Today we’ll be talking about Mobile Suit Gundam. The original one. The first one. Arguably the best one. And yes I was inspired by Super Eyepatch Wolf. #anime #gundam #gunpla #movie
I disagree , I think live action "Giant Robot " tv series , had a Greater Impact , in getting the ball rolling. Gigantor, & Atom boy as well as LIVE action "giant robot " Johnny Socko "
I think Amuro's experience with technology, his blooming Newtype abilities, and the fact that there has a learning computer that probably had some useful data already loaded in was what allowed him to win his first battle. People forget the Gundam's computer because it rarely comes up.
We don't get a decent plot centric learning computer until the series that had the 3-D Printer and 3 generations of pilots. I can not remember it's title, sadly. It was fun.
Like most people I know, I started with Wing on Toonami. After rewatching Wing, I saw the designs for G Gundam and had to watch that. Now I'm about 15 episodes into Mobile Suit Gundam, and it's already been my favorite Gundam series since the reactor explosion in episode 1.
Wait till your get to unicorn...don't skip zeta or zeta zeta. Stardust memories is beautiful and war in the pocket. Omg! So good and emotional.Char's counter attack is decent. Not my favorite. Origin is better once you've see at least the first series...
The last part about why people like mecha reminded me about my journey to being a mecha fan. Mecha is my favourite genre and has been for a very long time, but that wasn't always the case. When I was a kid, I loved Top Gun. It was one of my favourite movies. When I was first getting into anime in the early 2000s, I didn't like mecha. I thought they were a little silly, but then I discovered Macross. I loved it because of the fighter jets, then I quickly came around to giant robots because those fighter jets transformed into them. I think there may be a lot of people who don't get why mecha is awesome at first glance, like I was. They need a familiar point of entry like I got with Macross having fighter jets that transform into giant robots. Most mecha series try very hard to have in-universe reasons why their mecha exists. In Gundam it was because Minervsky particles made long-range combat untenible. In Macross, it was because the humans suspected the Zentraedi were giants. In Patlabor, it was because those mecha were invented as humanoid-like construction machines. To be honest, those explanations don't seem any more ridiculous than the suspensions of disbeliefs you have to accept for the fantastical technology in any other sci-fi franchise.
Gundam is one of the most influential anime of all time. I've been watching a lot of 80s mecha series in the last couple years and you really feel the shadow of Gundam looming over them. It created a massive boom of real robot series that continued throughout the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s when the mecha genre started to falter. Every single post-Gundam mecha show (even super robot shows) owes at the very least a little to Gundam. Gundam took the giant robots from the super robots genre and married it with the more mature and military aspects of anime like Yamato and books like Starship Troopers. Without Gundam, there wouldn't be Macross, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, etc. Even EVA wouldn't exist without Gundam (you can see a lot of Amuro Ray in Shinji Ikari) And Gundam isn't just influential, it is a great timeless story. I can't say I've seen every single Gundam series, movie and OVA, but I have watched a fair few of them. IMO, the OG Gundam is still the best. The themes of loss of innocence against the horrors of war still resonate today.
I've been a Gundam fan since the typical entry point of Americans, Gundam Wing's US airing. I've tried watching a number of different mecha anime over the years with mixed results and found that I'm a Gundam fan much moreso than I am a mecha fan. Great video! Looking forward to more Gundam content from you!
The Gundam franchise and the Mecha genre in general is very underrated and has a lot of appeal regardless Whether your into the real robot genre or super robot genre. Another thing that makes me go back to revisit Gundam or any Mecha series new or old was the Super robot wars games, just seeing all these crossover characters and their series interact is surprisingly good. I also recommend the Super robot wars franchise if you're into Mecha and Tactical RPGs. Basically any mecha series you can think of is in a srw game like Gundam, Mazinger, Getter robo, Code geass, Gaogaigar, Aura Battler dunbine, Gun x Sword, Gunbuster, and many more.
I do find it sad that the mecha genre has lost most of the popularity it had from the 80s up to the mid-late 2000s. I really hope there is a generation-defining mecha series that can kickstart another mecha boom just like what happened with Gundam and EVA.
When it comes to what is the best version of 0079, I have to say The Origin manga is better than both the TV series and the movie trilogy. It stays very faithful to the story and only makes minor changes and additions that overall improve it. It doesn't hurt that the whole thing is in color which I think makes it more beginner friendly to people who might not be into manga.
I'm building my FM Aerial while watching your video on the background. Probably my biggest regret in life would be not giving me time to watch one of the real size gundams in Japan while I was there (I wasn´t into Gundam at that time) :(
Yes, I already watch, seen and own quite a bit of Gundam. The series is shockingly dark and really deep. It's a bit dated in animation but damn...it still holds up.
So much of Gundam, but especially The Universal Century, has such vast and powerful things to say about Empathy and the way it shapes not only people but Humanity entirely has shifted the way I see life.
Without influences of Gundam Transformers would look completely different (possibly more brute like Mazinger or Getter in physical) Especially Optimus that basically had similar purpose as mass production model in original Toylines of Diaclone
@@gundam5281 Transformers was a product of the mecha boom that was created in the wake of Gundam. Even if there isn't direct influences, Transformers exists because Gundam was so popular.
35:00 and that is funny as hell, Mecha along with Tokusatsu were the birthplace of most tropes, action sequences, "transformations", powers, energy, and even a lot of concepts used very often in "shonen" manga and anime, literally Toriyama was one of the biggest fans of the mecha genre, his mecha designs were inspired by Nagano and Okawara, goku launched energy from his hands and could fly because the Getter robo did that like 20 years before dragon ball, or ultraman as well, people don't even realize how much of the anime, games and movies they like is either based or copied from mecha anime, for them is just "wow cool random stuff" while in reality those were references to kamen rider, Gundam, Space runaway Ideon, Getter robo and so on, It's quite ironic that for example, the Halo and Metal gear solid fandoms seem to hate Gundam and mechas, but their franchises were 80% inspired from gundam and other mechas, all of the "cool dynamic fights" came from macross where the mechas moved that way because they were robots with a lot of thrusters, when you think about it, most "Shonen" characters fight and fly the way they do because they ARE based on mecha fight scenes, they just changed mechas with a teenager with colorful hair because it's easier to draw than a mecha
Yeah people really underestimate how much mecha influenced anime as a whole. It always irks me when people say they don't like mecha except for gurren lagann and code geass. No you just straight up like mecha those anime share so much with other mecha it's insane to think they are the exception.
@@ChrizinatorThat surprises me because I am a nut about both Halo, Metroid, and mecha. Powered armor is just as cool as giant robots, and frankly are even more potentially practical in a military role because they don’t compete with current military vehicles. They can be used in conjunction with APCs and choppers and tanks to have real life-saving capabilities.
halfway through already a huge Gundam fan gotta say this is just a wonderful video. I think you present the show really lovingly and i can see it making someone actually want to watch it.
8:27 and Ken Ishikawa In fact if we're talking about Getter Robo, then it's mostly Ishikawa. His art is really good and shouldn't be overshadowed by Go Nagai's as they were both great friends.
I started with Gundam Seed but couldn't finish the series but most gundams were cool af. And later read Gundam Origin manga , also couldn't finish it. I still remember i tried to watch Gundam Wing cause it was from alternate universe also its OP was dope. But the best gundam series for me is Gundam 00. Imagine experience watching a series in HD, huge difference from previous series, vibrant colors, slick gundam design and easily recognisable pilots. Also the story is basically " What if.." situation but based in real world politics. Like middle eastern conflicts, US being US , beefing with Asian bloc , suicide terrorist bombing escalating into bigger war, the civilians POV etc. Season 1 is the best but eventhough season 2 is weaker as they deviate from grounded story into "preparation to communicate with other lifeform" as all bloc unite into an authoritarian regimes, the gundam designs, character development , OPs are saving the series
So…does that mean me watching the original series back in 2009 was a lie? 😆 In all seriousness I do like the Acguy and the Zock. I don’t know why the Gogg never clicked with me.
Honestly it's strange. The more Gundam you watch, the better Gogg becomes. Like, yeah it's stupid and looks horrid, but it's just so ridiculous and mem(or)able.
I always hated when someone who's never watched a single mecha said "mechas are focused on the robots" I haven't seen a single Super robot or Real robot show "focused on the robots", Mecha is an element of the story, part of the worldbuilding, it only tells you they live in a world with either technology, magic, or aliens, all of the stories in every mecha are focused on the characters, I wouldn't even call mecha a "genre" because it doesn't tell you anything about what it's going to be, it can be a police comedy, a romance story, it can be literally the first Idol or Isekai anime of the world, an anti war story, about an alien invasion, a story of Rambo in space, a mecha show can be anything
@@LatencyProblembut netflix didn't have their greasy hands in the writing process. With the live action, they will. Some of the netflix made shows have been lackluster
Absolutely phenomenal video. A true love letter to the original series. I got into Gundam in early high school. It completely reshaped the way I looked at the world with its characters and stories. I’ve got a lot of my friends into it, none have gotten as far as myself. But we do build days every Thursday, and they’ve all seen 1 or 2 of the anime’s.
About the novel, the anime came first, not the novel, so there was no "cut content". From what I remember, Tomino wrote it before the anime finished, as it was being canceled. But due to the anime later positive reception, he accepted that the novel would have a different ending if he had known Gundam wouldn't completely flop as it seemed to be
Never seen wing, 00, and stopped watching seed 10 episodes in. I binged all of 79 series though and ran through the rest of the UC stuff like zeta and double zeta. Just need to finish Reconguista in G and that'll be all of the UC adjacent stuff too. Just something about COOL ROBOT activates neurons.
00 is probably the best non-UC series in terms of writing consistency, characterization, and plotting. The nature of the technology kind of leads to some Super Robot shenanigans though if that's not your cup of tea.
build fighters was my first gundam series and im currently watching the uc in chronological order msg aside from my recent watches were the origin and chars counter attack which imo wasnt that good it felt incomplete. I currently have about 25 gunpla kits 5 of which are built and i keep getting more instead of building the ones i have
Build Fighters is actually a good place to start. Sorry Origin and CCA weren’t to your liking but hey, there’s lots of Gundam. Good luck with your backlog. I’ve got a few I need to get to.
@@Chrizinator the origins was great it was cca that i wasnt impressed by. a few of its new characters namely the cyan haired girl was insanely annoying and whiney with no redeeming qualities. imo cca would have been a great end with the 3 main protags all working alongside eachother similarly to the yugioh bonds beyond time film. amerou would obviously be piloting the nu gundam and kamile would probably be an mechanic/engineer and judau i dunno. in 0079 it was established that 50% of earths populace was wiped out when the colony was dropped on it as well as the colony drop in zz so following it up with axis is just too far.
@@Chrizinator Good point, showing the tech getting more compact is pretty cool. I do love the Origin version's shoulder cannon option, and the chest/collar launcher that seems to have maybe drawn a little inspiration from the Ground Type's multi launcher in 08th.
Ah.. Mobile Suit Gundam.. The series that did so badly that they effectively canceled the show "shortened it" and moved animators on to Ultraman Anime... And was so bad that Bandai basically paid pennies for the property. Now if they could just get themselves out of their UC ass and make some interesting stuff again... I might attempt to watch it again. Sorry.. UC sucks.. It sucked so much they had to make G-Gundam, which did amazing.. But as always effing Genwunners screwed everything up and whined like Amuro until we went back to pathetic little whiny Protags that honestly would have been shot dead by their own team mates if they where even remotely real.
Except First Gundam succeeded after its cancellation. The trilogy did well, model kits sold well. Zeta is the highest rated Gundam series in Japan, Char’s Counterattack did well. War in the Pocket is still regarded as the best OVA. Victory ended up the way it did because Tomino was tired of Gundam. Sunrise opted for Alternate Centuries to make money yes but also because there wasn’t much left to do with UC. I don’t know where you’re getting this idea that UC failed despite the fact that we keep getting UC stuff. Before you call me a UC elitist, I love most of the Alternate Universes. Even my least favorite ones have things I like about them. This whole trashing the classics to elevate modern entries is such a dishonest and pathetic argument. Without UC there is no alternate universes. You sound extremely bitter. And it’s clear you’re trying to egg people on. There are better ways to express yourself without sounding like a jerk.
