It’s great for hydration. Especially when you have dumb pigs like me, they think it’s a fun game to knock their water out as soon as you give them fresh 🙄 Works great for chickens too, if you do grains for the chickens. The stinkier the better lol. Great video, you touched on a lot of great points!

You gotta get those piggies trained to nipples. No good for the winter but the only way to go in the summer.

@@Rockin8Farm my pigs will hod their nose to the nipples for hours trying to get wet in hot summer days and then lay in the water under the nipples

Dude, you rock. I watched a couple videos when I was thinking about getting IPP's. I brought them home a few days ago and have watched more of you since. Definitely subscribing. Not sure if anyone in your house is a sourdough baker but if you have discard you can add a little bit when you prep your next pig meal and it will really speed up fermentation. I did it with barley for my goats and chickens.

How did you determine your pigs protein needs? We are raising red Wattles, also primarily on pasture, but haven’t found just the right food/pasture ratio
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm Год назад
It’s well known among this breed that you want to try to get into the 18-20% protein realm. I would talk to someone at a breed association for red wattles and see if there is a standard for raising them on pasture.

Do you use this as a creep feed for the piglets too? Do your temps stay mostly above freezing? I feed my adults soaked feed, but just had our first litter and am wondering how that might work. It doesn't get above freezing here all winter long. So everything freezes.
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm Год назад
Ok here we go. Yes my piglets eat this same feed. At first they sneak bites from mom's bowl and as they show more interest I start putting multiple bowls down so they get more of the feed. Our temps for the most part stay above freezing. However, I have friends in colder climates that soak their feed and just keep in in a utility room or well house or somewhere that is doesn't freeze as it soaks. As far as the bowls go...whatever the piglets don't finish up before mom is done will get consumed by mom so it doesn't have time to freeze in the pans. Hope this helps

What is the 40% protein supplement that you recommend?
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm Год назад
It's a product of a local mill called 40% VMP. You'll have to talk to your mill of feed provider about what is available in your area. I have actually moved away from this. I now go through more than ton of feed per month so I have a complete feed with all the minerals and protein included custom made for me by a mill 3 hours from my farm.
@janajgtezz6627

where do you get your mineral mix?
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm 2 года назад
The mineral I’m using now is custom mixed by a mill in Oklahoma. It is the same mix as Nexgen 2090 made by a company called Kent. You can get Nexgen on Amazon if it’s not available in your area but after shipping it is $72 a bag. So it’s worth it to me to drive to OK (6 hours) to get my new mineral for $30 a bag. Where do you live?

How long should you let it soak? How long is too long?
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm 3 года назад
The way I do it is the easy way. We have discovered that an hour is long enough for the water to be absorbed. So if you forget to do it in advance you can just feed an hour late that meal. The easy way is to feed breakfast and get dinner ready. When you feed dinner get breakfast ready. I would say that if you are going any longer than that you’ll want to make sure all of the feed is completely submerged and you just ferment it for a few days.

Commercial feeds contain mineral additives
@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm Год назад
Yes they do but not enough for an IPP. IPPs eat less feed and eat more grass that commercial hogs. The mineral content in commercial feed is measured so that if a hog is eating say 5 pounds per day they will get the right amount of daily mineral. But if you’re only feeding you IPP 3 pounds per day you need to add mineral to that they get what they need.

@Rockin8Farm
@Rockin8Farm Год назад
@@arthurdewith7608 yes exactly. And these pigs because of their short upturned nose and because we meet their mineral requirements through adding extra mineral, root very little if at all. I have over 50 pigs and piglets on my farm right now and I have zero rooting.

Thanks for the tip and I greatly appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately, with my available time, equipment, software etc, what you see is what you get. I don't have hours of B-roll on file and if I did I don't have time to edit it in. I'm a film, edit and post all from my iPhone in less then 30 minutes guy. I have been told by multiple people that if I followed your tips my channel would skyrocket....I just don't have the time for it.
