As a young adult who has a lot of childhood memories tied to the Halo series, I can't help but be nostalgic for the games, even as I hardly think about them nowadays, but regardless of that, it's impossible for me to ignore how much of an impact they had on my young, malleable mind growing up. I didn't see the games as a route to some cathartic violence, for me, they were a route to the majesty of our universe, and the incredible world that exists in all of our minds. They played a huge part in my development as a social presence, and as an isolated thinker, and while I'm sure I'd be much as I am today without the series, they completely colored so much of my early "philosophy", and were responsible for my transformation from a child, to a true person.
While you obviously shouldn't let the games do the parenting, you shouldn't disregard the series as mindless violence, rotting your kids brain away either. The series truly is life changing in all of the right ways to a young, malleable mind.
Thanks to RU-vidr Corat for the intro and outro footage of the Halo 1 main menu without any text.
The music in this video is from the Halo 1 OST by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori

I'd recommend getting a cheap Xbox 360 (they can go REALLY cheap these days) and making use of its backwards compatibility to play the whole trilogy and Reach split-screen. Sure, you won't get flashy graphics but it's the next best thing. The Xbox One's of course another option that isn't quite as cheap. PC games have almost never offered split-screen and that's just the way it is. For instance, if Gearbox was told to implement split-screen for Halo PC, Gearbox would have had to allocate more resources to that and it would be a considerable expense for Microsoft for a feature that only a very small niche audience would end up using. Even more so nowadays.

Halo played a huge part in developing my social life as a kid, i was home-schooled so i didnt have many friends, and i kinda liked it that way, i was a happy loner, but i started school in grade 6 so i could actually get into high school, Halo 3 was popular and everyone was playing it. Through Halo it was easy for socially awkward me to make friends and be less socially awkward. Playing with my friends taught me alot about teamwork and working together and the value of CLEAR COMMUNICATION, something the world is seriously lacking right now.... I literally credit Halo 1-3 specifically for breaking me out of my shell to become more of a leader and team-player in life.

The game that did this for me, was Ratchet and Clank. I know those games like the back of my hand. Picking at the game's design and watching videos on how to break it. I always infatuated with every aspect of games. So far to even become a game developer myself. It wasn't until Reach in 2010 when I actually got into the series and it was the game I credit for getting me into the FPS genre.

@William Mayorga It wasn't always like this. I hung around in a group who played games but we wouldn't mention it to others. If you played games you were a nerd and you would get bullied. Sports/skateboarding and "hanging out" was the only pastime for the cool kids. This was highschool in the early 2000s. To be honest, I still don't volunteer that I play games as it is a bit ingrained to hide it.

Here's to many more great experiences with Halo Infinite and the Xbox Series X|S.

Great insight and advice. Here's my short story. Now together, everybody say *_"OKAY BOOMER"_* I haven't thought about _Halo_ in a long time. I do love their haunting intro music and I thought the Wart Hog was the best weapon in the game. My awakening really started when I began reading science fiction novels in the sixth grade. Then, in the seventh grade I really got a passion for learning electronics. I read everything i could get my hands on about that subject ... and every science fiction book in the school library. I was especially inspire by some stories about two kids, Carl and Jerry, in Popular Electronics. (You can read a short post about my adventure making a robot based on one of these stories, *_The Firefly,_* here. www.shavers.page/post/inspiration-to-become-an-engineer ) I didn't play any computer games until college. Personal computers had not been invented yet but we played text games like Star Trek and Adventure on teletypes hooked to mainframe computers we could only see through the glass into the computer room. Those were exciting times for me but we wasted lots of paper from the teletypes. My first job out of college was with an arcade video game manufacturer, *_Cinematronics._* I was the the designer of the first game they actually designed themselves. I designed it, drew the schematics, built the prototype by hand, wrote the software, designed the production test fixtures and stayed on for a while as the bench tech to get the games working. They were crazy to trust a brand new engineer, still wet behind the ear, with the future of the company. It took me nine months from start to shipping the first unit shipped. They almost went under. ( www.arcade-history.com/?n=embargo&page=detail&id=751 ) Now that I'm retired I'm looking for something to do between now and when I die. I took all the things I'm really passionate about, stories, movies, electronics and making things, and have decided to make a video series on RU-vid about two kids living in Austin, TX, Carlos & Geri, who make gadgets and have adventures. My plan is to shoot it in the summer of 2021 and release it toward the end of the year. I'll have an announcement on shavers.page when I get the preproduction rolling. I want to chronicle the process, win or lose. It should be as interesting as the series itself. *_SUBSCRIBED_*

I would like to give some words of caution in regards to halo 2. I play halo 2 a lot and the honorable and religious depiction of the elites somehow gave me the desire to be a religious warlord tyrant with cool armor. Although.. in the end, the game did expose their religion to be a false lie, i'd still say the way they depicted it is as cool af. Lol

I grew up as my little brother's backseat gamer. The 2 consoles we owned we got for X-mas as a gift for both of us but he rarely let me play because I am female and rather timid, but as long as I got to give him directions when he was stuck I was rather content with that situation. And then one day there was Halo, it was a true delight to watch and to talk about after we had to turn the console off and at one point my brother asked our mom for a second controller so we could play co-op. Never before and never after did he actually want me as his player two but with Halo we had both fun. I was his second in command, even when I was the one with the ideas he decided the timing and gave the orders, and together we played the game more than I can count today. Halo was what turned me from a backseat gamer and advisor into someone who was eager and confident enough to shoot stuff, explore, and... well, play. I will never forget Halo.

I relate to this video a lot. I used to play halo religiously 10 years ago and have extremely fond memories of it. It’s where I actively chose to play with people I’ve never met in real life and became friends with them for years playing nothing but campaign, multiplayer, and custom games. Fast forward 11 years later and I’m in university for art school, going into game design and 3d artwork post grad. You never mentioned if you ended up going into game dev but I wanted to share that Halo was definitely the start of it all for me.
