Why You Would Want a Makarov

Have you been considering a Makarov recently? Do you want to know more about it? It’s actually a simple design and such a historic piece that it would be hard to not get one for your collection eventually.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the Soviet Union was looking for a new sidearm for military and police. They adopted the Makarov pistol in 1951. From then, some other countries made their own verisons and copies of it. Bulgaria was one country who made an almost exact copy of the Russian Makarov. This Bulgarian Mak is what is featured in the video and what you could find at military surplus dealers currently.

Back in the 90s, everyone bought a 9X18 Hungarian Feg for their wife/girlfriend, just to discover they couldn't rack the slide because of the stiff recoil spring. And they discovered recoil was more than a 9mm Glock 19. Sales dropped off significantly, until more collectable Makarovs arrived. Then you got a total different kind of buyer.

I own a russian made Mak that I have carried for years. It is not my main carry gun but has spent many hours on my person and by my bed. It is rugged, reliable, and accurate. People often point out the tiny sights, but this weapon lines up with the target remarkably well. I have owned several PPKs and this is my second Makarov. The Mak is s better gun. It eats any ammo I feed it from surplus junk to all defense ammo I have tried. The Walthers were both ammo finicky. And much less comfortable to shoot. Yes, the Russians developed the Mak by studying the Walther. But strip down both guns and you will see the Mak is not a copy. They improved a lot and flat out changed some things entirely. Is the gun dated by modern standards? It sure is. There are countless better options available today. That said, the Mak is still a solid choice for self defense.

I learned many years ago from an article in Hand loading Digest about how to trim 9x19 brass down to .700 and make 9x18 rounds with a .312 bullet. As long as the case mouth is sized correctly and proper bullets are used-the cut down 9x19 brass will fire form to chamber dimensions and be perfectly safe and very reloadable. This is what ive been running through my Mak for years and quite accurate. Cast your own .312 bullets and you never need worry about having 9x18mm. People who say Maks are unreliable dont know what they're talking about, its a very good choice for CCW when wearing light clothing. I hate the Bakelight grip though, made my own walnut grips

Somebody here mentioned that it is just a bigger copy of the Walther PP . At first glance yes but internally it is way more simplyfid in a pretty genius way and has about 20 parts less then the Walther PP by keeping the general same functions. Way more robust design and better for miltary service.And i have to say that even as a Walther PP/ PPK fanboy.

Excellent video and very interesting pistol... I chose the Tokarev over the Makarov. The Tokarev cartridge is much more interesting and powerful than 9x18mm. The Makarov sound's ballistics are between the 380 Auto and 9mm Luger. All that said, you've made me rethink picking one up. Prices are definitely rising, so better not to wait much longer to get one. Agree, Atlantic Firearms is a good source!

Really the only major downside functionally is the sites. You can put good sites call them but you have to dovetail the front of the slide. XS used to sell a set of sites where the rear sight was already sized for the pre-existing rear dovetail. It was their dot Express style sights.

I own a Bersa Tunder. Probably very similar. The reason I bought the Bersa was RU-vid reviews and the Beretta 9FS I was interested in had been sold. It's an OK pistol, but .380 is more expensive than 9mm. For comparison sake, I would like a Makarov over a Bersa any day. At the time there were no comblock area pistols for sale. I bought the Bersa Thunder + plus less than $200. It works for me. Its my car gun until I get something better or Soviet.

Modern gun companies can learn a lot from the design of these. Simple and safe to carry. Too many guns designed for concealed carry are not very safe. Often having no manual safety. These things decock and lock up tight when the safety is on. Then when you do flip it off the first trigger pull is heavy. That is perfect for a carry gun. It wont go off because it was hit at just the wrong angle or part of your jacket worked its way into the holster or whatever nonsense can happen.
@joshklaver47
@joshklaver47 2 месяца назад
The reason most carry pistols don't have manual safeties is that people simply don't want them. They want to be able to draw and pull the trigger, with nothing to stop the pistol from firing. As long as you're using a decent quality and correctly-fitted holster, you really don't need a manual safety on a pistol.
@plaid13
@plaid13 2 месяца назад
@@joshklaver47 Yeah most are far too lazy to take the time to train properly in trade for more safety.
@joshklaver47
@joshklaver47 2 месяца назад
@@plaid13 There's nothing unsafe about carrying a pistol without a manual safety. Keep it in a holster and keep your finger off the trigger when it's out, and you'll be fine. That has become the norm for a reason.
@plaid13
@plaid13 2 месяца назад
@@joshklaver47 So you are saying a gun with a manual safety is no more safe than one without? Lets face it in the real world things are not always perfect. Someone might be half asleep at the end of a long day and make a mistake. Maybe the holster is a few years old and a bit deformed and has a small gap and lets something into it that shouldnt be there. Maybe a loose string worked its way into the holster from an old shirt or jacket. Yes it has become the norm for them not to have a safety. But ... People still get shot int he leg by their guns without a safety do to mistakes.

As you say, it is a AK of pistols; it is rock solid reliable, easy to shoot and accurate. Changed the grip that allows me to drop the mag with a thumb lever. Using HP ammo, at 28 ounces, it is my every day carry gun. In the old days, there were lots of Russian training videos that showed variable training tip. Better than a Walther PP types, a good solid steel hard use pistol by design. Buy practice ammo by the 500 rds+ but only take what you want to shoot to the range. It goes fast and fun.

Why not? Honestly the only thing that’s truly meh about the Makarov is the heel release, but even that isn’t that big of a deal because most gunfights are over in 6-8 rounds, and many slim modern compacts have similar capacity. People who say the Makarov is bad for CC always just say some variation of “nuh-UH…!” You could do better, but “not good” just isn’t true.

I stocked up on ammo when it was cheap I have a Walther ppk also which I find uncomfortable to shoot because of the hammer bite Accuracy is about the same but the Makarov is much more dependable The only downside with the Makarov I think being a sold steel pistol is that it is rather heavy for its size because of that might not be mine first choice for concealed carry but with a good holster definitely possible
