Why Your Life is Boring | Soren Kierkegaard Either/Or

Most people don’t like being bored, however, every now and then we find ourselves in that state. Kierkegaard, writing under the character of an aesthetic philosopher in his book Either/Or, states that boredom may actually be a root of evil. Even if we may not go that far, we’d still like to know how to deal with boredom when it comes.
Kierkegaard has two main suggestions for dealing with boredom. First, we should try to cultivate enjoyment intrinsically rather than extrinsically. Instead of chasing after more and more, constantly pursuing change, we should try and train ourselves to enjoy the smaller things in life. By being able to find amusement in anything, we can almost always escape boredom in even the most limiting circumstances.
The next big suggestion is to actually limit our enjoyment of an experience if it starts to become too strong. Kierkegaard suggests that we train ourselves to forget easily so that experiences seem novel and brand new even when we re-encounter them. To do this, he suggests reining in our enjoyment if we find ourselves being swept away too much during an experience. #existentialism #philosophy #kierkegaard

Great vid. For you Q&A: are you a spiritual or religious person? Do you believe the self is an illusion? Finally, do you believe rapists are worse than murderers and are they redeemable?

The ultimate solution to boredom is train yourself to be content with little, and to have fewness of wishes. But to be able to have this level of contentment you need to first be able to restraint your senses, don't just simply act out of your impulses or desires, but constantly reflect on them. But to be able to have this level of sensory restraint you need to cultivate a degree of virtue shame and moral fear, you train to upheld your inner integrity no matter what, thus there is virtue shame, and you try to contemplate on the drawbacks of unmoral lifestyle, thus there is moral fear. If anyone reading all of these, hope you can find the ultimate peace and happiness.

Great video! Your getting better at your craft. Boredom is truly the root of all evil. It’s a loss of purpose and life is full of purposeful things if your put your mind to it. Take the leap of faith in everything you do. And gratitude for being able to do this thing we call life no matter how hard it gets, good times are always ahead.

I believe boredom might come from not being challenged enough or being too skilled for the challenge at hand Do you believe or follow a particular ethical theory? Virtue ethics vs utilitarianism vs rule based approach to life and your personal decisions?

Congrats on the 10K subs. I recently found this channel from reddit and I have being binge watching the heck outta of it. Your view and presentation is superb My question for the next Q&A is quite simple yet complex. How would you motivate 20s year old adults who find themselves fed with life and think they have seen it all?

What inspired you to create this channel and share your interest in philosophy? Do you have a particular interest in a specific area of philosophy and if so will you at some point create videos sharing your personal ideas/beliefs or is it meant only for talking about classic authors and their ideas? I ask these partially because I myself thought about making videos like these, but never quite figured what to talk about, there's just so much! You've been doing some great work and I quite enjoy these videos of yours! Congratulation on the 10k!

on the other hand, boredom is an indication of space and time to explore something new, and a lot of cool things can result from the way in which you go about resolving the boredom

Hi! A question: what do you think is a generally effective (more or less) way to make others interested in philosophy? PS. Love your channel, keep up the good work :)))

Do you think there is any objective truth and, if so, do we have access to it and, if so, what is it. Why is it objective?
@justinbyrge8997
@justinbyrge8997 Год назад
May I try to answer? Sweet thanks. Objective in the context you're asking about means "being outside of the mind and independent of it". Truth means "in accordance with reality". To reframe your question: Do you think there is anything apart from mind that is in accordance with reality? Yeah, it's called reality. But you may notice how this question is kind of nonsensical in the first place once it's reframed. So, to get a better way of understanding we simply ask the question's opposite like you would in probability sometimes. That question is something like, "Do you think that reality is all in our heads? Or is there something actually out there, even if my mind wasn't? Well to say no leads to solipsism. And while it may be difficult to show evidence for or against solipsism, it's pretty safe to assume that your child has a mind space of their own, even if it develops after birth. And if they have a mental state now but didn't before they were born, then it's also pretty safe to say that, yes, reality existed before your child was born. Our senses give us access to what we need to know about really in order so that we don't die or become harmed. No one knows what reality is actually like since our senses act as a filter in which a limited perception of reality is only capable. And reality is objective because objective means to be separate from mind, in this context, and all good evidence and reason point to this conclusion. How'd I do?

@justinbyrge8997
@justinbyrge8997 Год назад
@@elishashmalo3731 🤔 Not sure. Most of my philosophical education is from RU-vid, I have a difficult time reading lol. But I do recommend reading or watching things in support of solipsism balanced with things that refute it. You'll be led down lots of rabbit holes but you'll have a much wider perspective. For example, in my estimation, the fact that dreams in all their detail seem to be constructed from your mind is the best line of reasoning in support of. My question always comes down to this: how would the truth of the answer once known confidently enough to be almost certain one way or the other affect the way you behave in the world? If you knew for sure that your mind is the only one, would you then go on a conquering spree since you wouldn't be harming anything when you kill it? Personally I think people believing solipsism to be true explains some questionable behavior from past people and leaders as well as the present. To me, even if my mind was the only one to exist like in a dream, the other entities that look like they're alive definitely act in ways to preserve themselves and to avoid harm. So that has to be navigated regardless of which position you accept. Make sense?
@justinbyrge8997
@justinbyrge8997 Год назад
@@elishashmalo3731 You know what's an interesting line of thinking? Pretend that you can have a dream in which everything is coherent and ordered rather than the scattered and chaotic way they normally present themselves. Now imagine that you and your dream characters live lives in a sequential way and can interact with your dream characters in exactly the same way we can interact with each other in 'reality'. How do you think your dream characters would respond to this question? Given that most of us most of the time don't even realize we're dreaming until we've woke up, then how would be able to tell that you are dreaming? What clues would make you stop and go wtf, maybe I'm dreaming? This breaks my mind a lot because I've experienced a dream within a dream a few times and it's pretty freaky. Anyway, sorry for the comment bombs lol

Why make things so problematic? Truth is absolute, opinion is relative. 1 is 1, 0 is 0 and an ! looks like a 1 and may be a 1 upside down.

O tédio para Kierkegaard era um sintoma de desespero de quem foge de si mesmo sem saber ou sabendo não quer enfrentar.
