I think it also has a lot to do with signal speed, if our brains were in our feet it would take a lot longer to receive visual and auditory information

So the bigger question I've always had is this. Evolutionarily this all makes good sense to have the brain be in the skull and whatnot, by why do we as humans create that same structure in our robotics? I know it's a bit sci-fi to think about but any time we've created complex robotic analogs of Humanity we've put the major processing power of those creations in the "head" part of the machine. Additionally when we look into deeper fictions about AI rising up on its own to enslave humanity (Terminator films, The Matrix trilogy, Battlestar Galactica, X-Men's Sentinels, etc) we always see the head parts of the machines being the most vital, even when the machines have learned to self-replicate/design their own bodies. Wouldn't it behoove these self-replicating machines who have no biological reason for having their vital processing centers located in their heads to move those centers outside of the place where humans are accustomed to targeting. If the machines moved (or better yet, completely decentralized) their processing cores, the thing which enables them to do their thinking and whatnot, to some other portion of the body, their fight against the humans would go much more smoothly. Just seems logical to me I guess. I wonder if there is something here for ***** to ponder in a PBS Idea Channel video?
@skevoid
@skevoid 10 лет назад
I think the short answer is... we don't. It's that way in science fiction because we love to anthropomorphize, but in practical cases it doesn't happen that way.
@Zimmerh90

***** Are you saying that evolution isnt accepted by the people in the biology field or are you just taking something out of your ass because its convenient for you? Where is these facts you must have that says that small changes in DNA over time will create macro changes that may create new species or better versions of a specie aka the evolution theory is not true? You also disregard the fact that humans didnt need several sets of teeths because the food eaten and how humans have hunted. Because of the new lifestyles in food we eat stuff that are sweeter and breaks down the teeth's faster then it have most of human civilization. Or that humans dont hunt with their mouths etc. Your basically putting together some outlayers that you have no evidence to show of "except trust me I tell the truth".
@jamalcomrobol6453
@jamalcomrobol6453 10 лет назад
Well to actually understamd you have to go outside sci fi think critically. The smaller the object the harder it is to shoot due to recoil compensation centerpoint compensation etc. So it would make sense to have it as the central point because if not you could put a gun in anyones hands and they would win the fight. So it is actually a good central point.
@jamalcomrobol6453
@jamalcomrobol6453 10 лет назад
Zimmerh90 hes saying its still not accepted by everyone as a whole and me im not I believe in god not meaning I biased but I see it as god created all of this but he wants us to find the answers like they say. Its all in front of us we just need to get to where were going. Think an explosion could have happened at any time but it was specific and they say before the big bang there was nothing so how could there be an explosion of such proportions without nothing to start it or set it off

Excellent video, just subscribed. One note though: we have to change the language we use around evolution. Saying "so animals focused their eyespots... on the eating end..." implies a choice or willful evolution. The more correct and less confusing term might be "so animals that developed eye spots etc on their eating end could eat more etc."

That tends to happen in evolutionary discussion. Because it's so much easier to say it in a way that implies intent than saying "X trait was better for survival in Y environment, so individuals with it lived longer and had higher reproductive success and so X trait was more prevalent in the next generation. These individuals lived longer and had higher reproductive success so it was more prevalent in the next generation and on until X trait became a feature of the species" every time you explain the logic behind a change.

Basically it just makes more sense from a wiring standpoint.. further away means more time in between sensing something and responding to it. And since time is an important issue having the brain where eyes and ears go means less chance of a signal being too slow.

Because the cpu should have the fastest connections with the most important sensors like smell, hearing and seeing devices in order to have the quickest response as possible to the outside world, therefore the brain's located closest to them. That results in these devices along with the brain collectively forming a relatively independent module, and humans call it, a head.

Have to consider why a head ? What defines a head ? First, its a housing for our sensory organs, eyes, ears and smell. The neck allows us to rotate and triangulate those senses. A large portion of the brain is dedicated to processing these senses and so it makes sense that the brain is a part of the head.

let's not forget, our brain is in our head, where also our important input organs exist, sense of sight from eyes, hearing from our ears and balance from cochlea, maybe this insures that electric impulses will travel through the shortest distance possible from the input sensory organs to the brain to process them.

I'd say its because of the design of life, (not just humans but all life in general) where our eyes are and mouth and such. It being in head is close to these things for speedier access to our brain. Digestion is separate from brain and of course it could not be in that same general area due to possible contamination or something from the food since it could be toxic. Don't think you can find any animal outside of water with brain else where, maybe some kind of sea life but they are different of course.

Maybe we could get closed captioning? Otherwise I'm enjoying the channel. I was just asking myself the other day: why do are brains have two halves instead of one unified whole? Why do we have two of any organ, besides sense organs like eyes and ears? This helped a little.

I always find it hard to grasp the idea that a creature has no brain. Nothin to control what to do , what to decide to do. I mean, how can the organs function together and decide which operation to do? Do they communicate together? How can one mustle work with the other to do an operation that wasn't received from some main entity? It is more wonderous to me to see such a creature that has no brain and still functions. Not only that, but some creatures have some sort of semi-brain, like the octupus. I've heard each tentecle is controlled by one of them.
@mini-mei

Yes that is fascinating. But more than the muscles "working together" in beings without brains, I'd like to know how they can react to stimuli without one. Take the box jellyfish for example: It has rudimentary eyes on each bottom corner of its four ridges. With the help of them it can maneuver around obstacles that it can see. This is baffling. Not only is it unclear how the jellyfish can even "see" as it has no brain that can interpret the signals from the eyes, but it also reacts to what it is able to see. As for octopus having separate brains in each arm, I don't find that too unusual. We humans have also a sort of second brain. We don't think of it as a brain, as it is not capable of conscious thought, but it is a nerve center with very important functions on its own: The plexus solaris. It mainly controls breathing, the heartbeat and digestion.

I'm no programmer or electrician but I did venture into that field a tiny bit...do you mean like proteins can work together like machines that follow a fixed ("hardcoded") program or like an electronic circuit behaves in a specific way because of its specific components (for example a transistor)? There could be some simple if-then switches and some chemical signals (since as far as I know jellyfish do not even possess nerves so no electronic signals). But I'm not sure something as complex as sight - even if it only could differentiate between solid and non-solid, so basically a sort of black and white - can be processed and reacted to appropriately in a simple if-then scenario. Obviously it is possible somehow, but the how is entirely unknown.

Liran Barsisa here is a bad reply but, well like jelly fish, they kind of work together because of there instics, they just do, ooh look food, let's take and eat. But.. There is one thing, how do jelly fish know how to move?
@FishyDaGamer
@FishyDaGamer 8 лет назад
blubb, well, I don't know, I'm only 10 but I know that if they sense food, they try to take it, but when jelly fish actually moves, all the limbs move at once same, so... That's what I'm confused on.. I don't know.. I'm 10..

FishyDaGamer AndFriends That is interesting...do you mean all jellyfish or a particular one? And you needn't worry about being "only" 10, every scientist was 10 once themselves :)

Couldn't the braincase be an exaptation (as S. J. Gould suggested the term), instead of an adaptation for protecting our valuable nervous system? Maybe it would be interesting to show evolution as a more stochastic than causal process. Do you guys have any videos about that? Awesome videos btw, congrats ;)

I WAS LITERALLY WONDERING ABOUT THIS QUESTION FOR A FEW WEEKS. after realizing that our internal organs are all snuggled together and protected by bone...yet the organ that connects them all is dangling out on its own limb.

I never thought my way as deep as you guys just answered, thank you for answering, but I did notice that our brains are connected right next to the respiratory system. In a way, breathing also helps to cool down our brains.

So. It happens too right? But. I see how it would be hard to evolve to have a brain inside the body, below the lungs maybe, but it would make quite some sense nonetheless right?

Due to the name of this channel, I believe this would be a good place to ask this question: If you wanted to take some free online classes on subjects within math and the natural sciences, which site would be best? I have no intentions of using the knowledge for any professional reasons, but would like to get som wide, basic knowledge that goes beyond the fun-fact level. I've heard good things about edX on a general level, but before diving head down, I would love to hear some opinions on the subject. I'm sick of feeling smart, so I need a push towards the realisation that I know nothing :) Edit: Not that videos like this isn't a good source of learning, but it would be awesome to have the knowledge to develop your own theories based on questions such as the one asked in the title of this video. :)

The "mouth" is my second option for "breathing"; I primarily use my nose for breathing. Neal Degrasse Tyson makes this same silly argument. And also, when I'm eating with my mouth, I'm not holding my breath, but rather simultaneous breathing through my nose.

Ever since learning about the HOX genes in biology class, I thought it would have been cool for some mad scientist to genetically engineer a unicorn using a narwhal tooth onto the horse's forehead segment of their HOX sequence.

You can be that mad scientist if you get a degree and do it in Scotland( their national animal is in fact, a unicorn. so they would love that.) It's by no means too much of a stretch, science has made glow in the dark kittens!

I've got a question that might seem silly, but it's serious. Obviously certain mutations sometimes just never happen to randomly occur, but wouldn't it make a lot of sense for the testicles to be protected in a similar way to their heart with a cartilage structure similar to a rib cage? For such delicate organs, nature "decided" to expose them in the most ridiculous way possible in primates.
