Not a video I really wanted to make, as I was hoping either Amazon or Exide would resolve the issue amicably, but after being told by Amazon no further discussion about the issue would take place and being spoken to very rudely by an Exide representative, I can no longer recommend the Exide batteries we have been using for quite a while now. As always, thank you all for watching.

I think it is not really a problem of the batteries themselves, but rather the way they have been stored before use. Since they have to be sold filled with acid (which sucks), they are sulfating, when sitting on the shelf and I do not think anyone is trickle charging them. So when they are sold, they already may have 75% damage done and you would not know. If they were not pre-filled, I am sure there will be no issue with them and most other batteries....

Had the same problem with an exide battery, luckily I bought it from a local dealer, seems obvious to me that Exide have a problem with their product.

I had an old Dodge Ram v8 I put an exide in around 2007. About ran it dead trying to start it after a engine rebuild in 2010. Fast forward to Jan 2014 when it hit 20-30 below zero in northern Ohio, still worked like a champ. Like other comments on here sometimes you just get lucky, with any brand.

The charging system in this vehicle was tested as fully functional, so that was not the issue. Coincidentally, the replacement battery I did finally coax out of Exide failed in a completely different vehicle after only a few months. Definitely not top quality in my book. Thanks for watching!

Are you aware that AGM batteries require a higher than normal charging voltage? They require your charging system to deliver 14.7 - 14.9 Volts otherwise sulfaton will occur and the battery will die a premature death. Many vehicles' charging systems were designed only for lead acit batteris so deliver much less charging voltage than what's needed for an AGM. Perhaps this is the case with your vehicle. In that case, the problem would not lie with the battery quality but with an AGM battery being used in a vehicle that's not capable of fully charging one. Perhaps a voltage booster may have helped avoid this problem.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 4 года назад
Well aware - the particular vehicle this was installed in has a charging system that achieves that voltage consistently, and previously ran an Optima battery for 10 years and has run a Sears Die Hard Gold AGM battery for 5 or so years since. Definitely the battery. I had one other Exide battery in another one of my vehicles and it died quite quickly, too. Just a poor product.

question... Why did you buy the battery from Amazon when you can get it almost anywhere locally for a lower price? I see what you mean about warranty, and they should stand by it if you have a sales receipt.
@redonKiLaus

At the time, Amazon had, by far, the lowest price on the battery, and of course, advertised the warranty as being the same as from all other retailers. At this point, if pricing is the same or lower locally, of course that would be the logical option. Thanks for watching!

Same has happened to me. I bought my AGM FPAGM for a Toyota RAV4 from AutoPlicity. Bottom line is that neither Exide nor AutoPlicity will replace this battery. The battery is just over a year old and has lost its capacity to the point that the starter just clicks and will not crank the car. I have had to be jumped 4 times in the past couple of weeks. For a $200 battery this is ridiculous. After pushing, here is the best Exide will do. I was told to get the battery tested, take pictures of the battery, go buy a new battery, and send all the documentation in for review. Within 3 to 4 weeks they will review the documentation and determine if I can get a refund of the original purchase price. Yeah, I'll probably do that, but that is not what the warranty states. It says they will exchange the battery up to 48 months. In case anyone is wondering, the cars charging system has been checked out as working good. Battery tests bad.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 лет назад
That's unfortunate to hear, and obviously I sympathize with you after my ordeal with Exide. I switched to a Sears Die Hard Gold AGM in the vehicle that this battery died in, and use Odyssey batteries in my other vehicles, so either of those should be good options for replacement if you still are in need. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus I ended up taking the loss and buying a 5 year free replacement battery from Batteries plus www.batteriesplus.com/battery/car-and-truck/toyota/rav4/2009/l4-2.5l-585cca/sli24fagmdp They have a few stores in the Tampa area and I don't believe I'll have problems getting them to honor the warranty... providing they are still in business 5 years from now. I hope to be able to keep the car for at least another 5 or 6 years. Thanks for letting me know that I was not the only one getting the run around from Exide. It’s my personal belief that AGM’s don’t belong under the hood, especially in hot climates. I don’t care what brand Optima, Exide, VMax you name. But AGM’s are superior for every other application like off grid, inverter, marine, RV “house” duty.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 лет назад
I've done quite a bit of lab testing of batteries in my day and from that, as well as my own experience living in a hot climate, AGMs definitely do outlast lead acid in the majority of circumstances. Not all are built to the same quality standards, however, which is the reason I transitioned away from Optima and tried Exide when Optima moved their manufacturing operations out of the US. At this point, the best I've found for longevity in Arizona is Odyssey, with my hope that the Sears Die Hard Gold AGM that I am currently "field testing" in my 4Runner will also make that category. I have one Odyssey battery that lasted approximately 10 years in this climate before it failed, but that was due to the vehicle being in a collision and not the battery itself. Thanks for watching!
@SkypowerwithKarl

I think you have been lucky in having applications where the heat from the radiator and or engine was not directed at the the battery. If the battery is sitting in a cool corner, I'd expect excellent performance from an AGM. Since Iv'e known Murphy so well, I tend to go with low maintenance wet types under the hood. By the way, I also will NEVER buy a foreign made battery. I got seriously screwed by going buy price and ended up replacing a 1050 amp hour bank in my boat after only a year! Keep in mind they never got under 12.3 , never warm and charged with a 100 amp smart charger. Went to VMax AGM's and a year later they have gotten STRONGER!!?? You get what you pay for. Stay away from those cheap Chinese, black with white text batteries.

Very sorry to hear that Amazon and Exide are being such AH's about an obviously defective battery. FWIW, last week I purchased an Exide AGM 12VDC battery (size group 49/H8 at Rural King ... it sells under the Rural King name). I have not yet installed it and I will return it this week. I paid about $150 +tax+core. It may be a decent battery, but Exide should be aware that consumers have the ability to vote with their dollars...and I think that they treated you very poorly and cheated you. I could have been their next victim but I never will be because I'll NEVER ever buy their products again. BETTER LISTEN UP EXIDE! YOU CAN NOT GO AROUND CHEATING PEOPLE!
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 6 лет назад
In the end Exide eventually gave me a new battery (which happened to fail within a few months of receipt), but that was after I argued with them back and forth for over a month. If Rural King is an authorized brick and mortar Exide dealer, replacement shouldn't be an issue for you if it were necessary, but with the track record I've had with these batteries now I wouldn't buy another one. I am 100% on either Sears Die Hard Gold AGM batteries or Odyssey batteries, depending on the application. Thanks for watching!

EXIDE in the USA sucks, which is why it filed for bankruptcy in the US at 2020. EXIDE in Europe is great. I've installed 4 regular and 7 AGM EXIDE battery and never had any problem. By the way, to get an idea of the battery's condition, get a digital car battery tester (Topdon BT200 or something). The tester may not be always accurate - battery that's very low in voltage will not give accurate result (therefore you'll need to charge it up then retest). But for a decently charged battery (13v like you have claimed), it will show how much Cranking Amp it's got.

I have bought two of these batteries, one my car and one for my wife's. The one in my car is almost two years old and is starting to crank slowly, also the sides look a bit swollen. Did you ever get them to replace the battery for you? It is a shame they are giving you the run around, I thought AGM batteries were supposed to be a bit more resilient than old school flooded ones.
@redonKiLaus
@redonKiLaus 7 лет назад
Amazon said they would issue a refund for the batteries but I never got it. Eventually, after a month or so dealing with the issue, Exide Corporate agreed to exchange my battery for a new one at their local warehouse. If you buy from them/their dealers in person, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting warranty replacements, but definitely stay away from purchasing these batteries through Amazon because there is obviously some massive misunderstanding between the two companies. AGM batteries are generally much better than lead-acid ones, but quality has been going downhill over the past few years with cost-cutting endeavors. The best AGM line I know of is from Odyssey, and many years into owning one of their batteries I still have no issues. I used to like Optima and had a US-made unit from them that was 9 years old and still working fine when the car it was in was crashed, but I had a 1 year old Mexico-produced one crack on me, so I stopped using their products after that. I am currently testing out the Sears DieHard Gold AGM line to see if they hold up - at least with the Sears batteries, I can walk into a storefront and get a replacement. Thanks for watching!

I suppose that just makes another case for avoiding the batteries, at least until they figure out their quality issues. After fighting with Exide for quite a while they did (begrudgingly) replace my battery, and the new one also failed within a few months. Something just isn't right with the product if that type of failure happens (and in my case, it was vehicle independent). My recommendation is to try Odyssey if you want to spend a little extra on a battery, or to try Sears Die Hard Gold AGM if you want something less expensive that is also supported locally. Well... 1 bad battery can happen to anyone and the company should make good on it. He gave them a chance, went to their website which, strangely enough, wasn't working. When that didn't work he sent unanswered emails. When that didn't work he spoke with a guy who was rude. You go ahead and be a fanboi if you like but when something goes wrong which sometimes happens and the company has the chance to make it right but completely fumbles the effort, that isn't happenstance.

This issue has nothing to do with Exide. You did not buy the battery from them therefore your contract is not with them. You needed to have taken this up with Amazon. I have read the comments before posting, so I see Exide went above and beyond and gave you another battery under warranty. Good job Exide.

That's what you get when you buy from Amazon.

Not particularly, just sharing my experience. I used to vouch for these batteries and recommended to many of my personal friends as well as those here on RU-vid before I had issues with them. Thanks for watching!

Small claims court for $200? Really. This is after never having had any previous problems with this battery company. Move on.
