Using an expression pedal with your delay is a great way to explore unique sounds or to make your delay pedal more versatile and easier to switch between all of it’s different settings.
I used a Boss DD-8 Digital Delay and Boss EV-30 expression pedal for this but you can use whatever you want. Just make sure that your delay pedal has an expression pedal input and it's best if your expression pedal has a minimum control on it.
Here's a list of some delay pedals with expression pedal inputs -
Boss DD-8 - amzn.to/3taydhU
Boss DD-7
Boss DD-200 - amzn.to/3nB8HRF
Boss RE-20 - amzn.to/3xDoTqo
DigiTech JamMan Delay
DigiTech TimeBender
electro-harmonix 1100TT - amzn.to/3aRyqA6
electro-harmonix 550TT - amzn.to/3eFGCVy
electro-harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy - amzn.to/3aT4HXH
electro-harmonix Memory Boy - amzn.to/3t5Q3CS
TC Electronics Flashback x4 Delay - amzn.to/3t8EkTX
Eventide TimeFactor
Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler
Vox DelayLab
Pigtronix Echolution
Here's some good expression pedals -
Boss EV-30 - amzn.to/3t5QxZI
Electro-Harmonix Single Expression Pedal - amzn.to/3xKokez
Electro-Harmonix Dual Expression Pedal - amzn.to/3e7tMAa
Boss FV-500H - amzn.to/3vpYNVM

00:25 - Two Mode Delay Using Effect Level Control
01:31 - Tremolo / Interrupted Delay
02:32 - Three Mode Delay using Feedback Control
04:09 - Rhythmic / Sampler Effects
05:06 - Three Mode Delay using Delay Time Control
06:01 - 'Wobbly' Delay
06:58 - Controlling Self Oscillation
Tip One
Easily switch between two preset delay volumes, mid song, mid jam whenever you want without having to get down to adjust the pedal to find your other setting. Subtle, low volume delay with your heel back, loud and intense delay with your toe forward on the expression pedal.
Tip Two
With the expression pedal controlling the full range of the effect level control try ‘pumping’ the expression pedal. You could do it in time to the music, it’s a bit like having a tremolo effect applied just to the delay signal. If you play chord stabs you’ll get a glitchy sounding choppy delay signal.
Tip Three
This is how to get a kind of three mode delay pedal. With the expression pedal controlling the feedback control, set the toe forward position, the maximum amount of feedback to just before the delay pedal starts to self oscillate and feedback on itself. Then set the heel back position, the minimum amount of feedback all the way to the left, to zero. This way, you can have a 50s slap back at heel position, an ambient delay around the middle position and big long spacey echo at the tip position.
Tip Four
With the expression pedal controlling the feedback time / amount of repeats, you can get really interesting choppy, sampler type rhythmic effects by setting E. Level to the same volume as the original signal, the delay time to 16th or 8th note and then using the expression pedal to switch from one repeat to more than one repeat of a staccato note or chord.
Tip Five
This is another three mode option you might find useful. With the expression pedal controlling the delay time, set a reverb type delay time at heel and a big long echo at tip of foot, the in-between position can be used for medium ambient echo.
Tip Six
For some weird and wobbly sounds use the expression pedal to control the full range of the delay time and also the feeback control but it’s maximum set to just before it self oscillates and slowly move the exp pedal as you play. This works well with a more narrow range setting on the expression pedal as well but this can just be done by being selective with how far you travel on the treadle too.
Tip Seven
Setting the feedback quite high so that the pedal is just starting to self oscillate, use the expression pedal to control the speed and pitch of the oscillation.

Great idea! I've always thought about using the expression pedal to control parameters like flanger resonance or chorus rate (I think it can be done in a Boss GT-100). I've got to try this too
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 3 года назад
Go for it! I find with modulation like chorus, phasers and flangers that my favourite parameter to control with the expression pedal is often the rate, similar to a treadle controlled uni-vibe. But if it's programmable to any combination of parameters the possibilities are almost endless. Have fun!

you have to hold down your dd8 while plugging in the expression pedal. the light will turn orange and you can now set your maximum parameters. if you dont want a parameter to be affected (for example volume/level) you simply turn it all the way down. when you now chose your maximum/toe down position you press the dd8 footswitch and set your parameters.

Hi! Thanks so much for the awesome video. I have a query: Im setting up my expression so that toes down it increases the volume and feedback of the delay. However, when i transition from toe up to to down on the expression, it produces the weird wobbly sound you get when you change the tempo in the delay. How can i get rid of it?

Great with my Collider…I usually use wet/dry. But feedback is cool, but for delays minimum needs to be set above or high below….otherwise it gets too wild!
@coreyclark6505
@coreyclark6505 7 месяцев назад
I've actually been on the fence about getting an expression pedal to use with the Collider. I understand it can control up to 3 parameters. Can you basically choose any 3 or is it limited in any particular way?
@mattg082
@mattg082 7 месяцев назад
@@coreyclark6505 yep you can…easy way to try is to hook it up to a computer.. select presets and in those presets there is a drop down for 3 control settings. You can have them automate all at once or just feedback, wet dry or whatever. You can do it on your own patches…but the presets are an easy way to get started as it’s all layed out. Once you do it, just hold the save button on the pedal. It doesn’t unlock it for all of them. So you can save each preset with whichever 3 expressions you want. It’s good for the modulation stuff, or doing a wet dry blend to create ambient feedback…def worth the small amount to spend on an expression. I also use one with my RE20!

How do you change the delay time on dd7 with ev 30? Mine only changes the volume but not the delay time.
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 3 года назад
Here goes: Make sure the pedal isn't in loop/hold mode. Press and hold down the pedal switch on the DD7 while connecting the expression pedal. The check indicator should light orange and you can release the switch. Turn the E.Level, F.Back, and D.Time knobs to set the maximum values of the ranges you want to control. If you don’t want to control a particular parameter with the expression pedal, set its value to the “min” position. Press the switch on the DD7 to save those settings and the pedal will be setup for you to use. Hope that helps.

@just.off.the.a4208

I noticed around the 3.30 minute mark, when you played soft, it sounded as if there was only 1 repeat, but when strumming harder the more delay/repeat kicks in. But I didn't notice your foot changing the level on the expression pedal. How did you achieve this "touch sensitivity"?
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 2 года назад
I think it's just because when I'm playing softly and more legato those later repeats become inaudible because they're so quiet. You can only really hear the later repeats if I really hit a loud staccato chord and then the later repeats suddenly become more obvious. It's a playing thing rather than an effects setting thing. I hope that helps anyway.

How do you set up just the delay time for boss dd7 with boss ev 30?
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 3 года назад
I think I've already replied to a similar message but here it is for the EV30 to just control delay time: Make sure the pedal isn't in loop/hold mode. Press and hold down the pedal switch on the DD7 while connecting the expression pedal. The check indicator should light orange and you can release the switch. Turn the E.Level, F.Back all the way down and D.Time up to the maximum delay time that you'll want. Press the switch on the DD7 to save those settings and the pedal will be setup to control the delay time. Hope that helps.

@@MichaelBanfieldGuitar faster delay time with less time between repeats
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar

Thanks. Unfortunately, you can't configure the expression pedal to move one knob up while controlling another to simultaneously go down so it isn't possible on the DD-8. Some delay pedals have the time control work in the opposite direction (Boss DM-2 does this) so it's not always the case. Hope that helps

@@MichaelBanfieldGuitar and that could be done with the toneprint app in the flashback 2?
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar
@MichaelBanfieldGuitar 3 года назад
@@emilianoibarra3537 Yes it can definitely be done on the Flashback 2. The mash switch on the Flashback 2 is actually set up to behave like that by default on a lot of the settings actually, definitely the tape setting I can't remember about the others though. It will send the delay into swirly self oscillating goodness. In fact that reminds me there is a way you can get that same self oscillating effect from the DD-8! If you connect a dual footswitch like the Boss FS-7 to the DD-8 when you press and hold switch A it will send it into self oscillation in basically the same way the mash switch on the Flashback 2 does. I'm planning on making a video about using a dual footswitch with the DD-8 soon so keep a look out for it.
