I was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and put on mood stabilizers and antipsychotics for 5 years. Last year it was changed to ADHD. Off all those meds and now on a stimulant and doing great. But it’s depressing how quickly and easily I was diagnosed with a major mood disorder VS the runaround you’re put through when getting tested for ADHD.
@Sam_on_YouTube
@Sam_on_YouTube 2 года назад
That sucks. Those are some serious meds that can mess up people who need them when not balanced right for their brains. I can't imagine what it would do to someone who was misdiagnosed.
@RC-jz2em

@@Sam_on_RU-vid yeah. But I have a friend who was also misdiagnosed as bipolar and was getting ECT treatments. She also recently was evaluated and turns out, it’s ADHD. Her short term memory is gone for absolutely no reason. Comparatively, I got off easy. 🙁

I am so sorry that this happened to you. Bipolar is the default diagnosis for women it seems. Whether it's ADHD or CPTSD etc. "experts" tend to go to bipolar first. This is definitely the patriarchy at play and negatively affects so many people.

Inattentive ADD here, It’s a curse and isn’t worth the occasional ability to hyperfocus on a deadline. I work a skilled trade and it is a struggle because I lose tools and material on a daily basis and constantly lose time retracing my steps. I hate it. :/
@starshot5172
@starshot5172 2 года назад
Does it have a good side?
@dstinnettmusic
@dstinnettmusic 2 года назад
@@starshot5172 the hyperfocus can come in handy, but generally that is from situations I let my ADD get me into in the first place. Example: I neglect to write a paper until a day or so before it is due, and craft a masterpiece of research and writing over the course of like 8 hours. This was a constant issue in high school. The flip side where this did actually work out for me was in college, I had a few online classes, and this was in 2011-2012, so there were no online lectures, it was just a syllabus, the textbook and whatever materials the teacher provided. So….on more than one occasion I pulled all nighters and just chunked out weeks and weeks worth of work. So….hyperfocus does come in handy when you can convince yourself to wield the power…but like everything else it has drawbacks, like being so engrossed in a game, book, whatever grabs you and that makes you late for something important. Like all mental health issues that people face, it isn’t my fault that I am wired this way but it is my responsibility to manage myself as best I can and not be a burden and to avoid hurting people as much as I can.

Yes. I came from a wealthy background and it certainly helped. It was still really hard, especially since I was undiagnosed until after lawschool. And I'm definitely not wealthy now, as it turns out lucrative careers in law are not really compatible with poorly controlled ADHD. But I'm definitely greatful for that privilege and recognize that it is an unfair system that my career is actively working to change.

Adhd can come in different severity’s. Just because 1 person had mild depression but was convinced it was the most serious thing ever does not mean its the same as people that lay on the floor all day until thel kill themselfes because every day is so uncomfortable and feels like being extra sick and no drive usw

Despite the fact I struggle living a "normal" every day life. My parents didn't believe in mental health disorders in general growing up so I didn't ever see someone as a kid. However, by the time I was 25 I had reached a point where I felt I would lose my job if I didn't see someone and get some help. My childhood coping mechanisms just did not translate to adulthood. After seeing a therapist briefly that then moved on, I was fortunate to find a very atuned therapist that evaluated me for ADHD and gave me my official diagnosis. While meds and therapy have definitely changed my life, it's still a battle I fight every single day and often feel like I'm losing.

I'm going to be a stickler, because word choice is so impactful. Some people NO LONGER STRUGGLE with their ADHD, not "some people no longer HAVE ADHD". It may no longer negatively impact their life, but they don't cease to have it. That's a dangerous notion to spread, accidentally or otherwise, as it is frequently used to demean and downplay the impact ADHD has on a person, if not completely refute its existence.

I never thought I had ADHD until I was diagnosed. I thought I might have OCD. I'm not hyperactive. I tend to hyperfocus much more often and have inattentive type ADHD. I later learned that's not uncommon, especially among women (though I'm a man). And many of my symptoms do match ADHD and they match it much better than OCD.

I'm diagnosed with adhd since childhood, but some doctors I saw disagreed with that diagnosis. Eventually, the last doctor I saw for it said, "I grew out of it." When you read those symptoms off, I keep saying nope, nope, nope. It took 8 years, but even my wife agrees now I don't have ADHD. I'm certain that I am misdiagnosed, and I think I actually have high functioning autistism. It's very similar, but I don't have trouble organizing or writing, no depression and my short-term memory is great.

ADHD is only a problem in school environments in my opinion. What I did was use it as my superpower. I now do a job I love and find engaging, it's active field work so I keep my jitters away. And I cycle 300km a week. I also smoke a little weed so that helps too when I have to be less hyper with no outlet, I don't get high I just have a few tokes and it's enough to cause a medicinal effect. I didn't get here without consistent effort though, I'm 28 and only really getting into my career, I'm behind a little sure but it's not a race. You try working 45hours in a physical job, cycle 300km and then walk your dog and do everything else that every normal person does. Let's see someone "Normal" do that! I do struggle in other aspects but it's just different. I'm am happy to report I've been off my 86mg of concerta daily for ten years, I had to drop college alright but it was that or suicidal depression, I think I chose correctly.

Natural remedies are always better than big pharma. Much respect for getting off the adhd meds. I've been off Adderall for about 5 years now and I'm so happy about it. I use weed but usually only at night time. Kratom helps too just don't take too much because it's addictive

Man I've soo much more to add but alot has happened in 28 years of living with ADHD. Main things are do what you love, be in an environment that's works to your advantage. While ADHD does explain things I've never used it as an excuse to not try harder. Just do your best and you will fail, but get back up and try again. Next time you'll do it better. I'm here if anyones struggling to cope, I know what it's like and it's tough.

@@ryanmalinFair play, I used to remember yhe comedown from concerta, and I'd be Bouncing off the walls for days only to be dragged back down. don't get me wrong either though, I wouldn't have finished school without it or the support from my mom and friends, but it started to turn on me. I tried to change to stratera and it sent me right over the edge. Coffee to calm down and pay attention is what I really use. 5-10 strong coffees daily. I literally have a budget for coffee. The smoke is just for me to calm the thoughts down but it doesn't help that much in getting things done, caffeine is a stimulant that works with better with my body. It gives the underdeveloped part of my brain a boost that allows me to pull my focus back to the correct task, I still drift off but it's normally only a fraction of what it would be without coffee.

I kept a paintball field clean as a summer job, and active field work was great for me too. Being in a forest, having some form of purpose (keeping the are clean and brambles away). When I do non-physical work, I get massive existential dread, regrets, and I get really damn tired. Probably the only way I can be happy every day, is being outside with a group. Without a group of friends, people with ADHD become severely depressed and deprived of drive

Most of us who are late diagnosed have had plenty of symptoms when we were kids but got missed for different reasons. For example, when I was a kid "girls couldn't have ADHD" and if you had a reasonable IQ "You couldn't have ADHD." So no, not all that high. And many of us are not on meds.
@anadoarable
@anadoarable 2 года назад
Not true. The DSM-V requires that in a diagnosis for children above 12 and adults, at least 5 symptons of the different criteria it specifies, must have been present before the age of 12 - NOT that a medical diagnosis existed before the age of 12. This update specifically reflects the advances in research that have established that symptons tend to present later for girls (12, for hormonal reasons), and that hyperactivity doesn't have to manifest on the outside (being disruptive, etc). The only people who enjoy ADHD medication, are people without ADHD, who are abusing it as a drug, not a treatment for a disorder that impairs their day to day.

@@sumdude132 no worries - I think this is the type of exchange that needs to happen regarding ADHD. A lot of older professionals (psychiatrists and psychologists), have a blind spot regarding how ADHD was changed in the DSM-V (and why). In addition, because there is much more social conversation about the topic, it's a lot easier for people without ADHD to have a diagnosis "script", so that they will have access to medication. It is being both over-diagnosed and under-diagnosed (the later mostly in women and POC).
