Have you been MISREADING Jeremiah 29:11? The verse where God says,
"For I know the plans I have for you...plans to prosper you and not to harm you..."
Does that really mean what we think it does? That God won't let harm come to me? That God will prosper me?
I like the way that sounds. But what if that's not what it really says?
In this episode of Misreading Scripture, I'll help you see not only what Jeremiah 29:11 is REALLY saying, but why that's even more exciting than our traditional view.

Jeremiah was mistranslated by the theologians an scholars, they Just input what they like to hear, if you read Jeremiah in Hebrew and translate it to english it goes like this,Jeremiah 29:11,for i know the thoughts that i think towards you,says the Lord,thoughts of peace and not of evil ,to give you a future an a hope.

@@thesolution5697 King James Version (KJV 1769) - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. This appears very close to your translation. The Hebrew translation is: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Yähwè ,thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Not sure where you translated "a future and a hope." Achariyth means end or last. Now you have shalowm meaning "thoughts of peace." But shalowm also implies "welfare, health, prosperity, peace, quiet, tranquillity, contentment, etc." I love how one word can imply so many things. Thank you for your insight on the translation. I don't think I would have done my own research on this passage without. Makes me think about all the other passages I have read. Peace.

This shows that the Bible is the living word of the living God because it speaks to us in our situation. Even though I do appreciate and respect Brandon's explanation of the verse, I know that this verse has come up several times in my life to help me take very critical, decisive steps towards God's will. I never took it to mean I will always be successful in the worldly sense, but that even if the going is tough right now, God will see me through and I will be glad!

Exactly !! Agreed...well said...it is for us individually and collectly....as His children we have that assurance He will walk with us and prosperity does not mean just finances...soul prosperity...ect...He does have plans for us all as His Children...we will all live everlasting with our Father our Lord and Savior in Heaven but as individuals He grows us up in His Word. He blesses us with revelation knowledge of Him and His Word. He changes us from Glory to Glory. If that's not prosperity I don't know what is....God looks at the Heart...and by Faith in His Word He lifts us up and out of the mirky clay of life and places us on a solid foundation just when we need it....prosperity and His divine plans for us as individuals is a huge part of the Gospel...a personal relationship is at the heart of Jesus ministry...then and today...yes I have to disagree with this man's summaries...it is for us all and for YOU ..

@@ellendawz9664 Your both correct. What Brandon is teaching is 100 percent true, but what your saying is 100 percent true. To many Christians do look at the Bible wrong. Look for the answers they want when they want them, and they are foolish doing so, but that doesn't mean that God doesn't speak to us as individuals in each and every verse at the same time. Its a walk that is beautiful, but what Brandon is speaking of is so important. We must know context and apply it when we read the scripture. To many view the Bible as verses and ignore the situation the author is telling us about. I'm not saying a singular verse can't hit home for us, I'm just saying breaking the Bible down and ignore the whole is also wrong. There is truth is what everyone is saying. I just think I'd rethink saying he is wrong, he is not. Feeling God speak to you I'm a verse is beautiful, but ignoring the whole is also foolish. Have a beautiful day, God bless you 🙏

We’re all encountered by leader who stirs us to move ahead someone who believes we can do the task He has given and who will be with us all the way. God is that kind of leader. He knows the future and His plans for us are good and full of hope. As long as God, who knows our future, provides our agenda and goes with us as we fulfill His mission, we can have boundless hope. This does not mean we should spare pain, suffering, or hardship, but that God will see us to a glorious conclusion. God did not forget His future. Even though Israel was captive in Babylon, He planned to give them a new beginning with a new purpose - to turn them into new people. In times of deep trouble, it may appear that God has forgotten you, but God may be preparing you, as he did the people of Judah with a new beginning with Him in the center.

I'm perfectly fine with this translation of the text and it doesn't change how I feel about it or how it fits into my life at all. I have always lived by this one, "everything happens for a reason," "the Lord does not give us more than we can handle," and "this, too, shall pass." I've been homeless twice. I've lost my home in a fire. I was molested over a long period of time as a child. And now I've survived a bad car crash I easily could have died in that led to the discovery of a sizeable brain tumor which will be surgically removed in just two weeks. All of these things- and hundreds of other bad and difficult things I've been through over the last 40 years- have made me who I am today and brought me to the place in life I'm at today. Maybe the plan he has isn't about me, and maybe the reason these things have happened aren't to benefit me, but rather to bring me to where I need to be for someone else or to help something happen later down the line in God's plan for His people. I don't know, and maybe I'll never know, but I don't need to. He knows what He's doing and I'm just gonna go with it. I've survived it all this far. 🤷‍♀️

But things are already looking better towards that goal, as we've finally found the last key to get my blood sugar in range- apparently stress is a huge factor for me, and decreasing my stress load has unlocked my cells to let the insulin and sugar in to do their jobs. ❤️

No, it's not. Salvation is very personal. Psalms 23 is all about a personal relationship with the Lord, as is Psalms 91, "HE that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Psalms 1 started with "Blessed is the man that..." Psalms 112 starts with "Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that..." Paul told us to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." If you're trying to live a "kingdom life"... It starts with walking faithfully with Papa God and Jesus personally. Until you've got that to the place he's comfortable with using you at... You're just in the way. Paul was saved, baptized and filled with the Spirit in Damascus... But all he did was cause contention no differently than when he was arresting and condemning Christians to death before he met Jesus on the road to Damascus. Did you notice that the unrest that started with Paul's synagogue getting Stephen killed didn't end until Paul was sent from Jerusalem to Tarsus? (Acts 6:9-9:31) Life in Christ is an individual walk, not a corporate one. It's only when we're walking as sacrificed to him personally that we can be used prosperously with others to spread the truth of his kingdom.

My mother died when I was 6. When she lived we went to church every Sunday, and had bible study at least once a week. When she died that all ended. I am the youngest of 6, and we were 19, 17, 15, 13, 10 and 6 at her death. By the time I was 7 my dad had thrown out everyone but me and my brother who was 4 years older than me. My dad also would disappear for weeks at a time leaving my brother and I to fend for ourselves food and all. By 8 I ended up in foster care for 6 weeks by myself. I was sexually molested there. When my dad got me back we moved across the country to be with his sister and brother. My brother and I were basically dumped off at his sisters there. I turned 9 on the trip. In that house I was molested, beat, and made to feel worthless. We lived there for 4 years. One night when I was about 10, I took a knife and was going to kill myself. My mother showed up in a big ball if pure light and told me the words of Jeremiah... except at the time I didnt know they were from Jeremiah. It stopped me. From then on I started reading the bible.

Wrong! So many take verses out of the real meaning, isolate it, then place it on an island and place our own meaning into many Scriptures. I hear this from so many "group leaders" to the point that it "excites" listeners. Jeremiah 29:11, these people were rebellious and God was sending them or has sent many to captivity as punishment for their consequences. The KJV reads differently. I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. This sounds much different from the NIV that people love so much. Davis said that His thoughts for him outnumber the sands on the shore. Imagine that. Also, so many love the prosperity that the minority texts used in translation. It means God wants His people to return to the old way, which was better than their current walk. Read the whole chapters in context and understand why it was said. Jeremiah 29-33 was a prophetic word and warning for a people, not an individual.

Yes, of course He does with me. The problem is, most people are not in tune with Him, like a radio tuner off the correct frequency but expecting and hoping to hear the right broadcast. And there are those who do not want to hear what He has to say, and could not care less because their hearts and minds have been hardened by sin. They are too busy living "the good life" worshiping their false gods. That is why Christ always said "He (whoever) who has ears to hear, let him (them) hear" What He says to you will ALWAYS be in agreement with His written Word, the Bible. That is how we avoid deception from the enemy. The more we know His word and submit by faith, to His authority in our lives, the more clearly we will discern His voice! I agree with you both, (Harriet and Tawachi). If we are to believe that context is everything in the Bible, which it is, then everything spoken in all the Bible verses and who they were spoken to, have already passed and doesn't affect us, and we are all out of luck. (But we know that that isn't true. Enter rhema.) Jer 29:11 might have been spoken to the captives in Babylon, but aren't we all, metaphorically and by extension, captive in Babylon before we are saved. Isn't each individual a part of the whole. However, I think what Brandon is trying to say is, we should all get our eyes off of ourselves and focus on others, but like you were saying, the difference between Logos and Rhema. In my early years of Christianity, I relied on Jer 29:11 to build my faith. I pray that my rambling makes sense. Brandon is a great teacher and I am a new subscriber. Then he proceeded to teach and preach “tithing” which takes verses in Malachi wildly out of context!! Maybe this clears up the question of “tithing” which as taught in modern churches is taken egregiously out of context and used as a cudgel!! Perhaps the answer is that those infamous Malachi verses are a Rhema for some and not for others. I know I personally have wrestled with it for a very long time and read hundreds of articles on the subject. If you don’t have a Rhema on it, then you are wasting your time trying to apply the verse.

I agree with Pauline. We dont study the bible to only understand its context we study bible to receive and apply the word of God daily in our lives. The bible gives us more than 3800 promises and 365 times in the bible god tells us not to fear, for i your God am with you. If you study scripture keeping time frames and events in mind it would be incorrect, we are Christians followers of Christ because the scriptures are beyond time and space, just likeour God is beyond time and space. If we interpret verses to be applicable to only that time frame, then we are being totally misled. Its becoz the scriptures have the power to work miracles in our life through the eveliving word of God we are living our faith in Christ. We still are in dark times under the Babylonian kingship of satan and we are still surrounded by pagan worship of modernism and new age. And hence the promise of jeremiah 29:11 is still applicable to us coz it gives us hope that our God will deliver us and fulfill the promise of a new Jerusalem as promised in revelations .

There is a balance needed. It is correct to both understand scripture in its time frame and context so we dont misappropriate it. Yet we also must know the Holy Spirit can and will breathe His word on us in new appliations. God Himself brought me uderstanding of this verse IN CONTEXT specifically during a horrible time in life for me to understand that punishment and trauma still comes, but GOD'S thoughts are pure toward us. He may still punish us, but if we yield to that punishment while understanding He only corrects those He LOVES, and understanding His thoughts are to bring us to a spiritually prosperous place. Hope that makes sense and helps someone.

Many times in scripture the New Testament quotes scripture from the Old Testament to encourage and claim it for now! As a declaration of what has gone before will yet be again. This is completely proper and scriptural to do so, much like prophecy. As God’s beloved people we can claim his protection, his hand of blessing and sovereignty over the plans of our lives. We have faith to believe for this and this pleases God. Scripture is a tool, Jesus used it as a weapon when confronted by the devil. Jesus didn’t take it out of context by doing so but used for that moment. Jeremiah 29:11 is a weapon against the devils lies of hopelessness, stagnancy and defeat. If you never want to use it. That’s up to you!

I really appreciated this video. It gave me peace about something that I have really struggled with. I've been a Christian for more than 40 years, and watched someone who was perhaps the strongest, most faith filled, most devout, most loving Christian I've ever met, get dementia and spend the last years of their life confused, terrified, crying, and basically stuck in a living nightmare that made no sense to them. This weighed on my heart very heavily, and when I would share my sadness with other believers, some would quote Jeremiah 29:11 to me. I know their intention was good, but it really drove a wedge in my spiritual life. What my loved one was going through did not in any way appear to me to be part of "God's plan" or "God's protection" for a follower in Christ who spent so much of their life loving and serving Him. I know we don't understand all that God does in situations like this, and perhaps genuine good did somehow come from what happened, and I don't want to debate that. My point is that if I'm being completely honest, when people would quote this verse out of context to me (in the midst of my pain,) the verse felt like a lie to me, and gave me more pain than comfort. I felt that if I couldn't trust what (I thought) this verse was saying, how could I trust others verses? However, It didn't cause me to stop believing in God, because I had seen God answer so many prayers in my life, but it did make it very difficult to read the Bible each day, and believe and trust in some of the scriptures. Hearing you better explain the context of this verse definitely helped me have more peace in this area. Thank you so much.

Yes, He is at work to bring about the good that He intends for us. Oftentimes, though, we don't know what that is and we may not see it until 10-20 years later. And, it does not mean that all these negative things bring joy to our lives. Quite often, there is much pain in the process. That is why a growing trust in Him will enable us to choose to remain steadfast in our walk with Him!

First I’m reminded that ALL the promises of God are “Yes” and n Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:20)… Often times when I ask someone to define prosperity, answer has to do with money, profit and material wealth… But prosperity can also mean, prosperous in spirit, in relationships and in other non-material, non-monetary things… I do maintain a biblical hope, a confident expectation of a good outcome, and I am convinced that through my salvation and Christian growth God will execute is perfect plan for my life…

Looking forward to hearing this teaching. Often people immediately apply a scripture to themselves without seeing the scripture in the context of who it was written to. Most of the Bible is written to Israel. Since Jesus first had a mission to the Jewish people then after his death and Resurrection he gave the great commission and taught to preaching the good news to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth (all nations). Paul taught to preach to the Jew first and also to the Gentile, and finally that Gentiles have been grafted in, then one can see God's heart for all nations. It is meant to be one family but to honor Israel first as the Chosen Nation to reach all nations.

@JetADR
@JetADR 2 года назад
I hear what you are saying @Shann Ruggles and I agree that in Romans 1:16 it literally says to the Jew First and also to the Greek, but if you read John 3:16, 2 Pt 3:9, Isaiah 56:6-7, it is clear God's heart is not just for the Greeks. Jesus's Great Commission states to Go from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth. The regions could also be considered the people groups you find there, Jerusalem maybe the more religious, Judea is the rest of Israel, Samaria could be the people groups related to Israel like the Arabs and Samaritans (partial Jews/Syrian etc), and the ends of the earth is everyone in between. Apologies for not quoting Romans perfectly in my first post.

Lastly, going back to the writings of Moses, many things like the Passover and other commandments say things that apply to the Foreigner and the stranger within your gates which refers to the Gentiles or anyone non-Israel. In the Hebrew Text you have 'goy' meaning nation referring to Israel and 'goyim' (plural) for all the Other Nations around the One Nation Israel

If God is not making himself increase in each and every individual then how can he make the corporate Body of Christ increase? You cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater what is true of one is true of all The Same Spirit that saves you is the same spirit that saves me God is working in each of us individually as well as corporately and without the individual there is no corporate because the corporate body is made up of individual believers it's not rocket science it's obvious.

Jeremiah 1:5, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Was this an indication of how God uniquely treated Jeremiah, or was He saying that this was a principle applied to all? If the words of the Old Testament were intended to only apply to the Jews and to the unique individuals (if identified) in the passage of scripture, then why did Jesus constantly refer to the Old Testament? Why did Jesus say, "search the (Old Testament) scriptures ...."? Much of the lessons learned regarding the children of Israel (Jews) apply to believers today. If that were not true, then there would be little reason to read the Old Testament - except for its historical value. Perhaps it is an error to limit the intent of Jeremiah 29:11. God is timeless. He knows full well what was the context of this passage; yet He saw fit to include it as "God breathed scripture" for a thousand following generations to be instructed, reproved, corrected, and trained in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16).

God does have plans for us and does not want harm for us. He wants a beautiful eternity for all of us. Sometimes it will suck here, not just because of our sins and choices, but often because of other people's sins and choices. We are often victims in a fallen world. Sometimes that is the only experience we have before going into eternity. Ie. Sick, murdered, or aborted children.

" You see, this was written to the Jews. This was to the Romans, this was to someone else (not us/not you) - and there is nothing left of any spesific meaning for anyone in the here and now... Dispensationalism is some scary one way street...
@FeetMusical
@FeetMusical 2 года назад
@@Christ.lives.7 Dispensationalism is a way to explain God's varied and targeted interaction with man and His expectations of mankind. We are in the "age of grace" - meaning that salvation is purely by the grace of God through faith. Moses was in the age or dispensation of law. Noah transitioned from the age of conscience to that of human government. During the seven year tribulation will be a dispensation of wrath, to be followed by the Kingdom with Jesus directly ruling. But in all of these dispensations, redemption or justification was/is through faith, as stated in Hebrews 11. And all of these dispensations, collectively, have a very important point - that mankind, under all circumstances, cannot save himself. No one, at his/her judgment, will be able to claim that Satan "made" them sin and therefore are not responsible for their behavior. That will be demonstrably shown to be false during the millennium reign of Christ. But in all of what has been written in God's word, the only passages that may be dismissed - i.e., not relevant today or in the future - are those completely and specifically related to the closed out dispensation. What comes to mind are the animal sacrifices and the New Testament specifically states their irrelevance today. That having been said, Jeremiah 29:11 cannot be deemed as invalid just because it was rendered during the dispensation of the law. God certainly has plans for the future, a lot of them, for Christians today. Perhaps "prosperity" is by definition. God's plans result in prospering in the kingdom. Jesus, transplanted the "treasures" to be the rewards in Heaven. So as a fundamental rule in God's mind, He continues to have plans, for prosperity, and He intercedes to obviate harm in terms of health - but all as that benefits the gospel and the Kingdom. Some Christians, at God's will, sacrificed unto their deaths. Perhaps the perspective is changed and the meaning in the dispensation of grace, but the level of God's interest and involvement in our lives is not less, and perhaps more that the Israelites and the Jews, pre-Jesus' crucifixion.

I always interpreted more along the lines of being a good companion text of Romans 8:28 which says And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Not all things are good but God knows what good and bad things are necessary for each person to grow their Faith and grow their relationship with Christ i agree that he's talking about the entirety of Israel as a surface level reading but I feel there's also a deeper application that this dosen't account for. (Even if it is historical accurate)

I like the King James Version that says an expected end. He knows what I am going to go through and it does not surprise Him. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” God is thinking of me when He allows things to happen or not allow things to happen. God will never forget about me.

If this verse does not apply to the people of God, but to a specific person only, then we must treat all verses as ones not applying to any future Christians, and the Bible becomes dead. But God's word is a living water that quenches the thirst of whoever believes on Him. Poison.

I will not replace one meaning for the other but simply an added lens to look through because He has a plan for each of us and in the end my purpose will still benefit the kingdom.

Great lesson. Spot on ! In context, that passage was intended for the Israelites headed to their exile in Babylon. As you mentioned, Jer 29:4-7 is especially important to understanding Jer 29:11. As the Al-Yahudu Tablets would attest, Yehovah was true to His Word: the Israelites did indeed grow and prosper during the Babylonian Exile so much so that many (if not the majority) of Israelites stayed in Babylon and did not return to The Land. Mordechai and Esther were part of the descendants of the Israelite Exiles who remained in Babylon. The Babylonian Talmud would be written in Babylon a thousand years after the Exile between 500-700 AD. The last of the descendants of the Israelite Exiles did not return to The Land from Babylon until 1954. That said, yes, Yehovah absolutely cares about us as individuals. Thank you, Brandon. Berachot,

Excellent exegesis and analysis: you touch on a very important distinction between modern individualistic culture vis à vis Judaic culture, which emphasises family ties, home life, human emotions and tribal identity and genealogy. My mum was Jewish, so, by the laws of Halacha, I count as a Jew, although both my parents were vehement atheists and I had a typical secular upbringing and education. My upbringing inculcated me with the materialist, rationalist values of the consumer society. Following some life-changing events and traumas in my 40s, I became religious and chose to rejoin my mother’s Jewish faith and people. Their tribal, collectivist ethic and culture struck me very forcibly as it seems to connect back through time to an earlier, pre-urban era of human history.
