Why You Should Get A TPX Radar Detector Installed On Your Motorbike

This video demonstrates why you should get a TPX Radar Detector installed on your motorbike with an activation filmed in real time during a recent ride on one of Auckland's motorways.
In New Zealand, at the time of filming, radar detection devices are legally permitted on vehicles however radar jamming devices are forbidden.
I should also make clear I am not affiliated with Adaptiv Technologies nor the TPX Radar resellers here in New Zealand in any way. I bought and installed my unit with my own money after seeing it in use by several of my riding buddies and specifically after suffering from the attention of an over zealous revenue confiscation agent at a time I happened to be just slightly above a criminally low speed limit on an empty country road.

I am telling you, Uniden R3 on my new Goldwing and its priceless. I got it refurbished from Uniden and so worth it. Not even one issue and this thing is a killer. Laser and anything you shoot to it.

Do you provide it with water proof case? Did you also use a bluetooth connection or just rely on visuals?

@@kiwipower9036 I don't have a waterproof case. if it rains, it goes into the center pocket. Also, no Bluetooth on this one. I use aftermarket 4 bright LED block velcro on top of the detector and plugged to the earphone plug. Works perfect.

A couple of questions: 1. Can the TPX pick up mobile speed cameras? i.e covert cameras. 2. Can the police detect that you have a detector?
@HughBeRiding
@HughBeRiding 2 года назад
Mobile speed cameras use the K band which I filter out anyway (I run with the HighwayNoK setting) because K-band is used by many other devices like electric doors and cars with radar based cruise control systems. Also the fact sheet with the unit states “camera vans are very difficult to detect. Most detectors give no more than 50m warnings while good units may give up to 150m range.” So given that, and all the other noise with K band it’s unlikely to provide benefit there. Infringement notices for speed camera though have no demerits, only a fine and it’s demerits I want to avoid. To the second question I don’t know whether it can be detected whether you are running a TPX but a look at any bike with one will show it in plain sight and they’re legal anyway so doesn’t really make any difference. Ride safe 😎🤘

There are many many many better detectors then the TPX units, I run a Uniden R4, the range it offers is one of the best for KA band, and it can see the lower frequency K band Redflex cameras we have here in NZ.
@HughBeRiding
@HughBeRiding 2 года назад
For sure TPX aren't the only game in town but they are the only one I have experience with and it hasn't let me down yet. Glad you're enjoying and getting value from your Uniden R4. One thing I should say is TPX also picks up K band just like your Uniden, I just choose to filter out K band so the unit isn't going off all the time since K band can be triggered by anything from electric doors to cars with radar based cruise control systems. Cheers 😎

The tpx is the only weather proof detector though.
@A_Talented_Maori
@A_Talented_Maori 2 года назад
@@themexicanization This is true, and it has motorcycle specific accessories, but for me the range isn't great enough, and a simple plastic snap lock container will make any detector waterproof enough for motorcycle use. But each to their own, I use an R4 because I did my own research and preferred range over accessories.

@@HughBeRiding The TPX can't see all of the K-Band though, lowest is 24.050, some cameras use a lower frequency then that. I have an upload showing 24.024, the TPX would've missed that.

@HughBeRiding 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it. I run my TPX on HighwayNoK at all times which cuts out the K band noise that otherwise has your alert sensor going off all the time. With having the "NoK" setting you will no longer pick up electric doors or cars with radar based cruise control systems however you should also note it will not pick up speed camera vans either but those are apparently very difficult for most systems to detect until very closeup anyway. 🤘
@russellholmes1590
@russellholmes1590 Год назад
Just brought one of these. Interested in what setting you generally have this on? Seems its only really useful for Ka band which they use in the patrol cars? K band picks up all sort of crap and the GPS is completely unreliable with readings for cameras that don't even exist and not accurate for the ones that do.
@HughBeRiding
@HughBeRiding Год назад
I have mine set to HighwayNoK which is recommended for NZ. I tried with it being set to receive and notify for all K-band alerts which is used by many car GPS systems and the alerts were overwhelming and it was impossible to determine which was a problem or not especially when on a motorway. With the setting on HighwayNoK I find the system works very well and tells me everything I need to know. K Band infringements, if you are unlucky enough to get one, are generally from speed cameras (fixed or mobile) where the pain is delivered by a fine whereas the Ka band is a fine AND demerits and that's the thing I want to know and mitigate. That's been my experience anyway.

@@HughBeRiding Thanks Hugh. Do you bother using the GPS for fixed speed cameras. I tried finding out how to update the database and even emailed Adaptiv but have had no response. The database number on my unit is 1804 which I reckon stands for April 2018 which is way out of date.

Do you ever get condensation build up in your TPX?
@HughBeRiding
@HughBeRiding Год назад
Nope, not as yet anyway. It's been on the bike for a couple of years, bike is garaged when I'm at home or else the unit removed from the bike when I'm touring. Ride in all kinds of conditions and never had a condensation issue.

@@HughBeRiding Thanks for the reply. I got a new unit a couple of months back and have never ridden in rain, some very light drizzle but not enough to even get the unit wet. Like you my bike is housed in my garage with the unit but I got condensation build up the other day. It was fairly humid and had rained earlier in the day. I took the unit in and they weren’t in a hurry to do anything about it. Told me I should be taking the unit off the bike when not riding and keep in a warm dry area. Think if it happens again I will ask for a replacement unit.

Yup, sounds like you should do that. The condensation issue is not part of my TPX experience.

will it work in the UK
@HughBeRiding

Yes it will work wherever there are radar frequencies in service. You should check whether it is legally allowed to use vehicular radar detectors in the country where you plan to use it. The use of radar detectors in/on your vehicle is legal in New Zealand.

Hey mate does it pick up regular planted speed cameras?
@HughBeRiding
@HughBeRiding 2 года назад
Hi, yes it does pick up fixed speed camera sites. These are activated by GPS location which can be updated regularly online. When you approach a fixed speed camera site you get a single chirp tone and your digital display unit shows an SC code and counts down the distance remaining until you are on the camera. They usually seem to trigger from about 200m distant.
