I like what he said about not trusting boredom. That goes for all emotions, sometimes they're justified and worth acting on and sometimes they're not, but almost everytime they're strong enough to convince us they're right. We need to normalise taking a step back from emotional reactions and questioning if that emotion is rational and worth listening to or not, then deciding what we want to do with that emotion instead of being reactive straight away.

In my younger years, I found being bored a creative time. It was the 60’s and 70’s when I was designing and making wall hangings. Maybe I should call it quiet time. But I was bored, sitting in the car on our way to visit parents on weekends. Same old scenery. No phone to distract me. The creatives juices would eventually start flowing. Ended up being productive and fun….even exciting.

Love this talk Kevin! Most people are literally afraid to get bored these days. I missed boredom and decided to just be bored. Boredom helps sometimes. It may lead us to ponder about our actions and imagine things. Whether helpful or unhelpful is a different case altogether. But, boredom maketh life.

Interesting but missed one major point of "boredom" - that is where feeling "familiar" gets confused with feeling bored which causes many severe problems.

Boredom in school is caused by poor curriculum where we do not challenge our students. They are not learning becasue of it!

I would dare to say that boredom is the core reason there are so many divorces in the world today. Boredom may well be the source /culprit of the breakdown of marriages. “Something to think about”. Seek peace , pursuit it and maintain it!

@Eleebelle I think to some of us that seems like a strange string of thoughts. Was obedience even in this video? The point seemed to be a root cause analysis of bad behavior, with boredom being a factor. The old phrase "idle hands are the devil's playground" comes to mind.

As a theology professor, you should have made the distinction between "stillness" and boredom - that would have been very helpful. We live in a society that is always on and the still life - perhaps the boring life - allows for processing, reflection, contemplation and ultimately much better decisions and ideas - you missed the boat

@atenas80525 , It seems Kevin Gary was talking about the subjective component of boredom or an experience that is interpreted as boring. And cautioning how easily it can turn into distraction. As someone who loves stillness and Journaling, I have to say I find these moments quite interesting and often the highlight of my day.

I love that your Tetris joke didn't land because it has nothing to do with the subject you're trying to address. Stop being mean to yourself for enjoying a game that lots of other people also enjoy. That's really elitist, man. Accept that you're not better than the rest of the Tetris players in the world. Make peace with who you really are, dude.
@engynot
@engynot 9 месяцев назад
That's the whole point of his talk though. You can replace your boredom with a "distraction" (like Tetris) which everybody does (Social Media nowadays) or you can replace it with something meaningful and fulfilling. Talk to a musician that practices for 6 hours a day. You'll be surprised to know that they're not bored! AND they end up with something quite meaningful.. way more than hours lost on distractions.
