Why you should NOT become a SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST! 

I was scared to watch this video because I didn't want to become discouraged about my prospective career path in school psychology. But I was thrilled when the first two reasons you shared were that you need to love kids and you need do a lot of writing/paper work because I definitely love both of those! Score! I have to be honest, I was a little intimidated when you started talking about how much interaction you have to have with people because I am a very introverted person. I'm trying to not let that scare me too much, because I think the work I'd be doing in this field is well worth pushing myself out of my introverted comfort zone. Thanks for the video!

As a school psych of 9 years I agree with all your points! The only thing I’d like to add is that you have to be okay with being alone because a lot of your time will be spent writing, and you don’t get as much interaction as those in other areas of education. You also have to be very self suffient and able to work with very little supervision.

Actually working with children is like 20% of our day... mostly it’s paperwork

I’m interested in School Psychology, but I need to practice my social skills more (the shyness mainly comes from my own insecurities) and learn how to speak with kids. I’m not around children too much. My little cousins are growing pretty fast, there’s barely any kids in my family and no children in my group of friends so I gotta pay more attention to those 2 things. - Get my better at socializing - Learn how to/speak more with kids (somehow)

Nice video Tiffany, thank you! I commented on one of your videos a few months ago when I was applying for programs... and I got accepted with a partial scholarship. I am very excited! :) Your videos were helpful in solidifying my decision, I spent 5 years after my undergrad before I decided on school psych. I'm sure it will have its challenges like any other job, but knowing the pros and cons is good since it made me realize it would be a good job for me. Cheers :)

Becoming a school psychologist is actually the field that I am working towards obtaining myself so, by watching your video, i'm even more excited and determined towards becoming a school psychologist! I''m actually currently taking Psych 41 (From Infancy to Old Age) right now which I'm loving and after this last class, ill be transferring over to a 4 year college to obtain my bachelors degree. I am currently applying to grad programs and this video really helped me. According to the professors at my dream school, the main thing they look for in applicants is their knowledge about school psychologists. They want to pick applicants that actually know what the specifics of the job are. They're not necessarily looking for "I want to help kids." They want to hear, "I'm going to be doing a lot of report writing", or "I'm going to be interacting with parents and teachers." Your videos really help me understand what a school psychologist does. There's still a lot of reports at the high school level, especially with triennials. Depending on the school site, sometimes you too get initials. I just graduated this week! Good luck with grad school, it gets tough but totally worth it!

Hi Tiffany! :) I watch all your videos! I love them, they are so informative. I aspire to be a school psychologist/licensed specialist in school psychology within elementary schools. I am currently a rising senior in college, and I attend college within the Hampton Roads area, am not far away from Fairfax. I plan to apply to George Mason as well! I have acquired an internship this summer as a counselor for rising high school seniors and incoming college freshmen. I have research and it was a challenge coming across a school psychologist/licensed specialist in school psychology within the Hampton Roads that I can shadow or acquire an internship with. I was wondering if you have any idea on how I can expand my research ( websitest to look at, schools districts to look up, colleagues, friends, etc) to actually work with someone in the field instead of shadowing/interning with a counselor. I have been interning as a counselor & shadowing a counselor because it was the closest occupation to school psych I came across. Thank you in advance!

I have a big question for you, I wasn't that great in Stats in my undergrad. Do they brush up on stats in your masters? How heavy will I need to know stats?

I didn’t know you were still in graduate school. But the job has really changed over the years! I have been doing it 26 years now, and there is much more report writing then ever before. I work in Los Angeles, and the lawyers have completely changed our job, for the worse. When I started in 1994, our reports were 2 to 3 pages, now they are 35 to 40 or more. So, if you want to be a school psychologist, go far away from where lawyers congregate.

Hi, I am a sophomore in college located in CA and I don't know what I want to do with my life, then I came across school psychologist and got really interested. I love kids, writing, and working with people. But I heard that this job requires more report wiritng than interacting with people. Is that true? It concerned me a bit because I am more extroverted than I am introverted so working mostly with people and the rest writing would've been perfect :(( If it is true how do you deal with burnout because I personally can't sit for hours only writing. also, I don't work well if I am not held accountable with a schedule or goal or time and since a school psychologist doesn't get micromanaged how do you hold yourself accountable? Because I struggle without deadlines and such. And THANK YOU for this video helps me research.

I can think of a couple more reasons... :)

Well I think you need to be more specific. Going on 10 years. So school psychologist role differs slightly in every district. There’s a misconception that you do therapy as a school psychologist, you don’t. You spent most of your time testing and writing reports. But what I mean testing is each kid you test takes an average of 6 hours to test, plus the scoring , then the report which is between on average 13-25 pages depending on how many disability categories you are looking into and how complicated is the case. It can be tiring. You also can do other type of evaluations called FBA’s which is another 10 plus page report. If there is a kid with suicidal ideation guess who they will call to see if they are and need to be hospitalized. I don’t mind these things but it’s not for everyone. Many of my classmates started working as school psychologist and they ended up changing into fields because it wasn’t for them. Another thing is that when a student has behavior problems some teachers and administrators have this expectation that you can fix it and they will send or call you when the kid is acting up. There is also cases where parents may be difficult and not agree with your results or the services the school is providing so they can bring in advocates and depending how well off the parent is, they can bring in lawyers during the IEP meeting. This is not all the time, but there are times when teacher and or become upset when a child doesn’t qualify. There are good things in the field but this video is about the challenging aspects of the job. Forgot to mention that unless you have a good SST system at your sites( yes you typically get assigned to more than one school!) you will be testing a lot of kids because the referrals will come from teachers and parents.

I am undecided, do I want to try school psychology or clinical mental health? It seems school psychology seems more interactive and you’re around a younger population, which seems more energetic and interesting at times… maybe less of a heavy mood?

Yeah I hated my elementary school one k-3rd grade lady might be nice but apparently she was with me in kindergarten for so testing learning troubles at the time, but I cried when I got home from the “scary lady” lol I did that to a lot of people and then when I has to see her agin in 3rd grade she said remember me? I said “yes, I hated you and I still hate you. I would olny call her scary lady. I was such a noob lol

And I heard if school psychologist writes something wrong , even smallest thing , parents can sue them 🙉
