You didn’t mention the safety aspect of methanol, invisible fire is bad, most people have never seen it ( no pun intended ) and you should be running a comprehensive fire suppression system as well as better fire suits, Tom Bailey has a great video on this I highly recommend watching for anyone considering running methanol fuel. Be safe to race another day.

Surprised they don't add a dye to it like they do diesel, probably wouldn't cost refiners anything to use an ashless dye that would give the flames more color. I saw Bailey video.. scary stuff for sure.

Good point. I was thinking about it before I filmed the video, but forgot to actually put it in the video.

Since you are running a coolant system, you can lean out the idle. A lot of the “milking” is from guys running it really rich all the time because they don’t have a cooling system. Also if you just let the motor heat up the oil each time you start it, you’ll also be fine.

Great video. I’ve yet to run pure meth but I’ve ran a dual fuel setup which made 50% of my fuel load at full boost be meth and it worked amazingly well

That's why I inject methanol into the intake manifold with it's own pump and tank and injector. I still use an intercooler and no concern with my gasoline fuel system which uses 100octane. I do however do 1k oil changes as this is a street car not a race car.
@b.c4066
@b.c4066 2 года назад
Curious, do you buy oil in drums and filters by the case? Thinking the rate of inflation I might save money buying a 25-55 gallon of oil and a couple cases of filters for my street car. I have two Chevies so it should make my maintenance costs a little lower. Advice?

evaporative cooling is the process you are describing at 2:00. the boiling point of the liquid is what determines the evaporative cooling. methanol is one of the most volatile alcohols and it just so happens to have a carbon oxygen bond and a lone pair of electrons surrounding it. methanol has a very low calorie count so the stoichiometry is roughly just under half of what gasoline is. ethanol is slightly higher boiling point, and is roughly 3/4 the stoichiometry as gasoline. it takes 3 molecules of oxygen to combust 1 molecule of ethanol. it takes 1.5 molecules of oxygen to combust 1 molecule of methanol. methanol is a very good polar protic solvent, so it requires special lines, tank, pumps and injectors. by knowing the chemistry and how to balance a combustion equation we can calculate how much ethanol/methanol is needed to be used. You should also ring your pistons specifically for methanol as you will likely wash a cylinder clean of oil with the volume of fuel being used. you should also bump the compression up significantly as methanol/ethanol are knock resistant. part of why methanol engines make more power is because you can safely rev them higher with more aggressive ignition timing. the higher boost plus that ignition timing = power. the rpm is where you see the best gains on methanol at least in my experience. ps. methanol burns invisible and you had better have a VERY GOOD fire supression system built into the car. i can show you what happens when you run methanol with open downpipe that dumps under the car... i know of several cars where the entire car burned to the ground.

Calvin, im sure its crossed your mind but why not run on E85 until the trans brake is activated and have a tune that switches to Methanol for the pass then revert back to E85 when driving back to the pits?

SRC runs meth on the S10. They use a lean-out valve during the warm-up to help prevent milking the oil.

Just testing straight methanol with no intercooler on a 4 cylinder at the moment, like you say it means I'm lighter and I've had it up to 40psi up to yet, though I was expecting a reasonable drop in temp with a single 210lb spraying into the chargepipe but was still seeing 150c by the end of the run so didn't seem to make a massive difference
@Calvin-Nelson
@Calvin-Nelson 2 года назад
Needs more methanol
@turbotoaster1984
@turbotoaster1984 2 года назад
@@Calvin-Nelson I've wired the car for 10 injectors so I can add another 210lb in the chargepipe so see if that helps, it's nice looking at the EGTs and seeing it 200c cooler than with gas/ethanol. Are you planning on just running any in the chargepipe or just in the rail, also will you switch 100% over in the tune to methanol as it comes into boost or still run a mix?
@Calvin-Nelson
@Calvin-Nelson 2 года назад
@@turbotoaster1984 we'll just use the ones in the rail. Plan is to leave the ethanol injectors firing. So maybe 50/50.
@turbotoaster1984
@turbotoaster1984 2 года назад
@@Calvin-Nelson I did a back to back test on the dyno at middle boost of 25psi and there was a 70bhp difference between straight methanol and ethanol (530/460bhp) so I would try and run say 70/30% if you can, what are you doing for fuel pump?
@b.c4066
@b.c4066 2 года назад
I'm no expert, but genuinely curious and trying to learn. But is shaving 35-50 pounds off the nose of the car worth the increased iat you experience? I mean with control of iat using an intercooler your tuning window would be wider, and most likely take more timing right? Surely that would allow you to make more power safer and offset the added weight wouldn't it?

Have you researched what oil to use? I have seen 1 brand of oil allow the methanol separate and settle on the bottom of the oil pan.

that has to be an excuse, im an analytical chemist and it would be pretty easy to check for adulterants in fuel. if i can findout what you ate last week by looking at your blood it would be a walk in the park to find some hydrocarbons in a solution.
