WHY You Should Remap / Tune YOUR Car 

Getting a remap / tune / chip on your car is getting more and more common these days, and since I've had some experience with them I thought I'd share my thoughts and tips about them. What is a remap? Pros and cons? Should YOU do it to your car?

For a fully stock car, is a piggyback chip tuner "good enough" compared to a proper remap?

my warranty will run out in about half a year, so i 'm really thinking about getting it tuned a little... i have a 2L petrol mazda cx-3 with 120hp (detuned version of the 146hp model for economy/tax/insurance purposes, exact same engine -- i'm in western europe btw) and a standard remap will take it to 180hp and 214nm. i'm pretty sure i'd feel that difference..

Mini One 1.6 2010 (R56) (60 plate) - would you say this is worth re-mapping? I’m not sure if the Mini One’s/ this particular model Mini One has the engine of a Mini cooper which the ECU has been powered down? Need a bit of background on this hmm. Thanks

Thanks for the info! I've got an Astra GTC 2.0 cdti version and am fancying something faster. As I'm looking to save for other things it would make sense to get it remapped and save on buying something else. It has around 85k on the clock atm and I do a lot of miles with works so that will climb and climb. Is mileage a factor when mapping a car? It's all in good nick and is serviced annually, never puts a foot wrong

I have a Peugeot 208 gti, as it's a performance car already would you recommend getting a stage 1 remap. They are 200 standard and a remap takes them up to 230 roughly. But I don't want to risk damaging the car in anyway. Spoke to the tuning company and they seem like they know what they are doing. However he did say don't do anything more than a stage 1 without adding a new intercooler, clutch etc. As the original parts can't handle the power increase. Any thoughts?

Don't get a remap! Cons: You should tell your insurance which will cost you more. Your engine and gearbox might be fine but what about all the other stuff like driveshafts and flywheels? If you want a faster car why not just buy one that's built from factory to be reliable like that? I had an audi a5 tdi 170bhp mapped to around 200bhp and started getting flywheel issues a year later due to the increased torque. Just bought an audi s5 with 333bhp from stock and I think why didn't I just buy that to start with?

A lot of people say not to remap a small engined car (Polo MK5 1.2) but I did it anyway because there was a decent offer on over this festive period. Didn't 'transform' the car by any means but it did definitely eliminate some flat spots and there was a noticeable increase in acceleration. Would I say it was worth it? Depends on how much you pay. I only paid £80 (price slashed from £250) so for me it was worth it, wouldn't pay more though on a car like this.

Dont do it , if you want more power then buy a more powerful car . If these remaps all great for a car then they would come with 100k warranty . Blown engines are not cheap to replace

And you tell your car insurer and they insist on accurate power performance figures and it's a pain in the butt without a Dyno,my insurer wants to know what power performance percentage increase the car has after the Map. And i would not risk not being honest with the insurance company and voiding my insurance if i was involved in a crash and they checked my car to get out of paying me out,so i would choose a tuning box over any other tune so i can remove it fast myself. Most insurers will allow a small percent performance tune free or for just a small extra fee. RaceChip iv'e used a few times not too hard to fit most of the time.

This invalidates your car insurance. If you declare the upgrade to your insurance provider, they will cancel your insurance. They will REFUSE to provide insurance cover. They will NOT amend the quotation. Big risk.

There is a stock car for every common demand. Unless you want to power your car on coal or uranium, tuning is pointless

When you buy a brand new car, diesel or petrol, ordinary or high performance any of these cars should be able to give you anywhere between a life of 150 000 to 250 000 miles if properly serviced and well taken care of...the moment you re-map the ECU be it with 20 bhp or 70 bhp more you are cutting down the life of that car by approximately 75%, which means if the car were to last you 12 years it will last you 3 until you begin to have problems. I re-mapped a Pug 206 turbo diesel that had 90 bhp up to 105 bhp that's only 15 bhp more at the most reputable place in Portugal and after 2 years of re-mapping it I began to have problems....so if you want to be a dick and ruin your beautiful brand new car that cost you hard cash that you made through days and months and maybe years of hard work then go re map the ECU ...and you'll end up in tears....or be a man and OWN the car you have because contrary to what your friends tell you more horse power does not make your dick grow.
