Why are people so upset about ACS (Primary) going co-ed? Are same-sex schools elitist? Do guys from boys schools not know how to talk to girls?

The elitist isn’t coming from single or coed it was just top school mentality

I’m glad I went to a same sex school! I was in co-ed primary and my self esteem was rock bottom. But being with the girls (although some very bitchy) helped me to be more confident without the awkwardness of puberty & guys.

I was from the original Garbrielite school which by this September would have produced 2 cardinals. Single-gender school is fun, from young art teachers having their lockers bursting with love letters, to a principal talking so much that the residents around the school filed many noise pollution reports with the police; and not forgetting a classmate in primary school who flashed his manhood for 50 cents each time 😅

Was from st nicks too - in fact Denise's batch as well so I do vaguely recall seeing her ard back then. The anecdotes are definitely relatable, back then we didn't think much of it but recalling it now - it's definitely quite elitist

All the wartime flashbacks will come back to alot of us. I was from ACS and then had to go to AES cos of grades. and before Y2K there was Far East Plaza, a meeting point for various schools boys / girls / Co-ed / top / low... everything that was mentioned in the video happened to me at Far East plaza. maybe to a few good other peeps. good times.

I was from a co-ed primary school then to a single-sex secondary school then back to co-ed JC. Everyone has their own unique life journey but I would say mine is pretty mild. Agree to most of the points being made by the cast especially about what JP had to say about being in an all-boys school. Given the opportunity, I would still send my child to a single-sex secondary school as confidence during puberty, I feel, should be built among a close group of friends and not be judged by the opposite sex, boys and girls alike.

Was from a co-ed mission school for pri sch and secondary school. Think it gives the most balanced experience and also helps in character development

The best option is hybrid, I went to a co-ed primary school then went to an all boys mission secondary school. The single sex schools with a strong school spirit really makes a difference, even if youre not the type to be onz about school activities. Its really the brotherhood you feel

St Nick’s primary and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls Secondary. It was yucky. Live started only in Tertiary education which was quite fun and also unassuming if you never mixed with opposite sex before.

Co-ed pri (Great) > All-girls sec (Mixed feelings) > Co-ed JC (Best time of my life) I agree that those who went the full all-girls route felt like they were more sheltered than those who came from co-ed. But at the same time, the irony is that the girls I know that went from all-girls pri to all-girls sec had more guy friends than I did... With activities outside of school. In a sense, even though they had an all-girls experience, but with most of the same-sex school being more well-off, the parents tend to send their kids for more extra-curricular activities or camps outside of school that give them the exposure to social interactions with different genders and personalities, while still limiting the amount of interaction time so the probability of getting into a relationship is lower. Anyway, all-girls sec school can be rabak at times also, but it really depends on the person. During my time in sec sch, a girl set a small fire on the toilet, and to this day no one knew why she did that, but the police was called. Someone I knew but was not close to was abused by the disciplinary teacher, where he brought her to his house. That same disciplinary teacher was known to go around scolding girls for wearing shorts under their skirts (how he knew they wore shorts under their skirts... the implication is clear). A classmate of mine self-harmed cos of family issues. I guess no matter which school, co-ed or same-sex, there will always be such incidences. I both hated and loved my time in an all-girls sec school. Being around girls was great - I felt comfortable enough to explore my own sexuality, in which I'm sure my friends wouldn't be surprised if I ever came out to them as a lesbian. At the same time, they can be very critical. I opened up about my personal issues - abuse - to people I considered my friends, and they dissed and called me/my issue "crazy people talk". So yea, typical teenage ups-and-downs during my whole sec school life that I have mixed feelings about to this date. I'm glad that I went to an all-girls sec sch, just because I don't know how all this would hold up if I went to a co-ed school instead. Oh, and even though I went to co-ed pri and JC, I still don't really know how to interact with guys to this date. Just because I CAN talk to guys, doesn't mean I understand guys or know what I'm doing half the time 😂 PS. I do like to buy blogshop stuff though

I was a mixed like denise where I came from co-ed then went to girls sch. The "mixed" girls like me were more tom-boyish while the girls who go girls school for 10 years were vv girly, especially those who didn't have much interaction with guys during that period. The vv girly ones would look at every guy our age on the street and say dude was handsome coz their own view on guys is romanticised by media. I hear once they go to jc they get some culture shock to find out not every guy is so romantic. My sister actually warned me before I entered girls sch that every girl from girl school is super weird around guys when they come jc. I think it's best for a child not to go to a same-sex sch for 10 years straight. either pri sch or sec sch. Better not be both.

Went from now-defunct Yung An Primary (so jialat but thankfully had good teachers) to RGS. Detested life in RGS and their culture as well as some teachers. Loved and adored my JC class in RJC - never a dull moment. We had 21 boys and 7 girls. And I daresay life was so much better precisely because we had a lot of diversity in our JC class - not everyone was from (elitist) RI and RGS, and we had a couple of students from different ethnicities and cultures. Shouout to our awesome teachers and principal at RJ too ( Thank you Mr Winston Hodge). So much fun!

Funniest having classmates asking female teachers if chapter 7 in sec 2 science got practical!!! good old days..

Life is now co-ed so schools should be co-ed. Listen if this was back in the 1950s and women were still our live in slaves, same-sex schools would be fine. Nowadays men and women interact/work together in all facets of life. Also, for most people the most significant relationship in their life is going to be their opposite sex partner. Learning to interact harmoniously with the opposite sex is essential

Coed pri sch > all girls sec sch. I think that worked out well for me, growing and learning along boys and girls (replicating real life) in pri sch. Then going through puberty away from the eyes of boys, tgt with my girl friends was the best thing- a phase where you try to find your identity and am confused or even insecure about yourself, I didn't need the pressure of having boys around in my life 😂

Teen pregnancy is much higher in co-ed schools too. Co-ed school allows for the young boys and girls to somewhat climatise themselves in how to act infront of the other gender but yet like one comment mention, being in the same sex school, if gives some kind of a shelter(can lead to a daring grown-up) and it really shapes how the gender acts in the future, be it good or bad. it might seem hypocritical but, based on statistics alone. Here's what is "optimal": girls > same-sex schools, boys > co-ed schools

I taught in a same sex school before. And before you ask, I'm a guy and it was a girl's school. And I have to concur. While I'm a very adaptive person, I will say it was a nightmare in a handbasket. It wasn't all bad to be frank, there were a lot of girls very worth teaching. listened, paid attention, and gleaned a lot from the lesson, were respectful and very grateful. But there was also this one girl who didn't pay attention, then disrupted the lesson by causing her groupmates to just be inattentive, mobilised her group to make other groups inattentive by doing stupid things like sharing the answers on whatsapp so they were playing games every chance they could, and then kicking up a huge gooddamn fuss when I clamped down on it resulting in multiple hours of post-class work to resolve the situation. Also, she had rich parents who had spoiled her rotten so guess what, I found myself on the defensive against this girl who very skillfully used her peers and her tears, so I ended up having to answer to the parents. Fortunately the other teachers weighed in and supported me but goddamn the nightmare did not stop there. she took every conceivable opportunity to deal damage every single chance she got thereafter, and in ways she knew could get away with.

huh.... I am from a normal neighborhood school. No bloodshed or gangster fight throughout my school days. Having police presence in our school premises was barely seen. In fact, my sister who went to same-sex school, told us a lot of problem kids and sexual orientation issues. In my school, any gangster-like or skirt-up actions are barely unheard of. And I really shock you guys have the impression that normal neighorhood school are all gangsters and problematic.

Meanwhile I was from Chung Cheng & I learnt that it was previously associated negatively with gangsters as some of its students supported Communists during Singapore's pre-independence era. I also remember a game played during 1 of our drama enrichment classes that's like musical chairs but instead of finding a chair when the music stops, you're supposed to find a classmate of the opposite gender & hold their hand. I hesitated more than my classmates (as I was thinking if female classmates might still feel uncomfortable, despite us being in a game setting, & accuse me of molest) & thus I got eliminated earlier. After the game my classmate told me: "You have a problem with your attitude." Well that escalated quickly!

They are plenty who did very well academically in coed school. All boy school give me a vibe of army camp. Girl school I hv no idea. That being said. I can easily tell if a person come from a same gender school or not. The emotional maturity is very important. More than grades and results.
