It's good that the new Toyotas aren't really that compelling. Like a new 4Runner doesn't do anything that an older 4Runner can't do, and the new Land Cruiser will arguably do things worse than the older models. After owning a 5th gen 4Runner for a few years now, I really regret not getting an 80 series Land Cruiser when they were more affordable. After being in the Toyota scene for a while, I realize that the '80 series is the last actual off-roader that they made for the US. Since the '80s now cost an arm and a leg, I think the XJ is still the way to go for a budget rig that is super capable.

I made a spreadsheet recently as I contemplated buying a TRD Pro Sequoia or building my 2004 GX470 for dragging around a travel trailer with my family of 6. I can finance a new TRD Pro Sequoia (because used prices are still above MSRP anyway) and spend around $117k over the life of the loan with 10% down and 8% interest. This will result in a bone stock rig. ...or I can beef up my 2004 creampuff with: a crate XAT 4.7 longblock with forged rods, supercharger cams, and other supporting mods to make up 800hp reliably for $14,000 Nomad valve body for $2,200, armor for around $10,000 Elate/Bullet 1,900cc supercharger and tune for $10,000 54 Weld portals for $20,000 ECGS Dana 60 with 4.30 gears and locker $7,000 ECGS front diff and locker with 4.30 gears for $3,000 Wheels for $2,000 37" Kenda RTs $2,000 Snorkel fro $350 Atlas G3 4 speed t-case with 2.11:1 Low, 2.72:1 Low Low, and 5.44:1 Low Low Low $4,500 So for around $75k I can build a vehicle I already own over the same 6 year period to do what I want it to do with all the capability I could ever want. And I would be saving money. A lot of money at that. The current car market and interest rates are making this a much easier decision.
