Why You Shouldn't Trust Calia Menethil: Dragonflight Lore Speculation

I would like to propose a theory: Calia has been quietly working to claim the throne of Lordaeron since the start, and it's part of a larger conspiracy to claim the soul of Azeroth - not for the Titans, not for Death, not for the Void, but for the Light.
Let me explain.

The only insight you can have about her resurrection is that it was a piece of legitimate bs writing. Light is not compatible with the undead status, as Alonsus Faol should well know from his unbearable pain. There's a difference between resurrection by the power of life and or light and necromancy. I'm well aware about the Primus telling Calia all the forms of resurrections are equal, but that's just his perspective. And lore-wise he had never dealt with the power of light and life.

Na it’s still their I just don’t think their going to do it yet. Light going bad is a mic drop moment for the franchise. It would be interesting if it was shown that Calia used these sleazy ways to gain the throne as you suggest. But the modern Blizzard writing prohibits any subtlety, intrigue, and conflict that paints the writers favorite characters in a bad light. And Calia is definitely the writers favorite character. There is no way they are gonna make her a bad guy. Despite she's acting like one. What they will do is to make a point about how she was right all along and the methods she employed were ultimately justified.

She's literally the only one who's tried to improve their quality of life and made an attempt to get them out from living in the literal sewers. She put her own life on the line to cleanse Lordaeron of the blight (something she had nothing to do with) and has put herself under intense scrutiny from both the humans and Forsaken to help reclaim their kingdom. But nah go off she doesn’t care about their wellbeing lol, everything about Calia has shown us she’s a noble trustworthy character. I don’t think there’s some 4D master plan here going on. It’d be a huge betrayal of all the development they’ve given Calia so far to just 180 her like that.
@Altrantis
@Altrantis 8 месяцев назад
@@Horazmodu The whole reason they had to live in the sewers was because of enroaching from the alliance. The sewers were safer. We know the humans in the alliance want to retake Lordaeron, so much so that they prefered to attack Lordaeron than to defend Teldrassil. Anduin himself said "retake Lordaeron" during the campaign. Calia has pushed for a series of policies that would make for a very easy campaign for the alliance should they attack again, while also reducing the territory the forsaken use. The only reason the alliance aren't even taking advantage of this is because they're still reeling from how damaging the 4th war was for everyone. The only reason the forsaken can go live on the surface is because the alliance is too afraid to reignite hostilities because they don't want to go through a 5th war.

Calia may be a problem but at the same time, I've said the same thing about Turalyon, the minute he showed back up, I said he was trouble. The fact he almost killed Illidan for rejecting the Light was a big clue and I don't buy that "gold to brown" eye change at all. The fact he's been on the throne of Stormwind for years now (what, about 10?) is dangerous because he's not going to want to give it back to Anduin, especially since the now-man King has lost his feeling for the Light, that it no longer trusts him (he doesn't trust himself but that's not the way Turalyon will see it). Genn's answer to Shaw was further confirmation for that feeling I've had since the start of Shadowlands. I don't trust the light, even with playing a few Light characters (a few Paladins, and at least three Light Forged Draenei). It's just getting too many questions about the power and what it does (corrupts absolutely???) So, yeah. I'm on that belief too (and someone else mentioned Pyromancer's videos about it and I am in agreement with him).
@francescoporcari8597

So you - as this YT - don't have a clue of the principle that regulates the Light power. All it requires for someone to use the Light is the faith that what she/he is doing is righteous. So the Light does not corrupt, but it bends and the good will of its user. It is literally the contrary of a dominating force. And just because X'era, Yrael and the SC are assholes it doesn't mean the Light is represented only by assholes. Alonsus faol is a good character. The problem with this kind of speculation is that they simply don't consider the characters acting out of good will and altruism. Everyone should be aiming for power. Also, cosmic forces are not factions with all the wielder of such power being aligned. Lady Liadrin, Aponi Brightmane and Anduin are all part of a conspiration?

To me I think they are forcing a story without putting the work in. If she is basically someone that wants to take over the throne for her own gains then they needed to fix the forsaken distrust of her. They didn't trust her not only because of what her brother did to them, not only because she didn't suffer the same as they did, but also because they moved past the monarchy. Arthas was their king and he slaughtered his people to force them to do whatever he wanted. When they broke free the human kingdoms that they were apart of saw them as monsters and wanted nothing to do with them. The forsaken wasn't saved because sylvanas was important to the high elves it was because she actually cared about them and decided if no one was going to support them then they'd do what they had to do to support themselves. So it makes absolutely no sense enough of the forsaken would care that she has a right to the throne because that Lorderon she was royalty for is dead and the forsaken doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. So if they wanted to do what they're doing now it shouldn't have been obvious she was going for the throne she should instead have been a diplomat and have more backing of leaders to her side. Have her working closely with blood elves and humans and getting the dark rangers to side with her to remember their high elf days and get to the point that Horde leaders such as Thrall. Baine, Ji, Gallywix, etc so there's push from the horde to make her leader because she works well with the alliance so there is more pressure for the forsaken to fall in line. But they rushed it and didn't have it be a slow burn. They just had her instantly apart of the council and then basically instantly becomes the leader of the forsaken. Now personally with how they did Calia I think they should have had her as the leader of the scarlet crusade. So essentially she comes in thinking she should isntantly be crowned, is denied and then she goes to the scarlet crusade who uses her as their greatest tool. Because with her they can say they have a right to Lorderon, that there is a type of undead that's acceptable, and gets them back in with the alliance who does care about monarchy and who callia had a lot of personal connections with. Now the scarlet crusade doesn't really care about her they just see her as being the perfect oppertunity to reach their goals of exterminating the forsaken, gaining control in the human kingdom, and then moving onto other enemies such as orcs and trolls. Callia would be a perfect villain for the forsaken because she may see herself as being like them and their rightful ruler but she doesn't understand she's not them and is just the acceptable undead until she steps out of line or they run out of use for her. Which if she's still alive then she'd probably question the light and she would go through similar journeys of anduin. Two royal kids who was taught in the ways of the light, one thrust into being the king and one chose to fight to become the queen only to realize their destiny they were prepared for since childhood isn't what they hoped for and they have to question it. Wow for a while has questioned destiny from how we stopped reorigination, how half the playerbase was meant to be titan robots, how Illidan was destined to be a light champion, how literally every threat that honestly should have been the end has been stopped. Wow's story is constantly "Yeah no we're fighting to change what's suppose to happen to us because we're not accepting that without a fight" and succeeding. So why not have Callia also go through that and her and Anduion having their stories linked to help each other out. Instead of you know "she's the undead queen, accept it (playerbase refuses to accept it) fine she's a villain now"

This comes off as just another salty forsaken player who prefers Genocide Waifu who mass murdered both Horde and Alliance (remember gates of Lordaeron and blight bombing your own soldiers) and is coming up with insane, convoluted, theories that would never actually play out in game. The simple truth? Sylvanas had too much dirty laundry, especially post BFA, to ever be truly redeemed. So, they replaced her with a character who can be built from the ground up to help the forsaken find greyer territory within the grand scheme of the lore. This allows Blizzard to write a more coherent story that involves the forsaken without immediately villain batting them because "that's not how they'd act". Calia is simply a "good" forsaken and some players don't like that, they want the forsaken to be able to torture people in their basement still with absolutely no consequences because they're a playable race. The story is simplifying itself by having all the races hold a primarily good stance, with actual neutral / evil factions playing the more antagonistic roles. It may come off as boring to many, but it helps Blizzard avoid the drama of villain batting playable races and thus making the players question their loyalties or feel guilty for playing a race they want. Calia is likely here to stay and she also very likely doesn't have 4D chess motivations as this video implies, people are just simply coming up with a variety of reasons to try to villain bat her because they miss Sylvanas.

so they did change the quest text after all, hehe. I was very surprised when I read it, "return to Queen Calia", wait, wait wait, Queen? Queen of WHAT? And no, I do not trust Calia. Or rather say, I do not trust the handling of her character. For me, it is quite clear that her original purpose was to be Sylvanas full replacement, like "Sylvanas but good and light". In order to make that possible, they made Sylvanas an outright villain and ruined her further development. Remember that initially, there was no option to side with Sylvanas at all in the war campaing, you were expected to betray her, and the loyalist option was added due to fan demand. I also think the mixed reception of Calia is the main reason they flip-flop between her not wanting to be a leader and wishing it, as it was intended for her to be the next undead ruler. As its core, for me it sums up to disliking the trope "Good Victims, Bad Victims" in which some people are more deserving of help and understanding for their pain than others because they are "good", if they are "bad" they should only get damnation. Sylvanas and Calia are both victims of undeath being forced upon them, but Sylvanas is a bad victim because she was dark and angry and Calia is good because she is nice and light, a "proper" victim, so she deserves sympathy and a glossy throne with it, even though is thanks to Sylvanas that the forsaken had a chance to reclaim their place in the world and rebuilt their lost lifes, and truly proved herself to be a leader. But Calia is a Menethil! she has never lead anything, but she deserves it! I guess being a good victim and having divine right of kings would do that for you. Alas, such a long comment hehe , but it was a really cool video, I liked very much!
@francescoporcari8597
@francescoporcari8597 8 месяцев назад
Now you are changing the effects for causes. While I dislike all the writing from Legion onward, I think that Sylvanas has always been a prick. Being a victim doesn't absolve you from any crime, and Sylvanas had plenty of them from WC3: FT. Calia is not defined by being a victim, but rather by her desire to help in the first place. Can she cultivate some ambition? Why not. The fact is that the Forsaken players loved Sylvanas because all of a sudden she placed them under the spotlight (Horde has always been mainly about orcs, like the Alliance is about men). Now the Forsaken are a secondary force, a shadow of what they were, and that's why people wants Sylvanas. The books can say what they want, from her action I judge Sylvanas, she never cared about anyone but herself and maybe Nathanos.

@@francescoporcari8597 Oh, Sylvanas has always been an angry, ruthless and dark individual, but her steadfast determination to survive at all cost against a world that wants her and the forsaken destroyed without mercy made her a very complex, intriguing and even inspirational person for many. A survivor against all odds. Calia is being granted sympathy by the narrative explicitly for not behaving as Sylvanas in the Before the Storm novel and the BfA expansion, which whole intent was to villainize her completely with no nuance (it has come to light that Alex Afrasiabi, serial abuser of women IRL who was Senior Creative Director in Blizzard, HATED her) Even in the Sylvanas novel Anduin dares to call her selfish and suicide-shame her for wanting to end her painful exiscente when she jumped off from Icecrown Citadel after fulfilling her vengeance and wanting peace, only to discover that more pain awaits everyone, but particularly to her, in the Shadowlands. It showed for her the forsaken were little more than tools. And BTW there wasn't anything wrong for her to pay eternamente for her crimes. An eternity of pain is not the future of everyone, but rather the future of those who deserved that. So, she was saving her ass. I understand at first glance her charcter may be inspiring, but if you look better she plays the victim, while she is the abuser, typically using the others, like Forsaken and Bloodelves, even blackmailing them when Lor'themar try to deny his help againt the Lich King.

@@francescoporcari8597 something that I wonder about Anduin if he will still be willing to play misery-poker with others now that he has been traumatized HARD for real in the War Within and his best course of action after that was to abandon civilized society , which in itself is a form of "social" suicide, and under that logic, "selfish" to his obligations and people. All of that, can also be attributed to the writing of Christie Golden, who has always written about such topics with a pseudo-evangelical tone, to the point that more than one person has called it a sort of kink of hers. (by the way, it has been proved that shaming people for attempting suicide only pushes them to try harder, do not do that.)

@@spiritualdreamer please rest assured IRL I would never blame anyone for attempting suicide. Regarding Anduin, unless they really come up with some upsetting out of camera event we missed, I don't think he should be traumatized. At the end of SL he wasn't emotionally or psychologically destroyed. I think that Anduin should be held responsible for a vacation, a king cannot leave his duty. Mind you at least he appointed a backup human resource to backfill his leave.

I hope Sylvanas puts an arrow through her, once Calia reveals her true self.

Nope, I think Blizzard is going to axe the factions, Lordaron and Gilneas and eventually Silvermoon, Stormwind, and Orgrimmar open to all players. I think this is all hinged on Calia.

Well it's her land and her people, so I don't see the problem with her reclaiming the throne. She actually never did anything wrong.

i was smitten the first time i saw calia in her undead form, she exerts this type of queen energy with the slight game of thrones'esc way of speaking, and sweet talking her way just like any queen should, she needs alot of support to win the cold dead hearts of the undead, shes the closest thing the alliance got to winning lordaeron back without actually invading, as this story develops more, i wish that she gets to actually see her wish to rule take form, a new queen would spice things up a bit for the story with how bland retail storytelling is in these past few years.

01:25 Lilian Voss have golden eyest just like Turalyon in cinematic with Illidan killing chandelier, maybe Lilian is "light brainwashed" to support Calia.
