Why You Wouldn't Beat Multiple Opponents

If you believe that you could bet multiple opponents in a fight - think again. Why not? All about that in this Martial Arts Explored episode.
Unfortunately, not everyone who practices martial arts realizes that it's close to impossible, yet even after years of training many still believe that they could easily beat multiple attackers. This belief could be fatal if such a person would actually be attacked by more than one person. To bring clarity to the subject of multiple attackers, I’ve interviewed two self defense experts: Bruno Orozco and Paul Sharp, on whos thoughts this video is mainly based and with their help we will take a look at The Reality of Multiple Attackers.

This is the last editorial I am making to sum up the knowledge I've gained through this last year. Now on Wednesday I am finally flying to US to start my intensive MMA and BJJ training so much more live footage and interviews are to come. Very excited about that and I'll see you all soon.

Have you ever read Miyamoto Musashi's work The Book of Five Rings? Musashi was a legendary swordsman of 16th-17th c. Japan. It's a good read that I think every serious martial artist should read. He describes different fight strategies, many of which you addressed in this video like herding your opponent to a lesser disadvantage for them, greater advantage for you and talks about technical fight dynamics and how you can even apply such philosophies to how you lead your life. Sometimes he's credited with putting into words the path of bushido, especially with his work The Dokkodo, or Way of Walking Alone. Good luck in your journey.

@will-oftheconvictionsforge 4 года назад
Not really. What the movies got right is mobility and instinct but what they never address is that: if you want to win you have to hit to kill. You don't have to have overwhelming force, but you have to have fear and death on your side. These are the reasons why animals are so dangerous or why men that go to war are traumatized or flee from the enemy.

@Alambusha Shukla speaking as a small guy who had lots of bullies growing up, but didn't have those bullies after he learned ITF Taekwondo and started fighting back, no, I wouldn't WANT to be in a position with multiple people attacking me. BUT I studied a real system of martial arts, not "combat sports", so when multiple people DID attack me, because they were BULLIES, I knew how to win against them. You can't wrestle multiple people on the ground, so of course the UFC/combat sports people think you can't defend yourself in such a situation. Study a real martial art -- for self defense, not competition -- and you will learn how to do it.
@sephikong8323
@sephikong8323 4 года назад
The best martial arts for self defense is HEMA, especially if you carry your weapon with you. Yes it is not very easy to fit your sword/weapon of your choice with you at all time, but having a weapon with a longer reach and knowing how to utilise it is key in a real situation (unless the opponent has a gun and is pointing you even before you can take out your weapon, but nothing can help you except cooperate if someone got a gun). Plus weapons, especially slashing weapons, carry a big intimidating factor with them and thus just drawing your weapon could put an end to the situation before it could escalate any further. It is still best to avoid conflict at all costs because it is always risky, but having a close quarter weapon and having trained to use it is probably your best bet if you ever get into a sticky situation

When I used to practice kick boxing. The technique against multiple attackers was to get away as fast as possible. If you were surrounded, try to make a hole thru the weakest link and get the hell out. If you can't, try to used one of the attackers as human shield against the others, but always try to get out as soon as you can. And, definitely, use anything you can get as a weapon. This seems to be the only real comment here. I have no doubt that people have done this but reading the comments makes me laugh. It's funny how many Steven Seagals' watched this video. Btw, I've been jumped too. Was completely drunk and the first punch, which came from my side, sent me to the ground. The rest started kicking me. I would like to claim that maybe if I were not drunk and ready I might have had a chance with 1 or 2, but not 5-6. I was lucky someone stepped in and stopped the fight as they were probably going to kill me. Also, people who jump others tend to be cowards, but they will be as vicious as possible with their friends around.

@@digitalintent My situation is gonna some like movie shit but we all know how dumb young middle and high schoolers are. It was this stupid little turf war bs that our towns used to engage in since long before I was even of born and inadvertantly got sucked into for living on this side of the highway vs that side of the highway. I got cornered in a walk way and was forced up against the wall with multiple people kicking and punching at me. I maybe got one good unconfirmed punch in right before but there was absolutely nothing I could do but curl up in fetal position facing the wall and try to guard my chest and head as I got stomped out. After that they left. Lucky I was just left with only bruises on my back and legs. I have a few friends who faced similar attacks that actually got bones broken and sent them to the hospital. I can say though, as far as I heard, it was never people from my pen town to go into their town to wreak havoc. There was nothing to do in their town as they were a dry township so they would cross that bridge over the highway and squat somewhere aggressively. Granted my incident was in their "territory" but I shouldn't be getting jumped for just going to Dunkin Donuts. Suffice to say, I would highly not recommend getting into a fight like this at all and especially out numbered is even more of a no no.

Digital Intent you are an idiot if you think you can‘t fight 1vs2 or 1v3. You have been to the fitness gym to many times. People on the streets learn to foght aggressivly and hit fast and powerful in the neck or in the chin. No fucking jumping around like a girl and trying to do low kicks and all that girly shit. 3v1 I have fought for my life and I won at the end with many bruises. Once you truly learn how to fuck someone up in the streets you can fuck up 2-3 people the thing is you won‘t learn it from mix martial arts. You gotta punch them all in the neck and in the chin fast because they think you are going to jump around or they are going to manhandle you. You gotta be quick and powerful neck hits + chin hits and you win. No fucking gut hits and low kicks and all this shit. Quick + Powerful street style is the only way to win. I have been there and I have seen that shit I have known a dude he could fight 3 people easily been to prison over 22 years. Fought in there almost everyday with murderes, rapists, pedophiles, scammers, boxers. That shit comes from street experience no gym is going to show you since it‘s not their style to fight off 2-3 opponents

He showed me pictures of my grandfather in the ring, that was a surprise for me, I had never heard about that side of my grandfather in my then 25 years of life. I asked my grandfather about it. He told me that it was true about the short boxing career he had but nothing else. 6 months later my grandfather was battling cancer and it was my turn to take care of him for the night. So he and I talked for hours and he told me the complete story about his youth, early boxing career, and the troubles he faced. Including the time he fough off 6 dudes. He told me that the secret was to enrage yourself and be like a tiger. To hit really fast and move really fast. After he fought off those dudes they came back the next day and shot him in the chest. But he survived. He even showed me the bullet wound and the bullet. Yes, he still had the bullet inside of him. It was a round small ball you could feel if you pushed your fingers to the left side of his chest. So suddently the story became real for me and totally believable. So all in all , this video and the advices it gives, reminds me alot of what my grandfather told me and gives a more detailed explanation of what he meant about ''being like a tiger'.

What it actually means is that you must not use your martial arts skill to bully or provoke or disturb someone or commit crimes like extortion, robbery, beat up your spouse etc. It does not mean that you must not attack when your life is being threatened. While this works in theory, it wouldn't actually work in practice. You, and your fast opponent would have to be so much faster than the rest of your opponents, that you'd literally have to be sprinting for an extended period of time to make enough distance between the rest of the pack. That would also mean that after that first person, everyone else is also relatively similar in speed, so you'd have a mob on your heels. Also how many times do you think you can actually sprint between locations, and then still have enough energy left over to really fight it out with someone? Then you're just gonna do it again? The only way this has any chance of working is if you have a weapon - a force multiplier. If you don't, then you're just going to die tired.

I'm always a little sceptical when people say to beat multiple attackers you need to take them out quick by hitting the throat, groin, etc. These targets are generally hard enough to hit in a one on one fight and having additional opponents typically limits your options (or at least it does in the re-enactment battles I've participated in) and I'm bold enough to suggest that if you can't land an attack one on one you're going to struggle to land that attack against multiple opponents.

4 is feasible at once. Honestly their can be a lot more than 4, It really depends on a lot of factors: how well you can isolate each individual attacker, if you’re able to limit how many are coming at you at once (although not entirely realistic; similar to the hallway seen in old boy), how much pain tolerance the individuals involved have, relative skill of the attackers vs the one they’re attacking; and nobody likes to admit this but honestly most importantly, the relative size, strength, and athleticism of the person who’s being attacked vs the attackers. If you’re attacking someone who’s big and strong it’s a lot harder to hurt them and theoretically their attacks will do more damage, nobody wants to admit that point.

I can only speak for myself but I think it's almost impossible to deal with multiple attackers. I have a lot of Martial arts training, I am a kickboxing coach and I used to own an MMA gym. Years ago when I was much younger and stronger than I am now at 55 years old, I was confronted by three drunk assholes while leaving a sports bar, I was with my wife and I had no illusions of my chances against 3 guys so I tried to walk away and as I did one of them tried to hit me so I hit him, hard and knocked him out, at that point the other 2 beat the hell out of me and the third guy I knocked out woke up pissed off and joined in. I tried to fight back and protect my wife who was trying to help me but was only getting in the way. When the police came there were 3 of them and one of me so the cop arrested me, but he saw through their bullshit and drove around the corner and let me go, telling me to go straight to the hospital. I got 12 stitches over my right eye and was bad bruised up for about 10 days but I feel lucky I did not get brain damage. No martial art can prepare you for this kind of situation, but my training did help me with movement and slipping punches and I knew not to go down or it would have been much worse. My advise is to avoid these situations at all cost, a bruised ego is much better than brain damage, just walk away.

It was not a pleasant experience at all, I would not have fought if the first guy did not swing at me but he did so I reacted and I paid the price. I would advise just waking away, even if your pride is bruised, they cracked my jaw too and to this day it hurts if I go to the dentist I can't hold it open for very long before I have to close it.

That would work with similar effectiveness as a punch (although not quite as fast and one would have to be very careful to not expose themselves). The other technique that might be effective against multiple attackers is put one in a choke hold and hold him as a shield. Threaten to kill him if the group does not yield. I think the effectiveness will really depend on who the attackers are and what mood they are in.

Not true. This is like not letting someone know you have a gun. Best way to fight multiple attackers is to not fight multiple attacker. Where I went to school, that idea that most bullies don't actually know how to fight is false, most people knew how to fight, at least the basics was a given. With multiple people if they don't think you can fight, they are probably going to engage and at that point they are all attacking you. On the opposite spectrum, letting your attackers know that you're not only able to fight but you're willing to really hurt someone (breaking bones, gauging eyes, slamming heads against a wall) has the potential to deter conflict. People fight in groups for the security of having someone at their back so there's less risk of getting hurt that bad. If you can make any of them believe that there's a serious chance that they can really get hurt they might hesitate. Confidence can do a lot.

The few times I've gotten into a situation with multiple attackers, it was tense but not as complicated as you think it is. Perhaps we are over thinking what will actually happen with multiple attackers, groups and crowds of people are not that intelligent when acting together. The only thing that really agrees with my personal experience and your theory is that a person needs to be open to deploy whatever response fits the situation. I've attacked the first attacker, I've done ikkyo in response to an attack, I preempted an attack with a verbal threat, and I've also used my own weapon as a pre emptive threat without using it. The point is, you don't know what's going to happen, and no amount of training will tell you what will happen. Not even the "real self defense" instructors. It's often misleading when saying one is real and one is not. The truth is, no one knows until it happens. I agree that conceptually that aikido randori is a good theoretical starting point. But you have to expect the unexpected and be decisive in your action once you move. I live in Texas, so my reality is a gun fight. lol. For real, road rage or bar fights usually end up with a gun fight. So no martial art, MMA or TMA, is going to prepare you for being shot at. It's all a wash at that point, and you'll need other training. Like how to shoot a gun during stress environments. Even then, it's a very high risk situation. Good luck!

I see a lot of problems in using a gun (presumably a pistol?) for self defence, not least of which is where is it located on your body/how long does it take to reach for, unholster, aim and accurately fire a weapon vs someone who has you within punching or stabbing range, what kind of weapon retention training is done to make sure you/your family dont end up shot or abducted using your own weapon, how often and easy is it to train these skills so that they remain sharp enough to be useful, at what point in a situation do decide you want to draw a loaded weapon on someone and escalate it to the highest possible stakes it can go, trained police usually hit a person with one in five bullets so are you ready to take responsibility for potentially hitting someones child or loved one with any of those other four stray bullets and ruining another bystanders life? Came across this. BJJ guy. I agree very much with this. When I played football, I was one of the big guys, and we did this drill where everyone is in a big circle with one person in the middle. The coach points to a person, and they try to tackle the guy in the middle. The coach knew I would fare better than the smaller guys, so he was sending them at me quickly. First guy, down easily... pivot to next person off to the side, down and a bit off-balance at the angle... boom -- guy from my left side hits me and staggers me... then the coup de grace, guy from directly in back of me takes me down hard. I get up... blam, on the ground... get up... repeat until I'm lying on my back gasping for air. That taught me that no matter how badass you are, you don't want to engage multiple threats. I was actually looking for a video on movement using a firearm against multiple attackers having firearms. I don't think many people caught this, but the Punisher executes this awesome sequence of foot movement just in about a 6 foot diameter circle designed to delay the threats' ability to get aim while he just takes them down one at a time. If anyone knows more about that kind of training, please let me know. I'm just blown away at how effective that tactic probably is. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sJ4R0UWpMig.html

As a survivor of RL attacks of 5 vs 1 back in Jr. High school this is all amazingly good information. I was attacked while in school by 5 kids that bullied me for over 2 years straight. Every day they would attack me by trying to overwhelm me and get me down into the floor and nearly kick me to death. My father ended up putting me into Kung Fu and I had a great instructor that told me the truth right from the start your going to lose if you have to fight against those numbers. So he said simply first try and avoid and escape, if not possible find who you can punch to make an escape. If escape is impossible then expect to lose, but make them regret ever trying to harm you. At first it sucked for over a year, but over time I got better I learned how to predict their moves and I learned how to block what areas were vital. Then I started breaking bones countering and yes I lost ALOT of the fights but every broken bone I gave them I counted as a victory. Long story short it all ended one day in the men's bathroom. I was snuck up on by them and had my face rammed into a cement wall 3 times and had my nose shattered! Then I was thrown down to the floor and had a switch blade aimed at my heart! I was lucky my trainning from King Fu had taught me to block blades. So I attempted the same move I had done in practice a thousand times and managed it...but it had stabbed into the back side of my hand! That was when I took advantage of his shock that I did that and grabbed his arm pinned it under my knee and then shattered it making sure his knife was controlled and unusable. It happend so quick I had not noticed the blade cut out of my hand and that I was bleeding heavily from a chunk of skin missing from my hand. That was when his friends all decided to start kicking me. But I knew if I released the leaders arm with the knife I would be dead so I kept him pinned and accepted the blows and screamed for help. At that moment luck was on my side and the freaking principle walked in!! The leader was expelled the kids friends all given suspensions and after that the leader as far as I knew never used his arm again. My nose was flat shattered and required 2 surgeries to fix it. Which I couldn't afford nor my parents untill 13 years later. I self stiched my own hands flesh back on because I was taught how by my mother. I had several bruses all over my entire body, but nothing else was broken since I blocked my vitals. All in all I survived and this man's video is a 100% accurate. If your in a position with multiple attackers RUN!

I can break baseball bats with my shins and can grapple decently against heavy weight grapplers ( i lose 8/10 times with heavy weights but thats good odds considering its with actual grapplers and I can even out grapple a heavy weight who sucks without my hands). If you’re a criminal, you best be in shape because you’re gonna get into lotsss of fights. I put so many hours into getting prepared for these moments specifically. Grappling will get you killed in a fight with multiple opponents. Trained boxers hit harder than any martial artist. Trained boxers know many techniques you don’t see in the ring including head butting and eye poking. 52 blockers know how to make wing chun effective. I studied martial arts off and on for forty years and I am of Seido Juku and I wouldn’t want to fight a 52 blocker other than life of death and I have quite a bit of judo.

Lannel Bishop no a muay thai kick (2.3k lbs)from a pro is harder than Tysons punch (1.4k lbs) , plus its bigger area and they are also used in real combat and can cover distance better. Go to a muay thai gym this week and either ask to get kicked lightly or touch one of their shins. Its crazier than boxing. Boxing is second on the list. Boxers dont deliberately make their bones harder. Thai fighters do. Google it and/or go to a gym and live it first hand. I’m no proof.

The key to survive a fight with multiple attackers is hit and run tactics. That's the closest you get. Pacing your opponent so that you only have to face one at a time and blocking. Never let yourslef be surrounded. And this is almost impossible to do if you fight against other fighters. Fighing multiple attackers who only rely on numbers because they don't know how to fight is very much possible. Or am I just so very lucky to witness it multiple times now. Experience is a key factor to most martial arts arguments. Most haven't experienced their martial arts working so they think it's impossible or just not good.

Honestly, I think the most important thing is to have around double or more the combined power level of the attackers. If one squats 225, and another squats 315, then you should squat 540+ to reasonably assume you can take them both. Not an exact science, but it's a starting point. You're going to need stamina to finish both of them too, unless you can one-shot them. Last but not least, there's skill.... but I still think general power level is probably the bigger factor up to a point. A gun still works best lol.
@yaboiyaboy9980
@yaboiyaboy9980 4 года назад
It really depends on the attackers. If you are facing two meatheads that have never taken a punch, then yes it's very possible that your punches will surprise them and they will back off even if they are stronger than you. But if they are determined to beat you it will be almost impossible no matter how strong you are. You could be beating one guys face in and the other guy will just jump on your back and go for the choke hold... And then while you try to stop the choke his friend start punching you in the stomach and the face. So it's very situational. Sometimes you can take on 20 guys if you surprise them and they are a bunch of weaklings. But if you take that out of that equation and just assume that even two people really want to kill you and will not stop unless you knock them out first, your not going to win unless you are a serious badass

Khechari pretty much, if a little man was to plan to take down a a guy twice or three and half the size of his, well you already know who has more mass power, so it’s like a David and Goliath situation, but what If the little man had some fighting training experience? It really depends, but we’re talking about a life and death situation, not friendly competition Oh and it would come in handy knowing what weak points to hit

Fought a lot when I was younger. I was a finisher, not a starter. 2 fights were 1v1. All others were 3v1 and up to 7v1. Never lost. In fact, ended up chasing the 7 down the street. Minimal martial Arts training and wrestled for a long time. The strategies explained are accurate. You cant stop for a second and have to be very aware of your surroundings. Hit the ground twice in the group and always took someone down with me, rolled and used them as a block to gain position. I did get hit quite a bit, but they were calculated. Taking a loss to take advantage. If you can, take the small guy first and use him as a ram into the bigger guys. It's not easy to catch a grown man, even the small ones. It delays advances. Juking and backpeddling are essential. Know how to dodge a punch and use the opposer's momentum, either to incapacitate or to move them into the next guy. Lastly, if you get enraged when you get hit, you will lose. You need to get calmer. You need to be able to read and react. Rage and anger make mistakes. If you are one of the few that get more calm when hit, you probably notice everything slows down around you. It's a rare trait and it definitely saved my life. Also, don't fight. It's not worth it. Never started one. Ever.

@chimericalical

I’ve been attacked by two people at once and “won” that fight. But I would never engage 2 or more at once willingly. Two guys ran up, split, and swung at me from both my left and right. I dropped and rolled forward and did a 180 out of the roll so I could see them. They apparently hit each other while I did this... but was kinda rolling on the ground so I didn’t see it too well. They then tried to surround me again. This was in an open parking lot, I kept moving so that our position made a straight line (making sure that one of them was in between me and the one furthest away). Eventually I saw an opening for a side kick while they were lined up. So, I hit the one closest to me as hard as I could pushing him back towards the other. My plan to push one into the other didn’t happen, but the other one had to move out the way. Which is when I ran towards some benches and jumped over the bench putting the bench between me and them. 2nd guy jumped the bench after I did while the 1st guy ran around it, so I side stepped the bench and pushed 2nd guy (while he was airborne) into the 1st guy, then stepped forward with a hard side kick to the 2nd guy as he was colliding with the 1st guy. And I saw a large stick on the ground out the corner of my eye, so I went for the stick as they were falling. As they’re getting up, I whacked one of them (don’t remember which) with the stick as hard as I could in the ribs, then moved back to the other side of the bench to put it between me and them again. That’s when they left. I was lucky they weren’t terribly smart and didn’t really know how to fight too well. Also that I found that stick.

Regarding the "Run-away" concept. I've always been a big fan of fighting Anime. And one of my favorite series always was the Virtua Fighter adaptation. Because, even if the protagonist was so strong and fast (besides otherwose being really goofy and stuff, but hey that's relatable protag for you:D) when he started teaching a bullied boy, the first thing he taught him was not hitting techniques or grapples, but how to run fast and wide. And this was so awesome. It's not just about 'hitting really hard'. It's about protecting your life. Not your ego. They also did a, what I thought, great comparison. The hotheaded female lead asked, why the protag does not teach the kid striking and kicking, to overpower the opponents. Which yeah, is valuable. But Akira juat responds with: "well and if the opponent just pulls the gun, you are done for anyway". I mean yes, running away when someone aimes a gun at you, you have very little chance of success. But than again, if you are a good runner, are able to surprise your opponent or whatever chances are you are more eager to survive than just standing there and try to fight the guy. Also, for me the lesson was also more about, what if the opponent draws weapons in general? Well, even than. You better run, that's what. Now, maybe this is really simplistic and there are many things that go into that kind of stiff. But I was really amazed by how they treated that subject in such an Anime regardless. Telling kids, that not only is it ok, to run away sometimes, but that good stamina and speed are also key factors when you want to learn the basics about fighting. At least that is what I took from that^^

I studied martial arts for almost 20 years, was in more than a few fights where I was against multiple people, but never more than 5. If it was two or three people, I usually walked away without a scratch, but any more than that, I definitely took a beating. Was always able to walk away on my own, but I needed a few days to heal up after afterward. The most useful lesson I ever learn though, I learned at a hospital. No one ever wants to fight a crazy person, and no one ever wants to fight a naked person. Speaking from personal experience, it's a lot easier to fake being crazy than it is to fake being naked. Slapping yourself in the face and ranting about insane crap has kept me out of more fights then I ever got in. Edit: because I forgot to add it, and in case anyone asks, definitely the mobility. In the few times where I was up against that many people, mobility, and using my opponents as shields to protecting me from getting overwhelmed, those are the two things that saved my life. Well, maybe not save my life, but definitely saved me from getting messed up any worse. Edit 2: also, forget honor and chivalry. The videos right, it's not a duel. If you were in that situation, and you can't get out, and you can't get away, striking first and hardest is is the only option you have left. Like I stated earlier, I've had a lot of training and practice in this, so in my situations, I felt comfortable taking the fight to them. If you don't feel comfortable, then I recommend the wise words of Jack Sparrow. Never be afraid to fight to run away. Edit 3: I came into this world kicking and screaming, covered in someone else's blood. I have no problem going out that way.

I think Dark Souls address this well. In most video games, the game creates the illusion of fighting multiple opponents when in reality they basically line up for you to handle them one by one while most of them just kinda stand and watch. But in Dark Souls, they won’t take turns. Even if you’re a high level and have good gear, it’s still possible to die to low-level and weak enemies if you get surrounded by a group of them. They won’t take turns so fighting multiple enemies becomes astronomically more difficult the more there are. I like how the Painted World proved this; normally, an unarmored Hollow is easy to kill and does very little damage. But in the Painted World, a high level area, there’s nothing but groups of Hollows for the most part. But it’s a tough area for a lot of players because they swarm you in groups of three or four with their torches and swords and even though each one is weak by themselves, together they can be very dangerous in groups.

Fighting multiple opponents is very hard even for seasoned fighters. The key is to line them up so they can only fight one at a time. Movement of the body is critical or using your environment to help you (for example in a very narrow corridor). Most times that not, these techniques are normally to delay the opponents and run away since you most likely wont be able to beat a large group of people (like in the movies). So yeah, never let the oponent group surrender you, and dont try fighting like in the movies. Best to run away to fight another day.

It depends what you mean by 'multiple' and there are so many factors you can't foresee: I got attacked in the street by two men who were both bigger than me. Why it happened I don't know, I guess they were just looking for a fight - I had my back against the wall so they couldn't get behind me, I hit one so hard in the face that he actually walked away stunned leaving me to fight his fat friend, we exchanged a lot of blows and I couldn't move him, but eventually I got lucky and punched him hard in the face while he was off balance, he hit the ground falling straight on his back and I kicked him and kicked him, I wasn't going to let him get back up. He was semi conscious and managed to drag himself under a stationary truck, if he hadn't maybe I would have killed him. I left him there, his friend had dissapeared. Martial arts don't necessarily represent real street situations. I was lucky, had there been three of them or had the other attacker stayed around it would almost certainly have worked out differently. What was amazing was that the fight gained qite a few onlookers and not one tried to help me or stop the fight. .....and I really wanted someone to help or stop the fight!

Everything said in this video is all very true, and I congratulate you for wanting to expand your martial arts knowledge in learning other systems as bjj and mma.

When I took taekwondo, my teacher took time to teach us what to do in a situation where you are facing more than one opponent. Most taekwondo teachers (in my experience) won’t do that. They also taught us defense against knifes and guns so I’m grateful that I had a teacher that didn’t just focus on kicking and punching, but actually taught us how to defend against weapons and multiple attackers.

Master Woon Kook Baek taught us the throat rip. Since I was 14, that one's been sitting in my pocket, waiting for someone to threaten me badly enough.
