We're spending the day in Chester, England and wow, there are so many incredible things to do in Chester! We check out the Chester Rows, take a scenic boat tour on The River Dee, visit the Roman amphitheatre, walk the city walls, find an unexpected surprise in church ruins, and so much more. We had such a wonderful day here in Chester and tried to see and do as much as we could, but if we missed anything, be sure to leave us a comment and let us know! We'd love to check out more of Chester on a future trip.

Isn't it amazing how different York and Chester are....both started as Roman Legionary fortresses, both developed as Viking ports on rivers connecting to the sea, and both retaining their city walls. They should be identical, but they are nothing alike.

We lived in North Wales, in the 80's- mid 90's, so Chester was our big Shopping venue. It's great and I love the Cathedral, in particular. We left to live in York. THAT is such a stunning place, way more lovely than Chester, with the Minster, Shambles, and many historic buildings and Churches.( in my personal opinion ) We loved it there. Then we emigrated and have lived in 3 Countries since. We do plan to visit York again, next year, and I'm so excited. It's not to be missed.!! If you must choose between one City or the other, I'd recommend York. Sorry Chester!!

By the way, the Welsh name for Chester is Caer, which means a Roman fort town. So in Wales you have other places that had Roman forts such as Caernarfon and Caergybi. The English name for Caergybi is Holyhead. It has surviving Roman fort with a medieval church built inside the walls. The church is named after St Cybi, a 6th century saint who established a monastery there and was one of the saints that spread Christianity through Wales.

I’ve been visiting Chester ever since I can remember. As a young person I lived a short drive away, and even when I lived further off, I often visited relatives who lived nearby. Now I live fairly close and visit it just for a ‘day out’. There’s so much history there, it’s a real experience. The ‘rows’ (that’s what they call the two tiers of shops) are great in wet weather - you can wander round the shops & not get wet. Glad you liked it. If you get the chance, visit the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London. It’s a spectacular place. It was built in 1696. I used to work there sometimes & took some American visitors round on one occasion - they asked when it was built & I told them. Their leader turned to the others in the party and said - “this was built before we were a country!” We in the UK forget our history sometimes. There’s a castle in walking distance from where I live that was built in 1295. It’s still someone’s home, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. The local church was built in 1163. We’re surrounded by ancient history!

This made me so homesick. From my classroom when I was 12 (and again at 14) I could see the dentists building, not sure if it was a dentist then - 52 years ago, and the inscription 'the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,' is burnt into my brain from the hours I spent staring out of the window watching the tourists. From the next classroom I was in, from age 13 and then again from 15-16, we looked out over where they were working in the amphitheatre. It's amazing I ever learned anything. We used to do our cross country run past St John's church and in and around Grosvenor Park. I remember There used to be lots of swans on the river so we always took bread to feed them and I remember a brass band playing in the bandstand in the Groves. The city has changed a lot since then. Thank you for taking me back.

I'm a member of Chester Archaeological Society and participated in some of the more recent excavations of the amphitheatre. It was built as an amphitheatre and used for executions, beast hunts and gladiatorial combats, but appears to have fallen into disuse and became a city dump for a while. In Anglo-Saxon times it may have been turned into a fortification, like the Amphitheatre at Arles in France, by Aethelflaed daughter of Alfred the Great and Lady (Queen) of Mercia.

such a great project to be involved in - as a cestrian i have loved walking round the amphitheatre since i was a kid. We used to play in there when i was really small, and now it's so great that it has been protected and has more information around the site about it. i remember the arguments a some years ago about the buildings and car park covering the other half of the site - it would have been really nice to have got underneath them but i guess it was never going to happen.

(I'm lucky to live less than an hour away). Last time I went into the cathedral they had on display part of an original handwritten manuscript by the 18th. century composer Handel. He was waiting for a boat to Dublin, to conduct the first ever performance of 'Messiah' (Liverpool didn't really exist then and Chester was the main port for Irish crossings. He was still doing last minute rewrites whilst travelling) Chester has a great zoo btw.

I'm from Massachusetts and our 8th grade school trip was a visit to Boston to walk The Freedom Trail. It took us to Paul Revere's house, Boston Harbor, Faneuil Hall, the graveyard where so many involved in getting the Revolution started are buried. We had read Johnny Tremain which is a story about a fictional boy who was a silversmith apprentice and watches the whole thing get planned and eventually gets involved himself. And seeing all of those places in the book and knowing that they're real and a big part of history was really awesome. I was that nerdy girl on the trip thoroughly engrossed and in awe of it all. Loved every moment.

I have lived in Chester since I was 7 years old, I’ve always loved it here. I used to work in town, just up the road from the Amphitheatre, and in the summer months I always took a packed lunch to work with me, and on my lunch hour I used to sit and eat it there in the amphitheatre and enjoy watching the everyone fascinated by it 👍

Cestrian born as I am, it pleases me greatly to see you profiling the city! It has grown and developed in many ways since I grew up there, but there's much about it that has never essentially changed. Your vlog captures that, I feel!

First of all I love your videos, they're very entertaining and homely. To answer your question @ 4:08 the best school trip I went on was to Colchester Castle in Colchester, Essex. It's a Roman built castle that was rebuilt by William the Conquer and the Normans in 1076. If you haven't visited Colchester yet you definitely should. Colchester Castle is now a museum and it's one of the best museums I've ever visited. Very fun visit if you're interested in Roman history of England

I don’t know if someone already said that the elongated letter in the Dufy to Duft sign is actually an elongated S. $o it is saying Dust not Duff. I think you can find the same kind of thing on other letters from old English. I think it’s been a long time since I read about it. Glad you are having a good time. X

so bizarre that i came across your M&S food video and it was in chester! born and raised in chester, i even used to go to the dentist you found. and i spent quite some time in the albion pub over the years, it liked to cultivate an almosphere of being unfriendly but that was just to scare off big stag or hen parties etc, they just wanted to keep it quite and comfortable. chester has so many little quirks and curiosities you forget how great it is when you live there. the "roman remains" advertised in the shop are a roman mosaic that they found under the store room floor, now under a glass panel i think. there are loads of little things around like that. i always find it odd that so many people are amazed by the chester rows, to me that its just normal to have two rows of shops, but then i realise you don't see it anywhere else!

my most memorable school trip in the 80s, i was around 10. On a week long trip , we went for a walk in the country, South West England, around 5 kids, and our headmaster. i started to feel ill , so my headmaster had to carry me on my shoulders, we started to get lost, but i somehow was good at navigation and delegated the map kid. that wasn't the problem, the problem was we started to notice spent bullet casing's all across the ground. Somehow we had managed to walk into the British Army's largest training ground, where they regularly do live fire exercises with tanks, artillery. Somehow as a 10 year old , being carried ,while lost we managed to get out without being hit by an Artillery Shell

School trips I remember: We went to a medieval house when I was 10 and we all, including the teachers had to go dressed in medieval costumes. We learned to spin wool and make Christmas decorations with oranges and cloves. We had to take it in turns turning the pig on the spit over the fire and then it was carried in whole to the dining hall. Also in primary school it is traditional in lots of British schools to go on retreat the last year at a school so went to Kettlewell and went rock climbing and caving. In high school we went to Stratford to see a Shakespeare play obviously (Antony and Cleopatra). We went to St Malo, France, to practise our bad school French. We did a geography field trip to visit limestone paving in the Yorkshire Dales near Malham. We took a history trip to North Wales. We also did a couple of retreats with rope courses and trust building team activities. For perspective, I went to a very typical school with mainly working class intake in northern England. Schools in better areas may have done more exciting things but I loved our trips.

I mean I was in awe, like how did I never notice this or that before? In Spain now and have not been back home since 2019. Seeing this video really made my day. I have to come home soon.
