you guys should do a bait caster vs spinning reel casting distance test. I think no RU-vidr has done it and it would be really helpful for those looking to carry 1 combo when fishing. thanks

unless its a specialty competitive distance casting baitcaster, 99% of the time, spinners will cast longer than baitcasters.. with the same casting weights

@@gabrielduarte3904 that may be true but every forum and youtube video regarding the 2 always say that baitcasters cast further. The only problem is that there hasnt been any video proof of that at all.

I’m able to get about the same amount of distance with either honestly. I do feel like with casting reels the rod plays a little bit more of a role. With the right rod i can cast a 1/16 oz jig head and plastic as far a spinning reel can. Spinning tends to be more forgiving and you can cast a broader range of lures well though. That being said I think people put too much stock into distance for me accuracy is more important which is why I prefer casting gear. But others will say they’re more accurate with a spinning rod. It’s all preference really

Thank You Thank You Thank you !!!! I've been saying this for years. But I will add #4 you don't need that much line to begin with. 125 to 150 yards is way more then enough for any inshore needs ( not counting certain situations i.e. tarpon fishing ) People think they need 20lb when In reality using 10lb is almost breaking at 20lb. Thus I use 5 , 8 and 10lb braid 99% of the time. Also this video shows that any angler will never max out on their drag so drag rating on reels really don't matter Also another tip if you wanna throw in another video. When you spool up your reel and it's time for a new spool. Just have a shop reverse your spool because the braid at the bottom of the spool is still new and fresh when you reverse it you now have brand new braid without spending more money. I go about 2 years give or take before having to strip down my spool for a completely new spool of line

yeah i reeled in a 10+ halibut in 6 pound mono ....dont need to go so heavy on the line, its not like your lifting the fish out the water , the water makes the fish lighter ... also drag a smooth nice drag is a must and your normal game fish is not going to run 100 yards pulling like even 6 pounds of drag unless you get a fish thats way to big for the set up, even 100 yards of line is more than enough at most cases .

@@thatonebeone 100% agree with you. You nailed it on the head. A smoother drag is more important then the amount of pounds the drag has. This past winter o got a 38" snook on 8lb braid and 20lb leader using my Shimano Exsense that drag is absolutely butter smooth

People dont understand abbrasian resistance. If people are fishing mangroves and docks or any structure at all your not going to need alot of line capacity thats why if you fish structure you need heavier braids like 20 or 30 lb test you only need lightweight braids if your not fishing near any structure and your trying to make far cast

@@JUAMN-kb8ux yeah I agree with that. Definitely situational preferences are a must too. Docks and mangroves I bump up to 15lb. But I bump my leader from 15 to 30 to at least 40lb of im using gd seaguar I'll run 50lb leader because it's the same size as 40 But that being said if I'm doing a little of everything including docks and mangroves I'll take my 10lb with 30lb leader. Because as a wader I hate carrying more then one rod 😂

Only use 8lb for 3000 size reels below. I've pulled countless big snook, reds, tarpon, and sheepshead out of docks and mangroves without even a fray. Also love using lighter line since you can throw super small baits for spookier fish.

Good video. I've been saying these EXACT things for years now. People are always using braid that is WAY too heavy. You do NOT need 65lb braid to fish for bass. Ever.

I used to use 12 lb mono for my inshore fishjng. When i first started using braid in the late 90s the tackle shop told me to stick with the same line diameter, so i used 50 lb test. Over the years i kept downsizing as i realized it sucked to snag a shipwreck with 50 lb test. For inshore salt species i either use 10 or 20 lb braid. The difference is whether or not i can let a fish run. Fish like tautog can not be given the chance to run into a wreck. Braided line isnt good with abrasion, so if you are going to experience abrasion, use a leader.

Nice theory....!!! After numerous casts on rocky ground, 10lbs braid is only 6lbs at best at the weakest point!!! And not everyone wants to cut off the last 40 feet on every new fishing trip. That's why I personally choose a slightly stronger line than necessary!!!

The reasons I use no lighter than 20lb braid are first, if I tie a bad knot, which happens sometimes, and second, if the braid gets around a rock or piling. In both situations I want that extra forgiveness of a stronger line. I don't need the 10' longer cast as much as I need the forgiveness.

I use 10lb main to 8-10lb fleurocarbon leader almost exclusively, seems to be a good all-around line class to me (for river fishing) here in Australia, occasionally I'll step up to 15lb main and leader if I'm targeting something a bit toothier or really strong fish like Mangrove Jack or Barrimundi, but that's about it, definitely go as light as you can, much more fun to catch fish on lighter gear 👌

You should do a test of pe rated lines, plenty of pe 1 braid available with breaking strain up to 20lb, pe 1.5 to 30lb and pe 2 to 35lb. Brands like power pro or Daiwa J braid are extremely thick for the breaking strain making it crap to cast.

I love the idea of using lighter line for fishing and it seems totally doable on spinning gear. I know that’s what we are using it on here but …. No, I was going to say how light line doesn’t hold up in certain circumstances but I won’t be a typical RU-vid commenter. While light line doesn’t hold up when fishing conventional reels in super fast currents with fast drifts where you’ve gotta muscle the fish up quickly and boat them fast. That negative comment doesn’t apply here or to most fishing. I look forward to getting better casts from using lighter like in new rigs I set up. On older setups I plan on setting up lighter line for the casting distance and leaving the heavier line as the backing. I know it will only be as strong as the lighter line but I’m only caring about the cast and some extra capacity then. Good video and introduction to. Bull Bay rods that I will check out.

Appreciate your understanding! I totally agree with you, a fast water, pull the fish in quick scenario is definitely not a light line situation. Your backing idea should work well as long as you have a smooth connection between the two lines for when a fish takes you into that heavier stuff. Let us know how it works out!

As I recall, the largest billfish tournament in the world, held annually in Puerto Rico has a maximum line test of 30 pound MONOFILAMENT. Braided lines not allowed.

As someone who used St Croix avoids and legends Xtremes for years and now uses nothing but bull bay rods. I definitely recommend trying them out. I have a few videos of the bull bay rods on my channel. My top 4 bull bay models 1. Tac X 2. Banshee 3. Bolt 4. Sniper And Shimano is king of all reels 🔥💪🏽

St Croix customer service is rude and trys to upsale you on everything , their warranty is a hassle to get moving , getting replacement rods takes months and so much more. Bull bay customer service is amazing , their warranty is so easy and simple , get warranty replacements within minutes ( walk in their shop with broken rod leave with new one ) again just a better over all experience

I cast heavy jigs into the sea from the shore and biggest impact Line has is my fishing is on the current and sinking rate. For example on PE2 I get around 40% faster sink rate than with PE4... This means that I can do more casts with thinner braid so more chance to catch the fish. Also fast currents have so much impact on heavy braids that its atcually not usable unless so go much heavier jigs. Other thing is when you fight tuna for example and have around 200 meters of line in the water, this makes thick line have immense pressure on your rod along with a fish. Much harder to fight. Those factors are very important to consider on saltwaters.

I use 30lb power pro and a 25lb floroxarbon leader I can cast just as far and I wouldn't have landed a massive 45 inch striper while smallie fishing if it was any lighter

Here in SE Alaska I use minimum of 50lb and 65 seems to last quite a bit longer.. Use a Diawa Ballistic 6000 (nice out of the box but doesn't really last that long).. From the bank.. Catching about 10-20 king salmon at 20to45lbs and Coho about 30-50 at 8-20lbs... I see tons of people break off the big fish because they plan for smaller fish.. Fools gold to to lighter.. Land more fish and eat more fish.. IN the case of king salmon. Bigger fish taste better and they break the mouth, good! Going to get a Diawa Certate as it should be a more durable reel..

Well said, myself I do fishing and is not a secret, more thiner line you use more likely you will succeed, but on the other hand you must be a another master class to handle a thin line.myself I pulled out with 18lb a salmon shi was 30lb.not easy to find a Fisherman ho can believe it.

I don’t want to chance losing a tournament winning bass. Nor do I like breaking off lures every time I snag up. My Tatula elites will cast a weightless trick worm a mile on 30lb power pro. I’ll step it down for mono/flouro(14-17lb), but for braid anything below 20lbs is pointless to me. Hell I could probably spool 50lb and still cast further than I need to

I haven’t yet watched the video but I keep asking people a question that want to use high pound test. The question is if you’re real only has 18 pound drag on it why do you need 30 to 50 pound test line and nobody has given me a good answer That I could understand.

It's all subjective, those light weight might be good for boat and open water, where you can allow the fish to run and get tired. Here in South Florida you can get a mangrove snapper, a permit running for cover or a 10 feet shark. We have a lot of structure and it can cut your line is a heartbeat, and lets not even talk about barracudas and parrot fish that has SAW for teeth hahaha... me personally 20-30lb for fresh water and 40-200lb for salt water with 50lb been my all around.

You were comparing braid rated strength vs actual breaking strength. For IGFA records, they go by the actual breaking strength of the line. For example, ande premium breaks higher than its rated but the ande tournament breaks at the true line rating. The line must break within 10% of the actual listed strength. I play a lot of ultra light fishing using 2&4 pound test but the igfa 2# is ridiculously light. It took me over 50 fish to finally break the world record pacific bonefish on 2# test and a lot of time, the line would break with just the drag of the water.

Exactly why i dont fish less than 40 lb braid. Where i fish is windy and the lighter lines get blown all over the place when lure fishing. Also size of reel determine size I use. 8000 reel is 50 lbs miminum. 6000 reel I am going 40 lbs max.

I don’t understand Americans, in Europe we measure our lines my the line diameter and then the kg/lbs strength in Us they use lbs test to but there is no indication of diameter which matter if you want to have line capacity. Also I do think there is a difference between Europe 50 lbs test and US 50lbs test

too many snags in my river for 10lb line and some of the weeds underwater can break 20 pound line so I rather not use that as am going to lose too much money XD

I heard a story of a dude on a long range boat, making bait in the middle of the night. He's jigging up sardines on a sabiki rig with 8 lb main line, when his reel starts screaming. After a four hour fight, he brings up a 150lb blue fin. I thought it was just urban legend, but I'm not sure so sure anymore. 🤣

The difference between 10 and 15lb diameter is such a negligible amount it really doesn't matter.

All are subject to where you're fishing. If I am fishing alone from a boat, open water, and no snags, I'd use the lightest line I can get away with. Of course, all considering reel/rod drag rating and lure weight / bait setup. There's no exact science in fishing. All are subject to the conditions where you're fishing and the kind of fish you're targeting.
