Just to clarify to anyone who may be new around here: Eamon and I LOVE living in our van!! This video was more of a parody on the negative bits of vanlife than us actually whining about our choice to live this way! Okay, happy watching :)

Totally understand. Sometimes living in a giant anchor (house) isn't fun either. Don't think most people's goal is to live in a van but rather to be able to do things that require mobility. Keep the faith!

Yea, i actually stopped at 5:10 and was about to have a go at you explaining that it was your choice to move into a Campervan with no shower and no proper toilet! I mean you could have moved into a tiny camper but with a "bathroom", there are plenty; saying this because i'm about to do the same. Sell everything i own and buy a Motorhome and hopefully fulfill my dream of traveling the world in camper. Aaaand i realised that you are not actually "whining". As you're saying: " more of a parody on the negative bits of vanlife". Still, you guys could have bought a proper motorhome. This is the first video of you guys that I'm watching, and don't know if you bought it like it is or if you built it yourself. In any case, you could have added a tiny shower cabinet with a tiny tiny WC haha :D :P Parody or bitter truth, I understood what you were actually trying to tell us, in a "funny" way :P Better to joke a bit about the cons instead of letting them get to you and eventually drive you mad hahaha :D So, congratulations !! Like the CamperVan, like the idea and what you're doing and most of all I truly admire your courage to just do it! Soon enough i will to, despite all the cons. I know for sure the pros make it worth all the hassle and fuzzle :D I'm sure it's worth it in the end. End of day, you're really free. Not chained to a location, mortgage and so on. I just have a quick question. Two actually. How much did it cost you to build your motorhome (or buy if you bought it) ? AND how are you managing to sustain expenses ? Do you work ? Well, is Vlogging your job ? Are you managing to move forward with with income from youre activities whilest on the road or some savings are essential ? If you can please let me know, I am really curious and would really like to know, specially because I am about to do the same thing. And most likely I will end up spending all my savings on the Motorhome itself and probably "accesories" and whatever else needed to be ready to get on the road and fuck away finally "seeing" the world!! (HOPEFULLY). CHEERS!!! And again, congrats for your personality, charisma; for how you are and how you "act", showing us how life on the road is. So thank you for that! Also as related to my second question, liked+subscribed your channel !!! AAAndd yea. Looking forward to watching some more of your videos :D And also looking forward to reading your answers to my questions, if I am not asking too much. Cheers and keep on enjoying your trip!! :D

One HUGE down side that i have NEVER seen anyone mentioning on any video, is that it is a van, which means its a vehicle, which mean it drives! Which means that some grandma can just run a red light and drive right into the side of your van doing 50 and boom! Youre homeless....that simple, that fast...
@eamonandbec
@eamonandbec 6 лет назад
That is a FANTASTIC point that we completely missed! I think all vanlifers know of this possibility but it's such a tragedy that we try to forget that an accident would wipe us out completely. But, great reminder and point taken for the next van life confessions video! Thanks for your input :):)

@@grayches1 If you're breathing, you're taking risks. ;) This is no worse than other lifestyles and in some ways is better. Cheaper, for one thing! I've lived in houses or rentals all my life, and I have to move every year or two, I get so bored. Van/RV life sounds pretty sweet to me, as I now work from home. I like the idea of exploring new spaces, staying as long as I want, then moving on.

This was actually super useful. Because these are serious things that a person should consider, even though you had a fun hearted nature, these are things people don’t think about. I want to convert my Ford Expedition into a camper, not for permanent living, but for traveling and camping, and while I don’t plan on having all the fancy stuff like yours, (since I want to make it a temporary build that I can take out if needed) these are a lot of things I’m having to consider.

If you plan ahead and really think through everything van life is really amazing. You can possibly have a small dishwasher, although that's super rare, you can have a slide-out toilet that won't stink, and you can have the temperatures be just like a house

Bec and Eamon, GREAT blog! Honest, fun and informative! I’m in the process now, after traveling via Prius for years and either renting or staying with friends.! I’m 57 and so many retirees have done this over the years - and of course I lived through the 70’s and it was def a revolution then. It’s awesome to see history repeating itself and you guys living the lifestyle. Well, minus the muchies, twinkies and mucho weed! Do you guys have specific places that you park? Like random neighborhoods when it's just you two and your back in Canada, or are you parked at friend and family locations? Looking forward to your next travel adventure. Guessing Alaska! Xox

Tiny house person here. Yes, hauling water is my biggest grief, even more so than lack of electricity and refilling propane tanks. You totally do become accutely aware of how much water you use when you're having to refill and haul it. It's heavy. I've learned to get by with two 6 gallon tanks that can last me 2 to 3 days. Summer is not so bad. I go fill up at a natural spring near me. That water is so fresh and awesome. Winter is a different story. Can't get to the spring because the road isn't plowed so have to rely on filling up at friends. Last resort is the river across the road, but it's slightly greenish and not entirely contaminate free. Even after filtering it's not so good.

It's funny how priorities change based on where you think you will spend most of your time as a vanlifer. Thank you for your honesty! Having already seen the world I'm definitely grateful for my central heating, TOILET, shower, large refrigerator, queen sized bed, and 65" tv with cable and recliner. I hope youhave an eciting, happy and safe adventure! I suspect in time you will learn a beach is a beach (the food changes but that's what kitchens are for), driving endlessly along highways isn't much fun, and no matter where you are it's probably either too hot or too cold. I've been to every continent except Antarctica and this old fart loves nothing more than working in his garden or enjoying pizza and beer in his recliner watching baseball! Peace and God bless you both! P.S. jeez I still remember standing in the Louvre thinking "ehh" (even though I'm cultured enough to read Seutonius for fun)🤭🧐🤪

I'm amazed you missed the most important problem/risk: when your van breaks down and needs to get towed into the shop you lose your home, potentially for days. Most places won't let you sleep in your car overnight while it's being repaired! Or even see it. At least over here. I saw the book you're reading btw Bec; are you thinking of going omnivorous on us? x
@eamonandbec
@eamonandbec 6 лет назад
That was actually the point we meant to make with the "van breakdown" and needing to be a bit handy lol but got a little side tracked and realized when we edited that it wasn't what we necessarily wanted to say LOL. And no... definitely not omnivorous!! The book is actually all about plant based living and why you should be vegan :)

@mark smith Not in many European countries and part of the UK. They will rip you off on camping fees and fines. In the Netherlands and England for example it is not even allowed to camp wild nor to sleep in your car or van. You get a fine without warning if you get caught sleeping in your car.

The only thing that i think is horrible about vanlife is cooking . When you cook you’re goint to smell like carrots , cauliflower , zucchini patatoe etc etc etccccc 😡 and the electricity is an issue as well . The heating issue isn’t a big deal . Get a heating blanket (electric) , its only 45-80 watts and it keeps you really warm

This doesn't apply to you, but one of my main concerns about van life is company, since I usually travel alone. Until now, I always met people in hostels, hitchhiking... if I get a van, I will have much more freedom to go wherever and whenever I want, but I feel like I won't meet nearly as many people as I do now. What do you think about it?
@jeffreyblaise3198

It seems like this is more expensive to live in a van than apartment. The sprinters cost like 40,000 plus remodeling them to live in is like 7,000. 47k is maybe the equivalence of living 4 or 5 years in an apartment. So financial saving couldn’t be the reason. Unless I’m wrong 🤷🏾‍♂️

Not trying to be a bummer, (while I consider this)but I wonder if there was a crash and social mayhem, might be better to be dug in on a piece of land than dependent on retail fuel, food, van parts and supplies, that cannot be stored up? On the other hand, what the heck? I suppose I could keep some fishing and hunting gear on board. Thank you for your video!

I'm sorry, but calling this a parody is untrue. I'm an owner/operator & I travel ALOT throughout the US. I do have plenty of room in my rig for myself, but I couldn't imagine having anyone sharing that space. True, the van has a little more room, but with all the add-ons & 2 people living in it, that takes ALLLL that room away. I'm not knocking them, but van living isn't that great.

Also insulating your space is crutial and common sense in any build of living space...even my kids knew that when they build forts as 6 year olds..we watched several vids of dos and donts and I kinda feel bad that u guys even made it this long lol

Well it's nice to know none of that matters much to me... these all come off as being complaints from someone used to living in a big house with middle class problems. If you get annoyed about spending all your time cleaning...don't spend all your time cleaning or make cleaning easier. have more realistic expectations of what you need. if your an introvert don't live with someone or get some screens in your van. if you need routine you can have it, if you really need to just travel slower and stay in one place longer if needed. Yes maybe some people will have all these problems but most of them can be fixed and the other half won't apply to a lot of people.

5:00 recirculating 2 gallon water pump system! Why am I having to list this simple thing on almost every video regarding van life! Hot water for a shower... endless, filtered recirculating 2 gallon pump system. Water for dishes...endless, filtered recirculating 2 gallon pump system There's four gallons that don't need to be bothered with on a daily basis.

Many people these days keep dogs along in their vans. Any suggestions on that? Personally I do not like the idea. Is it really okay to confine them to small spaces and subject them to all these problems we chose for ourselves?

Beano for stinky farts!! Have you thought of using the child proof thongs for your drawers and doors? If you have storage under your bench, maybe carry more water. You can always heat a little water for dishes and bitch baths.

So happy to know we were able to bring a bit of laughter to your day. The shirt was actually from the merch store we opened to help give Trinity a new heart! It's closed for now but maybe we'll reopen with some fun swag in the future :)

Seems like that dude was on the right path already. Scuba-travel expat- life in the tropics abroad in places like Palawan is the greatest lifestyle ever! Let the masses chase some illusion of success and happiness in the states. Especially if you already have found a adventurous life partner as a dive partner. " Finding a fair woman that is a passionate diver is rare for most scuba bums" Forget about having children. However, Florida is worth a dive trip if your into wreck diving and sharks, I guess? I think problem number 1 and 2 can be solved by leaving your shoes at the door, just like most asians do. We asians have less problem with dirty floor because we always take off our shoes/sandals/boots before entering a house. Also ño dishwasher? Well it just a matter of habbit. And well, building a van are not as simple as it looks. You should really think your needs, such as buying a fridge. Also run out of propane? Man I couldn't imagine if someday I have a kid and forget to buy diapers or run out of milk supplies 😂😂😂

@AsHLiegH-MaRie HoPe Well, it would be hard to find a 24hr one when you were in the middle of nowhere XD Unless you want to stick close to the city. But I think if I have a van to live, I would often go faraway from civilization. Btw I tried van life in spring and early winter. When it's warm, I use flipflop unless I go outside for a long time. And when it's cold, I always planned well if I have to go outside the van so that I don't have to take off my shoes often. It saved me a lot from cleaning, especially if it was muddy outside.

You can get sensors to tell you your propane level, water level, etc so you can stay on top of those and not run out.

How do you like the larger 30gal water tank? Is it easy to clean? how often do you need to clean it? I do not really want to haul water all the time, but I plan on living full-time in my van....( in future once Virus is done???....) thanks.

Great video guys! Love your videos, you always give so much great information! We just quit our jobs and are still looking forward to van life! We also hail from Toronto and have heard a lot of bad things about insurance in Ontario for van conversions. Do you have any videos where you talk about this? I think there are a lot of people pulling their hair out over it and any help would be great!

For body smells have a small spray bottle of vinegar. Spray problem area, wait, and wipe away if you don't have time to let it air dry. If the crack of your ass stinks, wet wipes, baby wipes, or toilet wipes are much more gentle. I watch for entertainment and to see how people live in small spaces. I need land to grow things to be happy.
