My girlfriend was always scared to try fighting games because he first experience was getting zoned to death on MK11 by a Joker while she was playing Kotal Khan Testament came out in strive recently and she absolutely loves their character design and aesthetic, making her install the game to give it a try She hasn’t played it online yet but she messes around in training mode and asks me questions and that stuff makes me happy because it’s nice seeing someone enjoy the same things you do

You definetely need to take a step back at some point in your fighting game journey. Understanding that a loss is just a loss and not getting discouraged by it, wanting to always improve yourself and understand what you're playing

It’s crazy to me how many and how often these videos have to be made. People just don’t even give fighting games a chance it’s sad.
@carlos41519
@carlos41519 2 года назад
Its not as crazy when you realize that the majority prefer games that you can hop in and play in. Those games that take no training are the ones that are really popular, even in this community (games such as dbz or gg). These types of games have simple yet progressive learning curves and have a major advantage over games with a slightly more steeper learning curve. Edit: when i said “Those games that take no training…” i meant to add that they take no training to pick up and play

@carlos41519
@carlos41519 2 года назад
@@pcharl01 not exactly. Im saying that strive takes no training to hop in, play with someone, and have fun. I know how complex it is but its mechanics allow for fast pace fun at a low level. This is the thing that pushes them to learn a new move via special input, and due to them not being as complex they will continue to explore the game and get better. In older games, life-bars were pretty large if you didnt optimize or have combos. There was a lack of motion input buffering for players that struggled with motion inputs. Windows for moves were tighter and spacing specific in some cases in previous guilty gear. Strive, after the constant trial and errors of other fighting games, introduced mechanics to make the game easier on a base level.

Are you playing on stick or pad? He’s a lot harder on pad if you don’t have HS on a trigger to make negative edge gunshot easier. That enables gunshot into steady aim shot to combo or be a true block string.

Beautiful video! Can’t agree more with your point on fighting games being a universal language and showing you that it is still possible to improve no matter how bad things may seem. I first really got into fighting games when i was in a really dark place in my life but thanks to them i gained a lot of motivation, perspective and a lot of friends from locals that were just around the corner where i was hanging out. DBFZ has been my first deep dive into the FGC as a whole, and I remember having a mixture of satisfying highs and depressingly bad lows on that game. There were plenty of times where I wanted to quit it for a multitude of reasons, but my friends gave me even better reasons to get back up and “enjoy” the game instead of “getting good”. It took me 3 and a half years to take that lesson to heart, and I’m genuinely happy that this video reminded me of that fact. Seriously, this means a lot. Thank you! ✌🏽

I think I've shared this type of videos more times than I can count, and in spite of these videos just sparking the flames of motivation in me, they are but a fart in the wind for most of my friends. None of them give even this type of videos a chance, they may play them on the background, not really listening and then be like "yeah but I don't like losing" or the too common "I'd rather grind in X game" (were player progression can be measured by the numbers on their gear) and I just die a little bit inside. The funny thing is most if not all of them really like dark souls, so "failure" is not a thing they have a big issue with, imo it's competing and potentially losing to another human that keeps them from getting into the genre.

I have seen alot of videos tackling this topic but something I liked a lot that you talked about is when you "broke" that barrier and started to view the games differently. Like what happened to you in melty where you started to see openings, when to punish/go in, etc. I know I had the same moment with dbfz and like you said in the video, it just does something too you. You start to see the games differently and I think it is at that point that a person really gets hooked into fighting games. Overall great vid and can't wait to see more.

Great video!! :) I really liked what you talked about, I think giving examples of proplayers, casual players and even your own experience helped a lot with understanding the points you were making. This is a very cool and encouraging video, thank you for your work and expressing your love for the genre!! I particularly loved whenever you talked about the fact that anyone could get into it and get better if they try their best, that the games allow us to express ourselves and become better players, or even better persons sometimes :)

I saw so many videos like this and I think all of them bring something interesting to the table. Yours was specially pocket and concise but never the less, really true. Honestly, as someone who’s starting to rank up years since the launch of Smash Ultimate and also ever expanding my list of tastes, I really appreciate the video. I recently been feeling more frustrated than usual, something I had to deal my whole career of FGs but was starting to learn how to deal with it; because my IRL problems started bleeding out into my performance. Your video helped get me more in balance with myself and to keep moving forward. Thank you!

great video, thank you. i think i'm in same boat of having been playing fighting games for a year too, starting with tekken last year when it was on sale and now playing that alongside guilty gear strive and very little bit of sf5, with looking out for sales on melty blood, kof15, and even waiting for dnfduel etc. though it feels like right now tekken and guilty gear will be my main ones to be playing around with. starting out tekken definitely was frustrating with rage inducing losses and then googling and thinking to myself on what i was supposed to do, improving on that, picking up my mistakes, and improving. it's definitely very rewarding when what you have lost to before, you can respond to and win next time.

I got this mindset: "the only players that don't get good at fighting games are the ones that stop playing." The rank system in fighting games can be a double edged sword. Losing over and over can discourage some people from playing, and watching your rank not move up can add to the disappointment, and even worse when you get ranked down. But when you play ranks, you're playing the long game, you just gotta keep trying and learning, the rank up will come later.

I just started playing Guilty Gear Strive. I'm really bad at it. I don't even know what all the buttons do yet, and I'm not used to my layout because I don't play fighting games, but, as someone who lives in South America, I 100% agree that this is the best time ever to start playing fighting games online, thanks to rollback. In case you didn't know: if a fighting game has a small active community, it is almost always dead in SA. Sure, some people will see "180 ping" and reject a match, because they ignore that it basically feels like playing locally, or they straight up think that your connection is bad, but when someone wants to fight with you, it does it fact feel like playing againts someone who is in SA. I'm getting destroyed each time I try to battle againts someone who actually knows who to play the game, but at least I can finally start training with a goal in mind. I'm having a blast, and I don't think I had this much fun learning how to play a game since CS:GO (now CS 2) came out. Thanks for the video, and lets hope that the fighting community can keep growing from now on.

The language analogy is so true. I feel like I'm having a conversation with my opponent when I fight them. They can disrespect me through things like t-bags or multiple DP's which I can rebut by either t-bagging back or just taking the "humble" approach. I honestly feel like I've had more in depth conversations with people in a fighting game than I have in some real life scenarios, especially since you can't really be fake.

The FGC is such a welcoming place and so many don't realize it due to online play and use videos like that Justin Wong "You Gonna Learn Today" as examples. They obviously didn't watch the full clip and realize Justin had no mic and couldn't talk to the kid. Everything is always taken out of context. If you're on the fence about going to an in-person FGC event, do it. I promise you'll be hooked. Everyone is always trying to win so that first round might be rough. Once you're revealed to be a noob, I guarantee the person you're playing will switch gears and jump into teacher mode. Show you the basics, go through some BnB's for your character, teach you some terminology, etc. We want everyone to get better. Literally everyone in the FGC is Goku. We know we can only improve by fighting stronger opponents and if none exist, we'll give you a damn senzu bean to create our own worst enemy 😂😂

3:37 In the case of Dragon Ball FighterZ, the auto combos in that game work in its favor, because some characters have auto combos that contain moves you can't perform otherwise. @hefdef9961
@hefdef9961 2 года назад
not to get weird or elitist but i feel like the whole "learning" part is what separates smash players from the fgc so often. Not that smash isn't a game where you have to learn or that smash players don't like learning, it is just due to the series' success that you get people who aren't playing it for that reason who lump themselves in with the people who do play more "seriously" if you'd want to call it that who kind of muddy the water. It is like Overwatch in a way where everyone swears they take it seriously but don't actually dedicate themselves to it, not that there is anything with just picking up and playing any game. This could be me seeing patterns where there aren't though, the concept of casual-competitive games has had a stranglehold on my head for like years now
@MaoMavo
@MaoMavo 2 года назад
I guess that's because fighting games are always srs 1v1s while in smash or ow you can just play around, do 2v2s or 2v1s in a non competitive environment and have more neutral situations with a lower skill floor. also more players on or below your skill level while fgs become tryhard a while after release.

I haven't still found the game that completely clicks with me and I've tried a lot of stuff (Tekken, Soul Calibur, MK, Strive, UNI, MBTL are a few examples). Maybe it's my mindset that doesn't work with the genre. I can't put myself every single day to play a FG in order to understand something. Still to this day I still don't understand why I managed to do a thing, I miss a lot of motions and don't understand some of the mechanics of the games (Guilty Gear being the main example of game I really don't understand what I'm doing). The only time I managed to put a lot of hours in online stuff was with the Crash Team Racing remake but even then a lot of days I was dragging myself to play one hour to get points to unlock stuff more than actually having fun with the game and whenever I had the chance I switched to a different genre like a platformer/JRPG/metroidvania. As far as fighting games themsevles, the few that I liked a bit more (outside of single player content) were UNI and MBTL for me finding a character in both games that felt interesting for me to play. Even then I still lacked the effort to continue playing them due to me being a constant punching bag for 90% of the matches I did.

I wish I could properly get into a fighting game because I love watching the genre but every single game I've tried picking up, I just plateau very quickly and hit a wall in skill I can never overcome so I get curb stomped and that's not fun for me so I just don't care to play them anymore, I'd rather play through a new game I can actually have fun with.
