I've discussed before the most common causes of stress in cats and how common it is for our pet cats to be under some degree of stress no matter how calm and relaxed they appear. One of the biggest causes of stress in cats is having strange cats coming into their house, eating their food and using their litter tray.

Would this stop my second cat getting through? He is v smart and when a normal flap is set one way he just gets a claw in and pulls it forward. Sometimes he whacks it enough to catch it on the reverse bounce. He is very food motivated. The reason I want one of these is so the other cat can eat at his own pace in the pantry.

I guess it depends how persistent and strong he is, but it is more secure than a standard flap in my experience

The sureflap microchip catflat is really noisy in operation. My cat was happy using the old cat flap but is really scared of the load thunk of the sureflap when it unlocks. Sureflap really out to address this.

My cat is now angry we're not letting his stray friends in, so he's spending more time outside! On a serious note, we took the black light torch and the walls were full of cat urine from stray cats. I've given the walls a another coat of paint which was easier than scrubbing them.

A friend has a cat flap that works fine, but just one local cat has found a way of opening it by putting his claw around the door from outside. Any ideas about some means of stopping this.

Lately I have had other cats coming into my house or through my cats catflap?. I have lately had a black cat chasing her. And last night me and my family were having dinner and we didn't realise our cat being chasing by the black cat and came in. Then this morning the black cat was roaming our house upstairs we thought it was our cat. My husband woke up and saw it was the black cat.

sorry to hear that, my sureflap is still going strong although looking discolored and the screw covers have snapped as I've moved house a couple of times

How does it work with the setting of the microship? My cat is already microshipped so do you just program the number to it? Thanks.

You press and hold the button until it opens and the light starts flashing and it will then record your cat's microchip number when they go through it for the first time

What is the cost of having your cat microchipped? Both my girlfriend and I are out of work during the pandemic with 3 kids (1 in college) and have 4 cats. Our funds are pretty limited until we can go back to work. 2 of our cats are finally being spayed on the 15th at $300 each which is already a strain on our finances. We're hoping them being chipped isn't too expensive, any suggestions or insight on average costs of microchipping?

It varies depending on where you are. Give your vet clinic a call. Your nearest shelter may also offer the service?

My cat, Ozzy, has a Surepet pet door. He does use it, but seems reluctant to go outside. I think this may be because it's fitted through a wall and has a tunnel, so he can't be sure he won't be ambushed. If I'm right, what cab I do to make the situation better for him?

Is he keen to go out when a door is opened for him? Could you put some kind of mirror up outside so he can see the coast is clear or change the location of his door? It's not an issue I can remember coming across before unfortunately

@@OurPetsHealth unfortunately, there is nowhere else suitable to install the flap. He is more than happy to go through the nearby door. I wondered about fixing a wire or timber cage to the outside with another microchip flap so he can get outside safely and check things out before committing himself, and the extra flap would keep it safe for him. It would be an expensive experiment though.

It certainly could work, and if you do do this only the very outside one would need to be a microchip flap. Still not an easy fix though. Good luck

I don't believe in controlling our cats routines. Our cats go out when they want to. If there is something outside that frightens them, they come in. Plus you don't need a cat flap to monitor a cat. Having them microchipped is great for ID and entering and leaving the house at will. Thank you.

The same can be said for humans but this is the way that we have been conditioned/socialised and its the same with domesticated animals. I would be worried about letting them out whenever they wanted because it would be awful for me to be woken up at 4am only to realise that they have brought me a "gift" (which is what happened before with my previous cat) or if my cat flap had malfunctioned and they were stuck outdoors overnight. Its our responsibility to ensure their safety in the best way we can and that means controlling when they go out. Its the same with feeding them. We dont buy a big bag of food and leave it out on the floor just to let them eat when they want do we? So unless this is something that you do, you cant really say that you "dont believe in controlling a cats routine".
