Fabulous shot. I really like that you keep it natural looking. There seems to be a horrible tendency to edit images to look like something out of Lord of Rings nowadays, so it's so nice to see something that looks like a scene we would actually see.

Thanks John yeah there’s a pressure for young and emerging photographers to produce fantasy style images for visual impact on social media though many haven’t developed the necessary post processing skills/understanding of colour and end up making a pigs ear of it.

Cheers glad you enjoyed it, I think the key is just being flexible and in situations like the coast there’s definitely still a place for a reverse grad where there’s no hilltops to contend with and the horizon is completely flat.

@StuartMcGlennon

Yes it's a technique which is pretty straightforward although many shy away from using, the advent of better dynamic range in sensors and also great masking programmes makes this sort of image relatively straightforward when perhaps in the past it would have been a lot more problematic.

@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Cheers mate yeah the gradient tool gives a nice soft feather, then set the brush very low flow and a very soft edge then just brush to suit. The key with the two frames exposed for the foreground is to make sure they match each other in exposure so when you mask the thumb out the brightness of the layer underneath matches the one on top 👍
@ianpinion4997

Another great video from a fabulous location and very informative as usual. I tend to not shoot directly into the sun if I can, as part of my brain believes that low side lighting rather trumps it on most occasions. I guess it depends on your location as to what's best under the circumstances. Anyway, to make you feel better, it was my turn this week to make a 'schoolboy error'. About a 15 minute walk from my home are a couple of trees across open fields, so yesterday afternoon I went for a trek to go recce them. I popped my 70 - 200mm f/4 on the front and off I went. Once I got in range I had a bit of a walk around to see if I could find any nice foreground or potential lead in lines. Set up in position, thought about my settings a moment and decided to use f/8 - f/9 as beyond the trees was some woodland in the distance in shadow, so I didn't need it to be completely sharp to the horizon. Focused the camera and fired off a few shots. However, I forgot to check my depth of field and I'd focused to close to the camera, so the two lovely trees were outside the area of acceptable sharpness. Trouble is I only discovered this once I'd got them back on my pc. Doh!!! Gutted! Well, at least they're close-ish to home, so I can go back and try again, but honestly, what should have I done whilst out in the field that I didn't do? Also, I'm facing nearly due south taking these trees, so what time of day do you think would be best to shoot them and what conditions should I shoot them in?
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks Ian, hard to advise without being there though I'd imagine if you're shooting due south either ends of the day for some strong sidelight would work well, i tend to like shooting woodland with the light at 45-90 degrees from me though there's no right or wrong , depends on other factors like how dense or sparse the woodland is also. As far as your sharpness issue goes, simple answer is focus on the tree that you think is going to be most prominent or your main subject and focus on that

Stuart - I recently did a talk to my Camera Club about my trip to the Lakes before the first lockdown and spoke quite a lot about stacking and blending being better than using graduated filters in the field (in my opinion) but didn't have time to demonstrate some of the techniques (I also use Luminosity Masks); this video is such an excellent demonstration of the simpler techniques that I've posted a link to my clubs Facebook Page (hopefully you might get a few more susbscribers!).
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks Steve appreciate that - my approach tends to be if I’m not time constrained and it can be controlled with a grad filter without being destructive to the raw file (darkening mountain tops mainly) then I’ll use one if nothing else to save file space and get in one shot however scenes like this any kind of filtration is basically useless and can only be overcome using masks etc. I think it’s something that a newer generation of photographers are perhaps more comfortable with
@gruagach1
@gruagach1 3 года назад
Another stoater, I had no idea there was a fort up there. I was just glad when the car managed to get to the top. I made actions for luminosity masks but never use them I much prefer layer masks. Don't know if it's because I used to paint in watercolour or not I just prefer that method and the look it gives.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks mate much appreciated - for basic blends like this the layer masks do just fine to be honest though I do like using luminosity tools for more detailed work with tougher edges to content with

@steveforden
@steveforden 3 года назад
This is very helpful mate, been looking for a video on this very subject. In terms of exposure bending, I've just been using the hdr option in Lightroom which is sort of OK but I do end up normally spending a bit of time then trying to have to correct and make sure it doesn't look too hdr. Maybe I need to start using more subtle ways to exposure blend.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks Steve it can be a little bit of a minefield can't it - the HDR method isn't a bad one though sometimes it can be a little hard to visualise the final result as you're only working on the one file, also if you've got any kind of fast moving parts in the scene like I had here (clouds) you can get odd artifacts sometimes when the HDR file has been produced. That's not to say it's a bad method and in the right hands you can get the same result though from my own workflow perspective it can be tricky to 'see' the end result while processing the file if that makes sense.
@steveforden
@steveforden 3 года назад
@@StuartMcGlennon yeah, that does make sense and the cloud artefact can be a big problem in some situations. Interesting point on visualisation, hadn't considered that.
@thomasgreen750
@thomasgreen750 3 года назад
Another great video mate. Just trying to get to grips with luminosity masking (with lumenzia) at the moment myself, have always just used layers and brush when blending images previously. Thought I'd just ask, are you still using grads at the minute and if so, can you see yourself moving away from them at any point? I currently have the full kase 150mm kit with grads and just the Kase circular nd kit with 3,6,10 stop and a polariser. Keep leaning towards selling the grads in favour of blending, just haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet (also never been able to work out how to blend more than two files together in photoshop which can have limitations haha)!
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks pal in terms of grads I’d say I use them less than I used to for sure, there’s many scenes where if there’s no sun involved I’ll just shoot using ETTR making sure I’m not clipped then dial backs skies etc from there. Basically if I’ve got time and I can get it close to perfect I’ll still use grads though I think with modern sensors they’re far less of a requirement.
@huwalban
@huwalban 3 года назад
An instant like from me. One of the explanations of this technique that I've seen. Thanks Stuart. Just a quick question though - roughly how many stops under were you for capturing the sky image? Thanks. Stay warm and safe sir.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks Huw glad you found it useful, the sky exposure is extremely dark I think about 4 stops under, normally if I’m bracketing I’ll do 3 frames 2 stops apart however if it’s really bright like this one I’ll do 5 frames and then at least I’ve more data to choose from
