Why You Should Run Linux on your Mac 

Are you running Linux on your older Mac? If so, what distro are you using?

I’ve got a mid-2012 MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey and Kubuntu 22.04 on OpenCore dual-boot. Even got a late 2006 MacBook running Kubuntu 22.04. All work like a charm!

This earned me a subscribe coz I've been running Linux Os on older/unsupported MacBook laptops. My recent was a MacBook Pro circa 2008, upon upgrading the RAM to 8GB, i realized that it's missing WIFI drivers after i installed Linux Mint XFCE, Linux Lite however comes with WiFi drivers, but it wouldn't install, so i ended up installing on another laptop and transplanting the HDD into the Mac and suffice to say I'm happy about the outcome coz now I'm able to browse the internet & watch RU-vid videos on the device. Very informative video, I'd be looking out for more of your content.

Superb video. Absolutely the best way to use old Macs. I'm using Linux Mint on an early 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro. Runs fantastically well. Same issue regarding the WiFi driver, but so easy to fix.

I have a first generation MacBook Air (the early 2008 one) that does not support anything newer than Mac OS Lion (10.7). You can't get it to run anything newer, even with patches so I put Void Linux on it and it works perfectly and everything is supported, not out of the box, of course but it's easy to find the proper drivers and now it works wonderfully on the most recent Linux kernel and supports all of the newest apps.

I have LMDE with NsCDE on my 2017 MacBook Air and it works absolutely great, all the hardware works out of the box with an excellent range of software available as expected. I even like going back to the old school operating environment which takes me back to my Solaris roots!

This video came at the perfect time for me. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and I was on the fence about using Mint or another Linux distro on it. I'm going to take the plunge right now!

I was given a mid-2007 MacBook a few weeks ago. I put in an SSD and installed Lubuntu. Other than the WiFi and webcam not working (lacking the proper drivers), it’s a decent little machine.

Got a few older Mac’s (MB 07, MBP 09, iMac 09, MBA 12). Was searching on how to revive the MB07 and I knew about Linux but never used it. I am glad I ran into your channel as I want to install Linux/Ubuntu on that laptop first as a test rig. Need to check out the rest of your videos

I'm running Linux Mint 21.2 on at 2017 MBA (i7, 8GB, 1TB storage). It is quite zippy and runs like a champ. I've had no issues at all.

I could not agree with you more I have a 2008 iMac that most people think is garbage but I install Linux mint on it and I still use it to this day as my daily driver. I got my use out of this I’ve been using it since 2009 every day all day watching movies on it I use it like my TV is the perfect computer never any glitches, plenty powerful enough to watch RU-vid play games. It’s a shame how many computers get thrown in the garbage that are actually better than the computers you could buy on the shelf at Walmart

I'm running Garuda Linux on my 2010 Mac Pro which is maxed out w/ dual Xeon X5690's (12 cores, 24 threads @ 3.5Ghz). It's 13 years old now but still a beast and is my daily driver. It's running dual 2TB NVME's duplexed via Sonnet PCIe card, 4x12TB HDD RAID5 internal storage & AMD RX 580 8GB GPU. I also use a TruNAS for backups using Vorta/Borg. It has been hosting my private NextCloud for synchronizing/sharing files with my & my family's systems (MBPro, iPhone, iPad). I chose Garuda for it's Arch Linux base, access to the Arch AUR repos, Btrfs for snapshots, Garuda utilities that make certain tasks quick & easy, and very active & helpful Garuda community forums.

I installed Ubuntu on my old Intel MacBook Pro. It recognized all my hardware and it runs much faster than macOS. I can even read the files on the Apple Filesystem (APFS) partition.

LinuxMint LXDE w/ Openbox flies! Ubuntu repos have everything I need too.

I installed Linux mint 21.3 beta on mbp early 2011 17inches. Works great.

I am using Linux Mint with Cinnamon Desktop Env. on a Macbook Pro 6.1. Works like a charm. Apple M chips will be soon (already) supported by Linux. And I put the "taskbar" on top of the screen to get the Mac OS "ergonomy" (I do that also for my Windows machines). 😊 But did not add a Dock (there are few possibilities in the Linux Ecosystems). Ram after fresh installation: Ventura: 3gigs of ram filled. Windows 10 : 2 gigs of ram filled. More depending on the crap installed by the drivers. Windows 11 : 3gigs of ram filles. More depending on the crap installed by the drivers. Linux Mint l: 1 gig of ram filled (can be lower with you remove some Startup Applications). For Apple or Microsoft (or other commercial manufacturers), planned obsolescence is an "enjoyable" game.

I have several legacy Mac pro and laptop systems that hit the OS update wall at 10.13 High Sierra or 10.14 Mohave. I'm in process of migrating my entire media business and ecosystem to Linux, which will be a no brainer since I've been immersed in the GNU & FLOSS world for 24 years. Now that first class commercial media production apps like DaVinci and Bitwig Studio are available to supplement the plethora of free software tools I use on both my Mac and Linux systems, my niche needs are fully covered, PLUS I'll be able to start utilizing the updated versions that are no longer supported on legacy Mac OS. BTW, Your points about the accessibility, usability and an familiarity of Linux is more accurate today than ever before. The massive levels of user empowerment in freedom and choice and customization and control that Linux provides can just be a little overwhelming for people who aren't already the brave explorer type. 😉

Thanks a lot @Eevnos for your informative videos. I currently run Ubuntu 2022.10 on 2014 Macbook Pro 13", with 8 GB of RAM, and a 128 GB SSD, and it t runs wonderfully. My only problem with it is that if it shutdown for any reason, it takes a very long time to boot up again. Restarting, and waking up from sleep is fine. Have you faced any similar problem before? Could that possibly be a problem with the SSD? Thanks again, and please keep up the great work!

I am using a 2012 Unibody MacBook Pro with Pop!_OS. I've challenged myself to use it as a daily driver and it has been an adventure. I found it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to be a practical machine for my use case. One thing I haven't figured out is how to prevent the battery from overheating. I've installed TLP, CPU Power Manager, and fancontrol, which have been helpful, but it's still an issue. I wonder if anyone can share advice for configuring TLP to work for the Unibody MacBook Pro.

Fedora and Zorin seem to work the best for me on older Macs. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro running Fedora and a 2010 Mac Pro running Zorin.

I am about done rebuilding my late 2011 13' MBP. Since I had it disassembled for the last 2 years I've had no experience with the degradation of performance of running newer systems. I added an SSD and with the 16GB of RAM it should be quite stable and speedy but it feels like the original battery is slowing it down, I've pretty much replaced everything else but the motherboard and battery during the restoration process and awaiting for a replacement battery to arrive. Have you had any such quirks with these older machines? When I disconnect the charger it becomes visibly laggy. Also, big fan of Fedora and EndeavourOS. If it wasn't for the small inconvenience of the wireless driver and the repository ecosystem I'd move to Fedora but Arch based is my jam. Used Manjaro for a couple years and then when they had the certificate issues and some updates borked my system I tried out the recently released EndeavourOS and been on it since.

This seem interesting, i have a 2012 MacBook Pro 2.9Ghz i7, sadly only with 2 cores. i am thinking of installing Linux on it, but what about video editing, i know there is quite a few options for Linux these days, but will the Mac´s hardware in combination with Linux be able to edit full HD 1080p or even 4K videos better than iMovie would on the same machine ? Would Linux support 2 external thunderbolt displays on a unibody 2012 MBP? Right now, I have two thunderbolt displays daisy chained and hooked up to my 2012 MBP (i7,16gb ram, 500gb SSD). It works great but my MacBook runs very hot under load and starting to get a bit sluggish. Wondering if switching to Linux would work.

What's the battery/power consumption running linux versus old MacOS software. I would love to see basic battery life test of LINUX vs MACos on a Retina Display 2015 MBP. It's pretty much the only thing that gives me pause.

Now beat this. I am running a 2008 MacBook (Unibody) having a basic Intel Core2 Duo using Linux. I am using a flavor called ZorinOS Core. It is super cool, has Windows 11 look and works like magic! What if I tell you I am running it as a dedicated Plex Media Server? The Plex app works on all my client devices like magic!

How well does dual boot work? I remember reading a sometime back that the machines can start running into some issues. I still would like to keep my Mac OS on my old 2014 that still runs very smooth. My machine also has NVIDIA graphics that might be a problem on these mac linux machines.

I bought an used iMac 2.5" 2010 4gb 500HD High Sierra for 48 bucks. Installed full Ubuntu 22.04.1 on it, but screen goes black. I understand the ATI Radeon 4670 is not supported by Ubuntu, instead the signal goes to the external screen port. Have searched for ways to change the signal, but I'm not that used to terminal operations, it's hard for me to change drivers in the folders when running USB boot mode. Should I try install Fedora instead? I would like to identify some older iMac's to buy that works to install some stable and nice Linus on. I have three kids and myself, I don't want to support Apple or Windows more. I'm ready to do my lite computer needs with a stable Linux system. I do like the Apple hardware feeling and look. If iMac's works, I'll later transform my 2015 MBP15" also.

I installed Mint Debian Faye on a 2017 i5 macbook. Only the sound had to be tweaked for drivers. I had to use the terminal and enter commands.

Have a 2010, mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive) that, I want to install a version of Linux on. Please show us how, you can reformat your computer to have 2 or 3 different OS's at the same time. For example OS X 10.13 High Sierra, Windows, and a version of Linux under different sections of your hard drive/SSD all at the same time (smile...smile).

hey, i have a late 2013 15' MBP, i've tried putting linux on it (mint, Fedora, ubuntu,) and everytime it runs really oddly slow and then ends up borking it self when i try to update it or install something. does anyone know why this is or what i can do to resolve it? i have had no issues running linux on other machines or other macs (2009 Macbook and 2007 iMac) Thanks!

I’ve not delved too deep into the Linux world but definitely a good thing be aware of. I thought Linux didn’t have a lot of software to use. The Fedora layout looks really nice.

The only issue that may pose a problem is the NVIDIA graphics card in certain Mac models that have Intel Core2Duo microprocessors.

Linux Mint Gnome version on 2012 Macbook Pro

I have a mid 2014 Macbook Pro Retina which is prone to "black screen" due to substandard components on the motherboard. Far as I can tell it crashes when it tries to switch to low power mode, bad Mosfet's on the main board. Any idea if the operating system switch resolves this in any way? I've been an ardent Apple user since the late 1980's and I'm done with them but the thought of going to anything Windows or google makes me want to puke.

I got macOS 13.4 & Ubuntu MATE 22.04.2 LTS installed on my MBP 9,2 (upgraded to 16GB RAM & 480GB SSD) and honestly Linux feels so much faster than macOS 13.4 does.
