A24's latest film, "Everything Everywhere All At Once" is one of the best movies of 2022 thus far. Directed by the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) and starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, and Jaime Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All At Once follows a Chinese immigrant family that owns a failing laundromat and whose family bond is fractured and facing an IRS audit. While at the IRS office, the family is rocketed onto a surreal odyssey that spans the length of the infinite multiverse.
In this video, I review Everything Everywhere All At Once, discuss why I think the A24 flick is important and finally I give a crack at what I think the film's deeper meaning is.

That was one of my favorite lines in the movie, but the line is even more poignant and humorously delivered in its original Chinese. I would translate the line like this: "If there is a hereafter, I would still want to be with you... doing taxes... and opening a laudry shop."

I never caught the reference of the googlie eyes as an inversion of the donut! That's such a good point and really fits with them symbolizing Waymon's perspective, they're literally eyes that can't see, but for what they are, they're a source of happiness

Made sense why there are an abundant references to circles- the opening shot of the mirror, the laundry machine, the bagel, googly eyes, and the circle drawn on the tax receipt. Things that are on focus, and things that are outside of focus. Such brilliant way of framing a story but so subtly!

Seeing this yesterday made me feel every emotion. Not only because it was a visual, technical, comedic, ambitious, dramatic and unique piece of art where some scenes made me feel like my brain was melting, but because after 15 YEARS of endless Superhero Movies, and Sequels, Remakes, Reboots, Sequel-Reboots, etc, to see this was pure distilled cinematic creativity overload and I have been begging for every day. There should be 12 movies like this a year. Please hollywood, take risks, try new things, new art, new stories, please take a chance. I don't care if 10 different VFX departments made the CGI for Doctor Strange. A rock with googly eyes on it gave me more and made me meditate on the nature of my own existence! ⭐💖🌈🤯

I totally get what you mean with the fast paced exposition dumps. They could have taken the three times they did it and meshed them into a longer one. It would have helped a lot of others catch on like they’re supposed to. Other than that though, this movie is absolutely amazing. This was an award winning film even before the first whiff of science fiction presented itself. The first 20 minutes of this movie will remain my favourite but not to detract from the crazyness that ensued the beginning was so emotionally engaging with the relationship between the family especially from Hsu who played the daughter. She kinda stole the movie for me even though Yeoh was also phenomenal a small part of me wanted to see that movie unfold over the one presented.

Good advice to watch it twice. The first watch through I was honestly lost and overwhelmed. Not only did I have to wrestle with some of the logic (which I tried to suppress my tendency to), there are just so much crammed into this film. Also, because so much of the movie doesn’t adhere to movie cliches and shorthand I had to readjust to it and it distracted from what the story is trying to convey. But the second watch through I started to see its structure and able to get more out of each character arcs. I must say I really like it a lot more after rewatching it.

This move blew Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness out of the water and showed Marvel how to do it right and with a 20 million dollar budget too! Marvel follows the formula for making movies, check all the checkboxes and have a huge budget. Not saying Marvel is bad, they have been very successful but this movie makes theirs come up short.

That's what I'm saying! Of the multiverse movies that came out recently, this is a far superior one. 10/10 movie.

This really doesn't have anything to do with Doctor Strange MVM. You people are too fixated on the plot point that they both use multiverses. Really the theme is a lot closer to the first Doctor Strange film. Both having arcs about overcoming nillisim. In the vastness of the universe "this" moment matters because it's meaningful to the people in it.

I went to watch this movie with my friend. I enjoy it a lot and really like to rewatch it, but my friend doesn't seems to enjoy it as much as I do and seems a little confused.

I’m disappointed in myself for not noticing the googly eye as an inversion of the bagel. Great observation.

The titles says it all: Everything Everywhere All At Once. I love SWISS ARMY MAN and this one was also great, kicked Marvel in the fanny.

Just realising how a lot of people don't really know much about Michelle Yeoh or don't recognise her before this movie which is wild because she's been doing movies for decades and has been in some of the best movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

It feels like a Jackie Chan movie (I don't know how to explain it, maybe another way would be a western wuxia film?) but also like a sci-fi movie but also like a drama, but also it feels like a fantasy at times. I love this.

Was originally going to star Jackie Chan as the main character, before they switched it to being Evelyn's story

Take a chance and take a leap of faith into the unknown. U might succeed or fail. But u will have no regret. I saw this movie Wed nite at Stonetown Galleria in SF. I was expecting no more than 10 ppl because this movie only had two showtimes: 6:45pm and 10:30pm. In contrast, Dr Strange had two screens and multiple showtimes. To my surprise, at least 50 ppl showed up for this movie. Mostly kids in their early 20's. Near the end, everybody in theater could not stop crying. The sound of constant sniffling can be heard throu out the theater. LMAO. I haven't felt so good in theater for a long time.

Spoilers! I think when Joy was going to leave the family, she wasn't going to just drive away, but actually end her life. In the rock universe we can even see her dying and Evelyn, unwilling to live in a universe without her, joining her. And this is what makes Everything Everywhere all at once one of my all time favorites. It manages to combine some of the best comedy in years, with an incredible nuanced and honest display of depression and self-destruction. This year I've seen: The Batman, 2001: A space odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia in Cinemas - and despite them all being incredible Masterpieces, nothing hit me harder than Everything Everywhere all at once did.

I loved this movie… My only complaint about this movie is the dildos and butt plugs. Do they bother me? No. So, what’s the complaint? I would love some family members to see this, but some of them, especially older ones will see that as gross, and honestly, they’re right. This is a REALLY deep movie, with a great story and a great message. If it was TED, SuperBad, or Pineapple Express, dildos and butt plugs are a perfect fit (no pun intended), but they don’t fit at all in this movie about a family. Hot dog fingers, fanny pack weapons, glitter head explosions, and telepathic rocks are more than enough weird for the quirky/weird side of this film. Dildos and butt plugs did nothing for the story and all they did do is cut out a potentially large audience who could really benefit from an otherwise beautiful movie with a beautiful message. PS: I’ve seen it 3 times in theaters and plan to buy it when it’s available.

Well yes and no... Everyone who didn't enjoy this movie just hated all the creative and quirky scenes and thought it was all just to much. Everyone who loved this movie also loved the butt plug scenes and pretty much every creative and weird choice in this movie. So the audience who enjoyed this movie didn't get shortened, it just made it uncomfortable for those who didn't enjoy the movie even without those scenes.

@@braindeadotaku3520 You’re speaking in absolutes, which is nonsense. To say everyone who liked this movie also liked the butt plugs and dildos is ridiculous. We do NOT live in a world of absolutes. That is one of the greatest problems with society today, so many people see the ENTIRE world as black or white, A or B, and NOTHING in between. It is possible to love this movie and not like the butt plugs and dildos. I know because I am one of those people. You have to get out of the thinking that everyone either has to agree with you 100% or 0%. That is highly flawed and problematic thinking. BrainDead is a very appropriate username.
