I get it now!!! I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's as a child (over 50 years ago). My parents were told I would just have to take a pill a day for the rest of my life. Not one doctor has ever told me about the effects of gluten on Hashimoto's disease. Sara, I have never been gluten free my whole life. Is there a point where the damage to my gut cannot be undone?

My question is I have Hashimoto for 5 years ( at least) I went to a gluten free diet soon after researching about it. Why it’s not reversing after years of gluten free diet ?

I loved the way you drew and explained the mechanism. I have a doubt. For a normal person, what does zonulin do to the gut? I mean most people don't have leaky gut issue though wheat (with gluten) is their staple food. How come zonulin doesn't affect their gut? I'm trying to understand the same mechanism in people with healthy gut.
@SaraPeternell
@SaraPeternell 3 года назад
Thank you so much for watching! Researchers have found that everyone in all groups, from celiac to non-celiac gluten sensitive to normal controls, all experienced increases in inflammatory markers and in markers of leaky gut when consuming gluten/wheat and the resultant increase of zonulin. Not everyone will have symptoms or go on to have autoimmune disease. There are many other factors that play a role.

I am 59 and have Hashimotos. I am in month Six now of gluten and dairy free. As well as following the AIP. So grateful that I finally sought out a functional medicine doctor. This video is one that I will share with my family as it is presented in such a way that it is easy to understand. My concern is that my 33 year old son has been diagnosed with anklosing spondylitis. Is this information in your video pertinent to his autoimmunity as well?

Thanks for the explanation. I have a question: Is it only gluten or also oats, corn, rice, potato’s and other starchy foods that needs to be removed? (AIP)
@SaraPeternell
@SaraPeternell 3 года назад
It totally depends...If you are going AIP, yep, you will likely give up all of those. But, guess what - complex carbs are often really needed and important for those with Hashimoto's. They help with thyroid hormone production and conversion to the active T3. If you have lots of gut issues, then, AIP for a while to heal the gut and resolve food intolerances is a good choice. Also, oats are often cross contaminated with wheat - check this out: www.beyondceliac.org/gluten-free-diet/is-it-gluten-free/oats/

typically yes! you do not have to test "positive" for gluten intolerance on a test to have gluten be an issue for your thyroid...the video explains the molecular mimicry...and how the presence of gluten confuses the body...hope that helps!

Hello, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto this Friday on phone call... I didn't had chance to go to doctor yet because it's weekend. So I spend many hours on Internet looking for answers because i don't know what exactly is going on. I saw many articles that you have to give up gluten but also it could be dangerous. Is it? I dont know if I have or not intolerance to gluten but heard/read somewhere that if you go to gluten-free diet you could make intolerance to it... so i am comfused..
@SaraPeternell
@SaraPeternell 4 года назад
Hi there - if you have Hashimoto's you are likely already INTOLERANT to gluten, as I mention in the video. The connection with gluten and the thyroid starts with the digestive system and creating leaky gut. Thank you for watching - try outa GF diet and see how you feel! Take care.

I was just diagnosed with Hashi, and I had massive consumption of gluten in the last 2/3 years, I'm quite sure. Shall I try it? Or it won't solve my problem at all. The test I use in my office is the KBMO Diagnostics FIT test to understand a person's food intolerances along with the patterns and quantities of inflammatory foods - this usually gives a good idea of leaky gut. There are more advanced tests for complex digestive system cases too.
