You've probably seen footage and images of the January 6 riot at the Capitol captured by today's guest, videographer Ford Fischer. A decade ago, Fischer cofounded New2Share, a radical experiment in decentralized video journalism. He and his colleagues gather long-form footage from all sorts of breaking news events, including protests organized by radicals across the political spectrum. They upload it to RU-vid and elsewhere, and then let viewers draw their own conclusions. His coverage has been licensed worldwide and appears regularly on networks ranging from CNN to Fox News to NBC. Fischer's RU-vid and Facebook channels routinely get demonetized and in other sorts of trouble because of the controversial nature of his work. Reason's Nick Gillespie talked with him about why he started News2Share, what he hopes to accomplish by offering something truly unique in an age of 24/7 news coverage, and how his training as a Reason intern informs his worldview.

At no point did police wave people in on Jan 6th. I've seen footage of them doing that and walking people around and opening doors for them. One defendant's case was dismissed when footage of a cop waving him in was found. How can you say that this did not happen?
@chrimony

Indeed. Just because Fischer didn't record, doesn't mean it didn't happen. He surely must have seen this online, those clips went viral.

3::18- you have to have discretion when you cover something . What does that mean?

Who are Ford Fischer's customers? How can their preferences not affect his editorial decisions on what to cover, not cover, and how to cover?

As long as interesting events can be spun multiple ways, primary documentarians will have diverse customers, so I think we can be hopeful

I'll never understand why the public has expectations that the media will be honest. Ever. Why on earth would you think that? They make money. That's the purpose of the entire industry. It's not a trivial detail. Sure, they SAY they're being honest but if that's what convinced you, you're hopeless. Don't watch these corporations broadcasts. You will be disappointed every time. It's not surprising, it's not some clever discovery that you have made, it's the very nature of their business. It always has been.

In the videos shown on this episode I see a lot of relatively close up shots of a speaker with a few others around him. Isn't it important to also get wide shots that contain the entire event? Also, I don't see many or any women at these events. Why aren't there women protesting the lack of female inclusivity in these "extreme" events?

Don't these public protesters and demonstrators that Ford Fischer documents depend on people like him to publicize their messages? As much as he is a freelance documentarian, isn't he equally a freelance propagandist?
@ThePersephoneK
@ThePersephoneK Месяц назад
Then all journalists are propagandists by that definition. As he said, the events happen whether or not he's there.
@pwhqngl0evzeg7z37
@pwhqngl0evzeg7z37 Месяц назад
Certainly not equally a propagandist, as he captures people at their ugliest as well as their most charismatic. And I think here too nature abhors a vacuum: if pundits lose him as their publisher, others will take his place. Perhaps their following won't be as great, but I doubt this potentially decreased visibility is a good tradeoff.

@@pwhqngl0evzeg7z37 My point remains, that his coverage depends on his editorial decisions, which depend on getting paid, which depends on clients paying him. Not knowing who his clients are, you don't know whose agenda he is satisfying.

@@glennmitchell9107 Personally I find it hard to believe that political figures pay him to cover their speeches and rallies. If they actually want that coverage their followers will do it for free.
