This is so interesting. I used to believe in learning styles, but this video showed me that there's a multitude of ideas and possibilities out there and they're all constantly evolving.🔥 Awesome video, Justin!
wow... it takes a lot of courage to admit one's mistakes... and you guys did it I have been following your channel too for a long time.... Honestly both of you have helped me become twice as productive as I was before I entered med school
@@JustinSung sir, I believe you had mentioned that you sleep for 10 hours. Can you pls tell me when. Me- 9pm to 5am, then 20-30 mins nap. so, 8.30 hours. Can you pls tell me the time to which i can add the remaining 1.30 hours.
Mr. Justin sung, i really appreciate your entire existence ❤ The way that you changed my view about traditional learning methods really blowed my mind❤ Iam on the process of creating my own study strategy and my own learning style ,iam feeling more satisfied and motivated to experience this whole new journey ❤❤❤❤ Much love from Sudan ❤
Many years ago, when I was a teacher, my kids would tell me: "Cook, I'm a kinaesthetic/auditory/etc learner." I would say: "When you go to work and a new method comes down, what form are the directives/directions going to take?" My point was that when you are no longer in school, life does not care. Maybe some parts of the world do now, but I haven't seen it -- of course, as I write this, you say this! Therefore, go ahead and work on the methods that will face you in your life after school.
i have aphantasia and i cannot remember diagrams or any other visual things, but the learning style test my high school gave me (a few years back) said i was a visual learner, that moment i knew it was all bullshit
@@JustinSung I think a video focused on the research surrounding the common studying techniques and why they are /are not effective. For example, you could look at research that supports the Feynman technique and how to best execute it, and then a section on the research surrrounding traditional active recall and spaced repetition and why it may not be so effective. I don’t have access to a university in order to access papers and I know there are many others like me, so I feel like a video that directly displays and explains the research behind specific techniques would be very helpful
15:15 - 16:20 Can apply this to basically anything in life. Fitness, relationships, career, family, friends, quality of life, state of mind, etc... Things that are transformative take time. Tips and tricks CAN help, but if you want the heavy hitters: It. Takes. Time.
Oh now I get it, I was looking at it all wrong. It's like skill and tallent where if you only rely on tallent you think you can't outgrow it when it's really mostly responsible for the earlygame and skill-cap. But saying tallent does not exist is also kinda stupid. Similar thing with learning styles, you can do the other stuff, work with what's available and use but not overly rely on your specific strengths. It would have taken me way too long to figure this out by myself, glad you put this out there Dr. Sung!
@@shamclam21 I kinda built wrong IRL and had to respec in everything. Currently using the "use what's available" build while min-maxing my scaling whenever possible so it's an absolute yolo build.
@@shamclam21 Couple things that work for me that I can share: consistency - neuroplasticity happens during sleep after there has been discomfort/stressors during the day so any skill you pay attention to *every day* is your daily quest. Also, pick one main and everything else is side-quest. Other thing is daily walks if you're okay with going outside. I'm turbo-introverted so I do push-ups, pull-ups , sit-ups, bulgarian split-squats and all manner of bodyweight exercises at home with a day or a few off whenever I feel like I need a rest. Also, keep in mind you will waver before you get back into it a lot. For example, I have not worked-out in 10 days or so but I will start to again in a few days or even weeks but I will start as long as I'm healthy because it makes my body and mind feel light. Keeping it up when it feels hopeless and pointless is the hardest, but most rewarding part. ^^
Really interesting and nuanced take on the topic. Would love a professional development session on this at my school where we work through some case studies (best practices vs wasted time for effective teaching).
Dr Justin, If we are trying to learn a lot of content, it kind of takes a lot of time to ask questions and find relationships for a single topic to make it stick, let alone a whole book, is there any technique for me to do this process faster?
As a neurodivergent with a neurodivergence that is not fall into the usual autistic spectrum or A.D.H.D, I will be personally thankful if you will dedicate a Vido about the learning possibilist that are available for those like me who are so far from neurotypicality that the study & learning tips for Those on the autistic spectrum or dealing with A.D.H.D aren't beneficial for us. At the end of the day, a lot of "simple daily tasks" require from me enormous amount of learning.
There are hiwever people who hafe difficukty processing auditory info or visual written info both might be labked dyslexic. You do go find a text book or auditory formate that explains it in the aay you need you do ask your boss for adjustments in the way instructions are provided!
I teach english in my country, and in my training they taught us about this (They call it VAKT), and I knew right away that it was bs haha. Not only it doesn't work for academic studies, but it is even WORSE for language learning. Learning physics or maths isn't the same as learning English. So even if it worked, they'd still be applying it incorrectly.
15:36 I can't agree more.... It took so much research and experimentation to finally upgrade my learning system.... I now believe that I am almost 2 - 3 times better than I was before... and that is a lot.... taking in consideration I only studied 2 hrs in 1st year of med school and performing relatively great without trying..... Thank you Dr. Justin❤️ Keep doing what you are doing.... You are changing lives. The people who are ready to put in the effort will surely get very much better by following your videos
Justin. This is something that would really help me and probably a lot of people. If you would create a task, which everyone can try, trough a link in the description. In which you present information about a subject in a couple pages (how many you think necessary). Where you challenge the person to create this hypothesis of the big picture in a mindmap and then when they are done, they can see your solution. Which would be the most effective or best or correct way they should've made the hypothesis for that set of pages. I think that would give people a concrete idea of what they should be looking for when trying to create a hypothethical group when studying. And also helping them to see what they thought wrongly or correctly. And even those who really dont get it at all. Personally, that would definitely help me.
That wouldn’t work as how justin sees the subject will not be as helpful as how you see it, much like how his mindmaps make no sense to everyone but himself
I just love Justin sung videos,I have literally watched all his vidoes and they all have benefited me. I have seen an increase in my retention, I am studying accounting, and now, I can study my textbooks faster and retain then for a long time, without much revision. The only thing I still dont get uptil now is that what do you mean when you say *relate the information to the big picture * It's not still clear uptil now, please,I would appreciate if u answer me, thanks Much love from Nigeria
You can convert most information when you encode it so i would not rember written word id rember the noice sound or image those words created? I do sometimes remeber the lecture in auditory format but combind with the images evoked no idea wetger ther are people who can remember th image of the text they veread. Thought learning style was about encoding not the medium you learnt from. Im better with pictures rather than text for crochet and physiology although crochets a more kinesthetic skill.
Will you please tell about learning second language? I want to learn English but i need much much words and i am ready to your advise. I hope thereis a way to learn a lot words in a short time. Thank you
Yeah I don’t like "easy tips" anymore, I needed this video because I am trying to realise what is holding me back, btw I love the edinting too, the slap in the other video killed me😂
Justin I have a questions Ill try to word as best as because this might be hard to understand. I understand how how mind maps can help me study and remember information by making those connections between different things, but every time i try to make a mind map i just get muddled up because i always get the feeling that even though i remember the information now I'm going to forget it in the future. You also said to try to use as little words as possible. I'm starting year 11 next year and have chosen chemistry, biology, physics and methods as well as general English's as I hope to become a doctor. I am not very worried about physics and methods because I am well above the expected level of maths for most of the year 11 curriculum but chem and bio I strugle with trying to remember the information. I'v recently been using remnote as a way to write down my notes because it is easy to just use those online notes to convert directly into flashcrads but I feel like not hand writing the notes is an even bigger problem because less of what I'm writing is goings to my head. Do you have any advice you can give me about these problems that I am facing. Thanks fro your time, would realy mean a lot to me.😁 If its possible could i have a meeting with you online, I am ready to pay if I have to, I understand that your probably very busy but that would be sick thanks
I recently realized that I can't visualize the image of the person that I love in my head. I don't get to see her too much so I thought it was normal but then I tried to visualize my mother's and father's face in my head, I still wasn't able to do it. Even though I see their faces every day. The weird thing is, I can't remember details about anyone's face, even if I try to think about parts of face seperately. So I basically can't remember faces, but I can only recognize them when I see them. If you ask me how my mother's nose look like, is it small ? big ? how is its shape ? I can't give you an answer. I wonder why this is the case and how can I become better at remembering visual information ?
As a neuro scientist from the seventies I can tell you that this model came from linguists who observed the operations of people and then tried to explain the observations by a hypothesis THAT WAS NOT TESTED BY RESEARCH. THE RESEARCH CAME LATER AND THE MODEL, ENHANCED. It was not debunked but simply found to not be a true representation. See Bandler and Grinder, linguists, and creators of NLP. I would not call them neuromyths as much as they are models not truly representative of the phenomenon.
I have a question about the course. Will I get access to the updated version of the diagnostic assessment if I enrol in the next window? Because I read that the new version will be rolled out the day after the window closes.
Yep, all students will be transferred to the new build and have access to all future updates, including the diagnostic assessment, which is going to be released veryyyy soon : )
I do plan to make a video specifically on a guide to language learning, but for now, check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZFyPMRzPNTE.htmlfeature=shared
It's like being the avatar. Like why just use fire magic if earth magic is better here. Using 1 can work but it just isn't as good as using them all situationally.
Dr Justin, i needed a help. I am diagnosed with klinefelter syndrome recently. I am not aware of it's effects on cognitive abilities. Currently i am studying computer science engineering from a tier 3 engineering clg in india, i dont knoe whether i really wanted to do engineering. I chose this because i was keen about computers during childhood. Doctor, I want to be in the top 1%ile of the field which i choose. Doctor, please can you tell, what can be the effects of klinefelter syndrome? Are there any possible ways to overcome this? I really want to be the best in the field which i will choose, but i have self doubts due to klinefelter 😢.
Once i had given mensa denmark iq test, my score was 130. But recently i have diagnosed with klinefelter. I heard that it affects cognitive abilities. Will it affect my career? If i want to reach top position?
There are no learning styles. But there are definetly cognitive styles. Temple grandin Talksi n her book about how she is unable to think verbaly and only be able to see concret pictures. How it did help her in engineering but made it impossible for her to learn algebra. The science also came to the conclusion that there are two very different visual Systems in the brain and that there is a inverse relationship between them. That the object oriented style predict artistik creativity and the spatial predicts scientific creativity.
