Honestly, though, I'm not sure who I "pity" the most... Lan with Nynaeve? Perrin with Faile? Or Rand, with Elayne, Aviendha, AND Min?! Come to think of it, that's one of the good points of the WoT series... it's chock full of incredibly strong women... and I don't seem to recall a SINGLE "Mary Sue" among them.
@mortuitissedai2085
@mortuitissedai2085 3 года назад
@@Nyet-Zdyes Same lol, the fact that every single character had faults, made mistakes and lost fights was really refreshing after reading and watching some more modern stories. I especially like how nynaeve's brash and often arrogant character never really went away, even as the character evolved and matured-allowing a protagonist's weakness to continue. I think those kind of things were one of the main reasons why-after books 3-5, you could get really invested in the other characters, who had previously been more secondary to Rand. Wheel of time was ahead of it's time imo, with strong women and men as well as weak ones, likeable characters ranging from irresponsible and jokey, to disciplined and ruthless. Wheel of time isn't my favourite story, but it's definitely the one i consider most well written (that I've read) and it's still right up there with my faves anyways.

The Wheel of Time spends so much time fleshing out the entire cast that the main character is only in the third book for a couple of chapters. But he's still the main character of that book, because despite him not being there, the plot still revolves around him. It's incredible.

@@joecourtney8552 no, on the contrary it lets you experience other characters more deeply. It takes from LOR in that it starts with a group or party that eventually breaks up with each character having their own part to play in grand scheme of things. So each chapter usually covers a particular character. Yes some of the books will ignore a particular character except for a single chapter maybe at end.
@Kamishi845
@Kamishi845 5 лет назад
@@chadwhitfield6946 It depends on what you enjoy reading about, I think. In many ways the main character in WoT is more a concept than a character, and as such does not have to be present in order to drive a plot forward; however, it also makes the character itself feel more distant and less present as his characterization matters less over the concept he comes to represent. At least I found that to be true over time. Personally I could never finish WoT which was probably a combination of many things, with one of them being that I simply got burnt out reading fantasy at the time, but also that the large scale of WoT, over say, a more smaller-scale and personal story, made me lose interest. It does share a lot of similarities with A Song of Ice and Fire in that regard insofar that it's a very politically driven story with a humongous cast and that could be raised as a criticism against it, since it will be impossible to care for every character, and that sometimes less relevant characters end up stealing time from the main story that just doesn't have to be there. Even more so with Jordan, due to his detailed writing style. I began to really lose interest in WoT around the books where Rand took more and more of a backseat in favor of the political intrigue which occurred around him, and I never got around reading Winter's Heart and the final book as a result. To me, which I found the most interesting in the end was the psychological tension within Rand's mind, and when that was removed from being a major plot detail, I thus lost interest, as huge political conflicts just don't interest me a lot. Not too surprisingly I'm more interested in stories that dip into cosmic horror and psychological tension such as psychological thrillers than I am high fantasy as a result. And while Harry Potter too has a humongous cast, Rowling never went into the political conflict much of her world, which made it feel much more personal and real, and I think therein just lies the difference. It's the same reason I lost interest in GoT really quickly as no character spoke to me and the overall conflicts presented in the story also never appealed, either.
@chadwhitfield6946
@chadwhitfield6946 5 лет назад
@@Kamishi845 I think it helped me reading WoT in that I read the books as they came out. Because of that I had to wait a year or 2 to read the next book. I could def see how starting it now and being so much story could burn anyone out. Plus Jordan does repeat himself alot. It got to point I would skip whole paragraphs because I didn't need to read how some woman reacted when a handsome man walked in by straightening her shirt or hair instinctively. But you should def someday finish it. Sanderson def picks the pace up when taking over.

What I really noticed about the descriptions RJ uses is that they vary depending on which character we are having a POV from. Matt will notice wealth and how expensive things are, Rand tends to pay a lot of attention to swords and food being a farmer, Perrin often pays attention to how things are built like buildings or tools or how practical their clothing might be. Nyneave hilariously is the one we get so much dress detail from, the women who swears up and down she isn't obsessed with beautiful clothes but not so secretly is. It really adds to the characters unique voices.

I realized this when I saw the 50th misandrist rant in the book and realized they were all when Nynaeve was narrating. That both made me realize this cool feature of Jordan's writing, AND that the, lets be honest, horrible gender politics are purely because the characters are mostly medeival peasents that are manipulated by a cabal of women.

Something forgotten: NO MARY SUES! EACH AND EVERY character grows organically in their strength and ability and off their own merits. No one gets it easy! ALL have to struggle and fight for their roles, positions, and power (both internal and external/political)! And everyone acts within their character to get them where they end up. It's a messy journey for all! With deep personal struggles as they change and grow during the evolution of themselves and the tale... STRONG FEMALSS: Incredibly well written and diverse female (and make) pro/antagonists! Magical elements that aren't magic weilders: part of the incredible world building is its use of multiple magical(ish) creatures and happenings... Loyal, the steddings, eye of the world, etc. And lastly: it's COMPLETELY UNIQUE idea of how the world is formed and how it works - ie ”the wheel weaves as the wheel wills” how the pattern of events and life is a tapestry of human, emotional, physical, and action oriented yarn! While heavily influenced by destiny, there is still the option for free will, the dark ones touch, balefire and the elements of taverin (sp?) to further shape events which ALL have realistic consequences. Even the idea of reincarnation in how it is presented makes logical sense (which can be true for the real world too...)

Freddy Martinez for sure! It's a much more honest portrayal of what ”adventure” and ”glory” really is... And how much self sacrifice it truly takes to be a hero or legendary! I very much enjoyed this honest analysis and, although I have not previously read any of Robert Jordan's books, I might now. Recently I have been thinking a great deal about the use of detailed descriptive passages in my own work. I generally use minimal description of objects/places/physical appearance, preferring to allow the reader's own imagination to do the work for me. My feeling is that, if allowed to visualize for themselves, readers will develop mental images that are more real/tangible. This also provides more room for me to focuss on plot, world-building and character development. I realise this makes me something of an outlier (in the fantasy genre at least).

While I think WoT is great, my problem with it is the sheer number of unlikeable main(ish) characters. I often find myself more entertained by reading chapters of characters that might have 1 pov in a book and then drag through several hundred pages of characters I just don't care about or straight up dislike. It makes it difficult to be in their heads.
@LucasVogelmann

I have the same problem with it. It always seemed to me as a series with huge potential, but that falls short because of its main characters. Specially Mat and Perrin never captivated me. I’m currently at The Shadow Rising, but it’s been a struggle reading it. I always felt like a lot of characters are kinda shallow as far as their motivations, desires and fears go.

I'm pretty much all in on Sanderson. For me, the Mistborn series (since I feel like calling the Cosmere as a whole a series feels a bit like cheating) is something special, and we've yet to even really see the full scope of it. The thing that makes it stand out to me - beyond the amazing magic system that is arguably Sanderson's best, and no one else I've read matches Sanderson's hard magic systems, and beyond the deeply likeable characters engaging plots and exceptional action sequences - is the temporal element. Each Era is giving us a new view of the same world, with vast technological advancement along with how the magic system fits into that, and how the magic users can use the technology to enhance their powers - or how technology can be used to counter those powers. As much as I'm really looking forwards to the fourth and final Wax and Wayne book, as well as the Era 3 trilogy, the thing that's really got me salivating (and since it'll likely take over a decade to get there, I'll be waiting a while) is how Sanderson will give us Mistborn Scifi in Era 4. I just love the idea of someone as focused on hard magic as Sanderson integrating that magic with all the technological trappings of scifi.

That's a tough one for me. Obviously, WoT is amazing. So is the Dark Tower series, though in different ways. I loved the Dragonlance series when I was younger; read pretty much every book up to the stories of the original heroes' children (the Majere brothers trilogy is frankly amazing). I'm awful with names, so I'm forgetting the titles of several fun series I've read over the years. Oh, the Vampire Chronicles (is that what they're called these days?) by Anne Rice; they're not all perfect, but they added so much to the vampire mythos. Anyhoo, brain's done cooperating. Carry on.

Never thought of it but my first intro in fantasy was Patricia McKillip's RiddleMaster of Hed Trilogy. She had a young price of fisherman, who liked playing harps and had a knack for solving riddles. He gets plucked from home by an elder harpist to solve possible world ending riddles. Since it's a trilogy and not a very long one instead of different cultures, Patricia placed emphasis on the Land. The various regions of the realm shaped its rulers and peoples. Of course there is magic, but again it comes from the land: he must learn from the land and draw its power into himself. The big battle is the payoff: our fisherman is the Chosen One, the heir to the entire realm. It was a great intro and still one of my favorite rereads. But now I understand where that storyline originated. Don't think I'd have 'connected the dots' without this video. So, many thanks.

I recently came across a chart that listed the length of various fantasy series. I was so shocked to see how much longer the Wheel of Time is compared to Discworld. Like, Discworld seemed incredibly long when I got into it, and now that I’m past a fourth of it, seeing the length of Wheel of Time was still jarring. I do fully intend to read it, I just don’t know where the hell I will find the time to. It might take me finishing high school and uni before I can even start it xD

Yeah, but the length is attributable to excessive verbage given to certain extraneous scene details and individuals' feelings and shit. I skipped pages and pages and pages of such, as I read the series and I think the whole series could have easily been half the number of books.

I remember finishing A Memory of Light and realizing for the first time in over a decade (I started the series after book 6 had been out so was able to catch up) I didn't have a Wheel of Time book on the horizon to wait for. I eventually started into Sanderson's books, but I recall it was such an odd feeling that it was actually over. I still go back and read some of the scenes over and over again. Not sure I'd rate it the best ever -- I think Tolkien holds that honor still for me, and the epic nature of Malazan is still stunning, but without a doubt it's one of the most influential fantasy series of all time.

Great video Daniel! Couldn't have said it better myself. Obviously, I feel the same way about the series. People don't know what they are missing out on by not reading these books. I think one of the nuanced things that you pick up even more after a couple re-reads is how well Robert Jordan does the "unreliable narrator" A bit of Holden Caulfield in each of the POVs we get from our characters. It can sometimes be infuriating for the reader because we have more information than the characters do, but they really don't see the same event the same way and he does such an excellent job of fleshing out the way these different perceptions would actually play out in the way the characters act on what they see. Another great video. Keep up the good work man and I'll see you at JordanCon!

In some cases (see: book 3) he's hardly in the book at all, and so the other characters are looking at what happened with events he's involved with and are left speculating, adding a feel of mystery to Rand while still keeping him grounded and giving you all his inner monologue and thought processes. I dunno. I think the first 2-3 books are fantastic, and once I got around to finishing the series I thought Sanderson delivered a much stronger ending than I expected. But in the middle it feels like a real slog - and by middle, I mean "most of 6-8 massive books." I've sometimes thought that I should give it another chance and start a reread, but each time somewhere in "The Fires of Heaven" or "Lord of Chaos" I feel like things are dragging with 9 or 10 books still to go. It's great that so many people are passionate about it, but it's not for me.

I have always been a big lover of the fantasy and high fantasy genre, a couple of years back i was in a Tesco grabbing a sandwich, on my way out of the store i saw a book shelf, all books pre-owned for £1 with the proceeds going to charity, i picked up one battered book, 'The Eye of the World' and did not stop reading until i had finished the series, to this day I consider the moment I thought "fuck it, why not take a peek" as one of the best decisions i ever made xD

Lordy, you made me want to read them again. I read the first half a good 25 years ago but never finished the series. I read it throughout high school, college, and then dropped off. When I heard Robert Jordan had died I figured it was over and I hadn't known someone else finished the series until recently, or that it's going to be a television series. My inner 15-year-old never thought she'd see the day when fantasy was accepted and loved on the big and small screen.

I think i read the first six books a while back but gave up. I found most of the characters annoying even though the general plot was great. The way the author kept having the one character tug her braid annoyed me, petty but it seemed to happen a lot. I’ve been thinking of starting them again

As a fantasy lover, it's great to have found your channel (even if so late). Have you read much classical literature, like the Epic of gilgamesh, Virgil's Aeneid, Tale of Genji? Just curious because it's pretty much the same stuff, but rather than just being entertainment to us, it was the way of the world to the peoples and cultures in ancient times. Knowing and understanding stuff like that helps me appreciate the material we have now, especially being the original inspirations for modern literature.

I’ve never read any books from the wheel of Time series, but I love the fantasy genre and this was a very well thought out and communicated pitch to read it. I’m absolutely going to check it out, thanks for this video!

I totally started wheel of time because of you and the first book so far blows away the show so hard. I would love one day a tier list on best narrators for audiobooks! As far as audiobooks go a bad narrator can ruin an amazing story and in turn a top tier narrator can make a mediocre story captivating. I personally have to say Rosamund Pike, the new narrator for wheel of time who also plays Moiraine in the show 100% kills it, and in my opinion blows the previous narrators out of the water. Rosamund Pike did such a good job I immediately pre ordered her narrated version of "The Great Hunt" which finally comes out in just a couple of days and can't wait to hear and learn the story. Though I don't think the show will finish the series because comparatively it's not great, I genuinely hope she continues to finish narrating the story. 10/10 recommend listening to her rendition of it.

Brandon Sanderson was my #1 incentive to finish the Wheel of Time series. I had stopped at #8 long ago. Last year, I decided to start over again so that I could get to the Brandon Sanderson finale. And I don't regret it one bit!

I'm 4 books in and just don't get the "wow this series is amazing" feeling. It seems like a very generic fantasy series for me, and I just don't feel connected to any of the characters.

Ok so this video basically lays down a gauntlet that any self-respecting fantasy fan will perceive as a right of passage. I ran across one of the books in this series in an airport bookstore while waiting for a flight. I could not, for the life of me, get a feel for the book(s) no matter how many times I read a paragraph except to say man this is sprawling... maybe when I’m retired. This video brought that memory back to me and now that I’m retired I accept your challenge, sir! Thx for this...

I stopped at the path of daggers. I was very fond of the books but Jordan just couldn't pull it together. The writing become tedious to read and the characters were just two dimensional figments by the time I quit. His writing of females always felt very cliched to me and it's something that I wish Sanderson was not so inspired by as all his women have been very very similar to Jordan's. All that to say he really had something special going on and I have heard that Sanderson ended it fairly well. Maybe one day I will jump back in and have a complete picture of it. I really love the genre and have been reading a lot of it for years now. I love the fact that this channel is reviewing all these books. I will definitely subscribe and continue watching. Thank you for your content

It's easier to read and do a marathon since all the books are finished now, and we don't have to wait a year or two between books. Brandon Sanderson is my #1 reason to re-read these books. I had also stopped at #8 years ago.

@@LoyaFrostwind in a genre that has some of it's best names taking almost a decade between books it's refreshing that he can publish so frequently. But sometimes it really shows in his work. There are passages in Oathbringer that make me really wish he would spend more time on his prose. I love his ideas but it's hard for me to get too excited for him when he seems to lose his commitment to quality work just to get things done. IDK I kinda hate bringing up Sandersons flaws to people because I really do believe in what he is doing but at the same time the quality if his writing and even most of his characters feel really rushed to me

Just a little tip.....never look at the wiki until you finish the series. Especially the main characters pages, even if it’s to figure out someone’s pronunciation. If you do get massive events and the fates of characters spoiled and it sucks. Don’t even google it because the first thing that comes up will be the date of that characters death (if the died). they seriously should move where that information is placed so people don’t get stuff spoiled so easily.
