The average farmer in America makes less than 15 cents of every dollar on a product that you purchase at a store. They feed our communities, but farmers often cannot afford the very foods they grow. In this actionable talk, social entrepreneur Mohammad Modarres shows how to put your purchasing power into action to save local agriculture from collapse and transform the food industry from the bottom up.

I am a small farmers.Not only do we need you to come to the farmers market or find another way to connect, but we need you to understand at small scale we can give you quality but not cheap prices.If if don't make profit it's a hobby. I need to be able profit so new potential farmers will be attracted to the industry. Thanks to all.

Love my local farmer's market. Even though it's in an area with bad, long winters, it's open three times a week year-round and has the best tasting fruits and vegetables in the area. 😊

I am an Agriculture under graduate student.... the major problem in market is farmers are not paid fair for their service. I have practiced cultivating crops and paddy. I know how farmers dedicate their time and everything just to feed us 3 times a day. So value farmers and give them a support....

I believe part of the problem with produce prices is that every farmer ends up selling to the same 5 corporate clients, if farmers can sell a portion to the local market they make more per unit and depend less from those huge single buyers.

Here in Indonesia, the ppl like shopping at local market even though sometimes the price is a bit expensive than the wholesaler store. *People shop there because we know n understand that the profit from the selling can help them (the local sellers) to provide for their family, take their child to school, take them to the doctor if they're sick, etc basically empower them economically. And also we can build a stronger friendship/relationship with our community, get fresh food (veggies,fruits) we need, and get the least package food that means less waste too (good for environment )* So yeahh I absolutely agree with you, Sir😊 Greetings from Indonesia❤

Farmland folks are trampled by 1st generations and , city folk & other places of worship dhipping in behind the scenes without 1st being in persom or staying in shepherd mode which means grow a huge flock fast once youve got a cord interest set. I am bound to artists high & low thru LatinAmerica as barrios. thats a mission in and of itself for which ive NONAME

But still beware at farmers markets because the farmers don’t all have integrity. My friend once bought fruit from a farmer but found a grocery store sticker on one of them later. Be attentive.

Shop at your local farmer's markets, because in a poor country (like Nepal, where I am from), it is a question of survival for them rather than of profit.

Make sure the food your buying though is actually from a local farm and isn't just grocery store food from the same vendors that are the same quality.

In the US Pacific NW we are lucky to have a year round growing season. The produce varies with the seasons and that is hard to get used to. But in the long run it is good to live in synch with the seasons and with the local. We have community markets for food and crafts the become cultural events with music and plays. You can not imagine what a pizza is like until you make one with fresh basil, oregano, tomato, etc. It is not the same thing or experience. The markets are just as special.

My farmers markets are dominated by pop-up vendors selling the latest Instagrammable fusion food. Good for them. I'm all for small business but I way prefer roadside/parking lot fruit and veg tents which I go to just about every week in the summer. It really is a great way to help the local farmers make a bit of profit on their surplus.

Here local farm produce are on shelves right next to industrial produce in the supermarkets, makes it easier and saves money on distribution for the local farmers, which in turn makes the local produce cheaper. win/win/morechoices/win

Not really any farmers markets around here, the ones that are, you can only go to in the winter, as in the summer all the produce wilts in a short amount of time, also no set space for one. The prices better be the same or less than the grocery store.

Quite simple: A dollar to an actual human being (local producer) is much more valuable than the same dollar to some corporate chain's balance sheet. Much, much more. Why would you spend your money inefficiently? Sure, you get a similar product either way and maybe a bit cheaper, but don't you care what happens to your money? After all, it's 100% us, people, whose spent money powers the entire economy, nothing else. If you knew that someone takes your money and burns it, wouldn't you rather spend it elsewhere? Doesn't it feel good that you get to help someone like a producer or small business at the same time? Corporations can undercut small businesses with the power of scale, so it's a never-ending cycle of putting everyone else out of business - unless YOU look beyond the few cents' difference and realize the impact you have with choosing where you spend

Exactly! Most farmers - who benefit from the sales they make at their farmers markets - invest their purchasing power locally, at their local hardware store for example. On the other hand, purchases made at your large grocery stores may never be reinvested into the local communities they are established in.

Here in the UK the farmers market is a massive rip off. Cutting all the middle men out seems to double the price of the produce.

We sell grass fed beef. It's the most accurate label I can put on the beef.I cannot source organic hay.Our pasture has been in organic production for years but we must start feeding hay right now.

Why should local farmers have to cut their prices down because a couple people don't like their prices? Aren't they working hard to earn that price to sell at?

The problem is that farmers markets are more expensive than typical grocery stores. I love farmers markets, bu they aren't accessibly to all people simply because of price. Plus they aren't as convenient (they aren't as numerous, only open certain days, and don't carry everything you might need). We need to find a way to incentivize people to use farmers markets more often and make it easier than using normal grocery stores.

The thing is in UK most items at farmers are more expensive. I am okay with making the more sustainable choice, but certainly poverty and those with smaller incomes cannot afford the prices. And I don't mean 'a pound a bowl' types, because I dont think they are bringing it from local farms only the middle man for cheaper produce (ie not pesticide free). Or can someone correct me?

2years I got tired on going to Farmer's Mkt as SF Costco has everything organic at better prices, and Farmer Mkts lead up to the final hour twice a week. I used to love going to Farmer Mkts on the Peninsula & SF, now no longer!

Yes, you would be paying for the labour and effort that it took to grow those veggies locally. Ends up, when a corporate entity is looking for the highest profit, they work their employees to the bone and sell their product dirt cheao, since they produce so much. It's so much healthier to buy local.

Traders shouldnt handle many $. That oughtta be a splintdr lien or, a multinational card and major grocery store. We born here ought be the switch operators in every sense as infrastructures into my office and the farmers market has a right to be live at the pulpit in goshen.

For a bunch a cilantro at my local farmers market is $3. It's .50 cents at the grocery store. I can't afford to go broke doing my average job just to eat. I think this type of euphoric ideology is just lost on the average consumer.

While I don't dive deeper into climate change, it does have an immense impact on our farmers. The last year has been incredibly difficult for many types of American farmers because of the natural disasters linked to our changing climate.

Profits from our local farming cooperative mainly go to fund the Local Only help feed the needy program and to help w those cut off from electric or utilities in the middle of winter here in America's 1st Municipality aka Summers County,Wv . This is more help than the DHHR esp since their programs have been gutted since the Trump Admin and Lack of proper Governance by Legislature ; yes I do Assert they Do not Care for Doing their Constitutional duties in many areas and I place alot of the Blame on Alec the screw over the People American Legislative Exchange Council who still claims Non profit status WRONGLY . Look them up sometime and understand How Evil they truly are . Shop Local Not Global . My grocery store is Union run ; so No I don't buy my groceries at Walmart ! If You'ld like to donate to Our local help the needy program Look up Fishes & Loaves in Hinton, Wv and ask for Earl ; Earl is a wonderful Man and so are the other people who work or volunteer there .
