boxes and find more because copper prices will go up, especially when the dollar crashes.
Hopefully one day, boxes of Pennie’s will be free, we only need copper to double in price for that to happen (500 copper Pennie’s at 5 cents)! Happy hunting Craig!
Not sure who the penny hoarders expect to sell all those pennies to. Personally I don't ever expect government to ever allow you to melt them for profit. Secondly if you do find someone dumb enough to buy them for copper content the shipping cost would eat up all gains. I do hoard copper but I would never hoard pennies, I would probably rather buy scrap copper with those pennies and hoard something I can sell quickly to most any scrap yard.
@howardlittell8834 Pretty sure that is inaccurate. There was a guy doing it awhile back and congress passed a law to stop him. Pretty sure no scrap yard will give you anything for them at least any I have heard of and I have been scrapping for many years.

@@paulcoenen7918 I know they do tax it unlike gold and silver here in Arizona though many gladly purchase the big bars when they were on sale and most places would still provide free shipping if over $200 purchase. Would be nice if they removed the tax on copper, but would take some doing for sure.
I bought my first box yesterday. I have been through 35 rolls so far and have recovered one dime, ten Wheaties, and one Canadian copper. I have yet to weigh my pre-82's to see my total copper. I have weighed all the 1982's so far to remove the copper ones (3.11 grams). Hoping for more Wheaties in the remaining rolls. Happy Hunting .....JackMaster

All cents 1981 and earlier are copper. 1982s do need to be weighed to be sure. Really bugs me that I have seen many videos and articles that say all 1982 and earlier are all copper- not true.

I have been saving the copper pennies for at least 15 years. I just look for them in change. I don't go to the bank and buy rolls. I have around 3500 of them.
got all most 400 pounds,plus about 3 lbs. of indian heads,found about a lb. of those in an old house we demolished when i was a kid,some child i would imagin saved pennies by stuffing them behind the mop boards of this house,every room every wall...it was the coolest fun find ever!
Newbee here good video i biught a decent coin micriscope 6 minths ago looking fir doubleing and error coins only used it a few times but found alot if doubling in pennies and a 1042 s nickel pretty goid shape front was realy nice back was average have a good day thanks
I have 40 lbs of "trash" Cu pennies (ones that don't look AU condition or better). Locally, these days, I find coppers pose themselves at a rate of about 10-12%, and around 8 wheats/bx worth. I have a box from a bank in the Cherokee Nation I can't wait to get into, although I do have one local (Texas) box to peruse before that. Pretty good Cu % rate, not too shabby! Sounds like next time I'm up north, I should be picking up New England boxes.

I’ve hunted 33 boxes in my penny hunt and fill series with most of the boxes being from New York and I’ve averaged 16.5% coppers a box and 14 wheat Pennie’s. I hope those New England coins treat you well, you can also find some more Canadians as well!
Always good to hoard copper pennies! These days, banks don't like handing out coin, especially in large amounts so I'm glad I started sorting a decade or so ago. These days I just go through my change. If your bank is cool about it and aren't out of change all the time then I'd say go for it.
Definitely had a little more trouble getting coins this decade opposed to last, but generally, I’ve always had a good stockpile. Glad to hear you are continuing to hoard. Every penny counts!
@@captaincoincollector I decided to take a break last year or so when my own bank started making me wait while they ran a back ground check on me after politely requesting 10 rolls of penny. In all fairness I believe was from the shortage during & following the lock downs. They gave me rolls straight from the mint that time.
I got this box while at work mid hitch. Sometimes after working 14 hour shifts 7 days a week causes me to focus on other priorities. It’s hard to bring full boxes home because of flights so this box just sat in my closet on the ship for months, that is until I decided to focus on CRH this time again at work. Currently I have another 2 boxes from Jacksonville on the ship, which won’t be gone through for another 3 months when I return, but it is something to look forward to after my 75 day vacation!
No, the best time to start hoarding Copper pennies was back in 1981, but the second best time is right now. I've been keeping pennies since I was a kid, but I didn't start keeping them specifically for their Copper until I was in my mid to late 20s, which was 20 years ago. Granted, I don't search penny boxes at all, and I never have. I simply prefer to use cash, for a variety of reasons, and I always save my change. I keep all pre-'82 Copper pennies and all pre-2004 American nickels. I have 100+ pounds of Copper pennies...so probably 16,000 to 17,000+ pennies. I have about 75 to 80 pounds of nickels as well. Copper pennies are already in tradable form and will sell for above their face value already. As the dollar continues to devalue and things like Copper, Silver, and Gold continue to reflect that devaluation in their dollar denominated price rises, people will eventually locate the value they are looking for in commodities like the various monetary metals, which will include Copper and Nickel. Right now, they are being distracted with a variety of technological abstractions masquerading as money, but that will end eventually too.
I don’t know when I started, probably in the early 2000’s. I have roughly 25,500 copper Pennie’s now! I haven’t started collecting nickels yet, though I anticipate it to be soon.

I'd rather collect the Lincoln on log series and odd 2006 nickels uncircumcised 1$ or so ea ..did find a 17 walker in a roll looking for silver once for the 40% halves
I don’t just collect copper, I collect silver, gold, foreign, and clad coins alike. There is so much to collect, and so much to find in this hobby. That’s why I love it
Copper will become the poor mans silver. Save them while you can. I save some of the proof zink pennies aside as well. Add them to my children's little coins banks.
I like the idea of copper being the poor man’s precious metal. Though there is an abundance of copper in this world, it is heavily used. A reason why it is becoming more and more collectible

To all you folks who think hoarding copper pennies is a good idea i urge you to think this thorough to the day you may actually want to cash them in for thier copper value. If you think congress is ever going to let you bring these to a scrap yard , i very much doubt it. They will probably do exactly what canada did. If you think you're ever going to find a buyer, i doubt you could make any profit after the manual labor it takes to physically move these things and OMG heaven forbid the shipping cost. Ask yourself does this really make sense? 😊
This comment has some factual data. However, I am saving copper as not only an investment though, I coin roll hunt for the enjoyment of the hobby. Because I am already going through a box, I have the time to separate the coppers that I find. Will I make a profit from it? Who knows, time can only tell. If I can’t bring them to the scrap yard, I’m sure my grandson will spend them in 50 years as they will be passed along as relics of the past.
