This movie will play every string of your heart. My favorite film. I can relate to so much of it so maybe it makes it extra special for me. I was 8 years old in 1967 and floor sweeper in a small cinema in a small town in Iceland, cleaning up poppcorn and candy wrappers after every screening. I had a free pass to see all the movies many times because of this and developed a deep passion for cinema and worked in filmaking for 25 years when I got older even writing my own real motion picture that got many awards around the world. (Ikingut) I was a "Toto" far nort in Icefjord, Iceland one could say. :) Kudos for trying to spread the word to people and recommending this film.

I could not agree more, this is my all time favorite movie, not only for the acting, the love story, the ending, but the music. While growing up in France, Philippe Noiret was one of my favorite actors growing up, his booming voice and persona on film was a reassuring presence. The movie was the one my late wife and I watched on our first date. After she died at age 38, I chose Ennio Morricone’s “Cinema Paradiso” soundtrack as the music played in the funeral home. Every time I hear it, I still get goosebumps...

This is one of the most emotional movies I've ever experienced.. when you played a clip of the score I literally felt waves of goosebumps go through me. I can completely understand how so many people haven't experienced this film and therefore your choice of omitting spoilers. BUT, if ever you decide to do an in-depth analysis for fans of this film, judging on your look at Guadagnino's CMBYN, I can trust that you'll do Fredo justice. You got my sub, Keep up the great work!

I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it in 2014. I actually cheered when Alfredo used the mirror to show the movie on the far wall of the house across the plaza. It’s such a love story, that’s not about human love.

This sounds like the exact type of movie that my older brother and I would watch together. He lives in Taiwan, now, though. I may save this movie to watch in August, when he comes back home for a week, that way it'll be like it used to be before he moved, where we'd pick a movie neither of us had seen, watch it together, and discuss it afterwards.

One of the best movies EVER. So funny, so heart-breaking, so warm. If Big Night, Chef, and Tampopo are great films about celebration of food than Cinema Paradiso is a truly a celebration of the Love Of Film. In addition to all the wonderful reasons you've mentioned- I'd like to add another point- I love it also because the little kid, Toto, isn't entirely sugar sweet and perfect like so many kids are in films. He's complicated- he's cute, funny, adorable, and then he's really a monster, mischievous and sometime cruel. He's like a real kid. And of course the last scene is - without hyperbole- one of the finest moments in cinema. Not only does it celebrate the power of film and the love of movies but it also speaks to reverie of life, and the moments of tenderness and the expressions of love that are often withheld from our lives and from one another. Without trying to give any spoilers away- it's the compilation of the visuals of love that creates the overall effect and of course, the music. All that love and tenderness kept from our lives and potentially wasted on the edit room floor. Brilliant. WATCH IT NOW. In Italian and with subtitles- not dubbed.

You got the ending wrong. The ending is...(spoiler warning) The film Toto watched at the end was the last life-advice message from Alfredo was 'Now that you've found success with your life's passion & developed yourself into the man you wanted to be, find the girl that makes you passionately in love.' This continues in the director's cut version where we get another 30 mins to conclude the ending, where he chose to go back to find the girl he was so madly in love with in his youth. What was also heartbreakingly beautiful, is that Alfredo pieced it all together being old & blind, having done by memory doing it all his life. A very poetic way to pass on the advice, when one watching the film Toto would only understand.

This is my favorite of all the foreign films I love including among others, "A Man and A Woman", and "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"; all endearing and with wonderful music to say the least. Cinema Paradiso grabbed me from the beginning. As I followed the story along, I discovered the humor, passion, desire, hypocrisy, and above all, the love ♥. The music by Enrico is bittersweet. Or is it romantic. Follow the advice of this clip, and watch Cinema Paradiso. If you love music; if you love movies; you will love this wonderful film. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Thank you for this. I saw it first time last year, and it became one of my favorite films of all time. IMPORTANT TO ALL WHO WANT TO WATCH IT: I personally recommend watching the original cut and not the director's cut. The director's is about 1 full hour longer, but doesn't add much to the story except for towards the end. But that part at the end that the director's cut adds is best left away imo. The movie as a whole and especially one certain in particular becomes a lot stronger without that sequence towards the end. So in my opinion, watch the original version! :)

Here we are 2021 and I have just fallen in love with this iconic and epic love story. I have been blessed in my life time, to have traveled extensively to Roma, Milano and the Amalfi Coast. Italy is a country of warm, loving people surrounded by the natural beauty of legendary landscapes & colossal coastlines and epic mountainous regions. This visionary tale of love and love lost and friendships forged for life, was sure to tug at my heartstrings in every way imaginable. Bravo to all those who brought this masterpiece to fruition.

I saw the 2hr version and it was such a wonderful film. It reminded me a lot of Once Upon A Time In America (partly due to the amazing Morricone soundtrack and also due to its themes of time and ageing with both films taking place across a long stretch of time with a present day framing device) and it did carry a lot of that Leone feel. It really makes me want to seek out the longer cuts of this film, as with the aforementioned Leone epic.

When I was a kid, I discovered Ennio Morricone's - Nuovo Cinema Paradiso Soundtrack and fell in love with it. This soundtrack was one of the main reasons I wanted to learn Violin and “Dopo il crollo” from the Soundtrack was the first song I learned to play on Violin too. I literally waited my whole life to see this movie on the big screen and refused to watch it on VHS or DVD or any form of viewing means except on a big screen. There were several screenings in London last year (2021) but I was unfortunately away on all the dates the screenings took place, but this year in 2022 - There was a 1 off screening on my actual birthday! I set off on my own to central London... And my god... Only 1 movie has put me in tears and that was Schindlers List but I left the cinema in absolute tears. I was a mess for a good 30 minutes. It was more than what I even imagined this masterpiece would be... This is not just a movie... This is art to its truest form. Also, when the movie finished, not 1 person left their seat in the whole packed cinema until the very last credit left the screen... I've never ever seen that happen before... That is how I knew that so many people respect, love and adore this movie. If anyone reading this has never seen Cinema Paradiso - Trust me, watch it. It has everything, incredible story telling, amazing character development, happiness, laugher, love, sadness and heartbreaking moments... It's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen and am sure you'll agree with me after you've seen it.

The best movie ever. Have seen it something like 10 times, and still watch it once a year. And of course Morricone should have had an Oscar for the brilliant score. I agree with your analysis, except for one thing: it really isn´t just about the love of movies (though it´s a central part of the plot), but a story about life and friendship; about a little boy losing his father but finding Alfredo becoming his new father figure. The cinema is a frame story to the "real" story. It´s impressing that director Tornatore, who was 32 at the C.P. premiere, could make a film with so much wisdom and insight.

You were correct in not giving away the plot points; this is one of my all-time favorite movies, not only because my wife is Italian (and we live part-time in Italy) but because it is, as you say, 'everything a movie should be.' It is simply, just perfect, capturing the essence of authentic Italy, and its eternal timelessness. God bless all movie lovers...and this will make you love classic cinema all the more (just make sure to get the English subtitle version of it)...and after this, check out Jack Lemmon in 'Macaroni,' and 'The Great Beauty,' which is thoroughly haunting for anyone approaching retirement age. Funny how the Italians teach us how to make great movies again, just makes me sad that Americans only create comic book nonsense nowadays!

Exquisite, all time favorite film. Probably the most beautiful film I have ever seen. But loads of people DO know about it - it did win “Best Foreign Film” (as it was called then) at the Oscars. It’s interesting - when it was first released it Italy, it was much longer (you get to find out what happens to Toto’s “love”) and kinda dull. It bombed there, badly. (You can buy or rent a copy of the original, if you’re interested). So they edited it, and it was selected as Italy’s official entry for the Oscars’ foreign film category. It was so brilliant, of course it won. They then re-released the Oscar winning version in Italy. IT BOMBED AGAIN! But it was a hit around the world, especially in the U.S. Nice website, btw. My favorite all-time move - I saw it in 1989 and have seen it numerous times since, plus I own the DVD. :D

You should have also mentioned that people should watch the Theatrical version of this and NOT the Director's Cut.

@@St0nice I agree. For me the directors cut tries to tie up loose ends which should remain untied

I'll give the opposite advice: watch the director's cut

At least one American DVD theatrical version doesn't have the final scene of the two lovers as adults talking in the bar. An uplifting scene wasn't included!

This movie was my fathers favourite, and at the time I didn’t understand why until recently. This film will always have a special spot in my heart.

such a great film, the movie plays in palazzo adriano where my father is born and lifed since he was eighteen... every time when i see the piazza near my nonnas house i get the nostalgic feelings when i was a little boy playin in the streets which can be seen in cinema paradiso. The fun fact is that my uncle even plays a small role in the movie as a policemen
