You should have a bait tank for many reasons. They save time for important things like watching the Cubs play, thinking about why chairs are called chairs, and of course fishing! Here's how I made mine!

We have a small outside pond that we built a very similar filter system for. Obviously I hadn’t seen your video yet but I got my ideas from SC Fish Keeping. Actually did start it off with the plan of it being a bait tank but without being able to keep it indoors temperature regulation, more so here in NC, keeping the water cool enough for shiners, was almost impossible. So it became a goldfish pond. lol

Great idea for ur bait tank. I use a 55 gal. Plastic barrel cut in half. In my garage it gets so hot! I can't keep my blue gills alive much more than a couple of days. I even use an additive in my water.

So just an FYI, based off my research of filters. Activated carbon adsorbs a number of dissolved contaminants such as chloramine and chlorine, tannins (which color the water), and phenols (which cause odors). It will help keep aquarium water from turning yellow over time. It is important to understand that there are several important toxins that activated carbon does not remove. Most notably, it does not remove ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate. Therefore, it does not aid in toxin removal during the initial aquarium setup. Water changes or other methods must be used to address elevated ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels.

Yeah I slapped a bait tank together last summer and didn’t filter it. Just aerated it. Didn’t work out, unless you’re into killin perfectly good flathead bait. So if I’m gonna keep Let’s say a couple dozen chubs/gills alive for whatever length of time, how often would I need to change out the filtration media? Go Cubs Go!
@RiverCertified
@RiverCertified 6 лет назад
Vonklink6741 I never change the media. I scoop a bucket of water out of the tank and rinse out the media in the bucket. Don't hide it off cuz that'll kill your beneficial bacteria. Go Cubs!

Is it worth it really though? How much in electricity does that pump use? Probably spending just as much on electricity as you do on bait.
@RiverCertified

I've thought about that, but at a buck a bait and going through approximately 3000 baits a year, it's the best decision for me. I guess you just have to evaluate your position.
@Lm701
@Lm701 5 лет назад
@@RiverCertified Yeah it definitely depends on how often you fish and how much bait you use. Sounds like a great use of electricity for you. Plus if you catch your own bait like I've seen in a few of your videos they're natural and worth much more and good to keep alive.

Do you think a bilge pump would work the same way as your pond pump, and be more durable, without having to go through a charcoal box? Or is the charcoal for ammonia removal a necessity with bait fish? Thanks, great video
@RiverCertified
@RiverCertified 6 лет назад
The pond pump is basically a bilge pump that you plug into an outlet. The filter isn't completely necessary, but the charcoal and beneficial bacteria remove ammonia and the gravel and scotch bright pads remove dirt and gunk. Not necessary, but you will have to change the water more often.
