Good points and some things I've come to learn the hard way. Also a more expensive mic won't necessarily sound better. I had a Neumann TLM 102, great mic but it didn't sound as good as my Rode NT1A with my voice. Enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work!

I guess our exchange on your other video made the algorithm lead me here haha. Love the Joby suction cups. The mic is the Joby suction cup plus their locking arm correct? (Or is that a different brand of locking arm?) More importantly, what cable is that (in your “RU-vidr” car setup)? Love the idea of using a long cable like that to get the mic closer/in better position.
@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Ha, hey Davide! Looks like you're stuck with me lol! For an arm like we were previously discussing, I'd go for something like this amzn.to/3g36W07 (aff link). It has a little added length and should be more than enough to support a Rode VMGOII on top of your camera. The 3.5mm TRS extension cable I use is this amzn.to/3CSEQO0 with a right angle connector but really any TRS to TRS 3.5mm extension cable should work for your application.

Have you considered a dual capsule mic like the Deity D4 Duo or Movo DoubleMic? They are designed to pick up audio both from the front and rear. Super helpful videos! Been wondering about this topic for so long! What distance of recording would you recommend for Rode VideoGo ll?
@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Thanks for your kind words! With regards to distance from a mic like the RODE VideoMic GO II, it depends on what you're recording into, where you're recording and generally how loud your speaking voice is. These can differ for everyone. That being said, I think generally, anything vlogging distance (arm's length or less) will work great in the majority of use cases! Hope this helps!

I stream occasionally for fun and I have a ZV-e10 and the RVMG II and have watched most of your videos on this setup. For some reason, the audio sounded tinny and had that heavy background hiss when plugged into the camera. It also picked up my laptop fan and made it sound like I was in an airplane hangar the whole time. I don't have a sound treated studio, but the audio was just plain bad. No matter what recording level I tried (I tried all of them) and implementing things like noise suppression and noise gate filters, I was still getting these issues. I randomly decided to use the mic via USB directly into my computer, and the audio quality improved dramatically. No background hiss, less tinny and natural sounding. Any idea why this might happen? If I want to film anything on the go I'll have to plug into my camera but I want to keep the high audio quality I know the mic is capable of. Thanks for your videos and the other helpful tips that have improved my experience thus far!

@WayneRECs

Thanks for your Comment! It really depends on your needs with a wireless option (and how much functionality you want). If you are a solo creator and only need 1 wireless transmitter, you can find the Gen 1 Wireless GO discounted (as I believe that it's discontinued) or get the "single" Wireless GO II w/ 1 TX & 1 RX. I would love to try out the DJI Mic but it's not currently in my production schedule and budget... but you never know!

You did a great job at making this video of but one thing you left out, cramps from an audio interface are often a hundred times better than on a camera for example I can throw a shotgun microphone on a ZB Yvonne orji ve10 and it sounds like ask pear to when I plug it into a $100 Scarlett solo audio interface the audio interface just blows the prince in the camera out of the water even if the microphone and you are in the same exact location that makes a huge difference so unfortunately cameras just don't have good preamps, I remember getting my first shotgun microphone which also works on XLR, I was blown away at how different it sounds when hooked into the camera or the audio interface I mean I was blown away completely blown away by the difference, so I'll never look at the camera unless I absolutely have to for some reason, and I hope that day never comes again where I need to hook it into the camera

@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Hey Juan! Thanks for asking! Actually, I'd recommend the RODE VideoMic GO II (the mic in this video). I've used mine for video calls in a room that is more reflective than what you describe and people have noted the audio quality. The key is microphone placement in conjunction to your camera placement. If you don't want the microphone in the shot during your call, consider something like a desktop scissor boom arm. I've seen some with weighted bases for under $40 and that will help get your mic up above your camera shot and as close to your mouth as possible. This will always help produce the better sound in an untreated space.

@@WayneRECs Great! I've been thinking about this mic or going with the deity VO-7U with the arm kit. I'm in EU, so prices differ. I have to import the deity VO-7U(with it's arm and pop filter) and ship it for 280 USD or, buy here the rode video mic go 2 for about 130 USD (I convert it) and buy a separate arm or something to place it correctly. Just to clarify: - Deity VO-7U (with arm kit): 280 USD - Deity VO-7U (with stand): 211 USD + ~40 USD for an arm and foam plosive protector: 251 USD - Rode Video Mic Go 2: 130 USD + ~40 USD stand: 170 USD I think the deity VO-7U it's a better sounding mic for this purpose (dynamic, gets a cleaner audio based on how this room it's not treated), but slightly harder to hide it. Maybe I'll raise my web cam (I have a separate one from the Mac). What would you do in my place? (I need to order it these week, so that's the pressure i have) I take it seriously because it will be the only mic I'll buy in my life maybe. To give you some context, I'm a lead developer and I have a Sennheiser HD 599 SE as headphone. Thanks for answering
@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Hey Juan! If you're priority is to not have the mic visible, then the Deity VO-7U might be tough as you stated given it's a dynamic mic and would sound best close up to your mouth. But with a separate stand along webcam that you can re-position, you should be able to get a good sound with the VM GO II in your situation.

I'm using the Canon G7x III with zoom H1n recorder for video shooting, and normally record guitar solo the most, do u think this Rode Videomic Go II or sennheiser MKE 400 suitable for my scenario setup?
@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Hey Steven! Thanks for asking! Without knowing details like if you're recording an acoustic guitar or micing an amp, I would recommend the MKE 400. It has a more even frequency response for a typical guitar range and a higher max SPL (sound pressure level) which allows you to record louder sources without distortion. Hope this helps!
@ycsteven
@ycsteven 2 года назад
@@WayneRECs I record mostly classical nylon string acoustic guitar, and for now I am using the Zoom H1n, I am wondering will it be much better if I invest the Sennheizer MKE 400 to blockout the background noise? Or like you mentioned before, it is depends on the mic position not the mic preference?

@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Hey Steven! Thanks for sharing! A lot of factors go into accomplishing certain recording objectives. If you are looking to eliminate background noise, you will want to look at equipment with inherent low self noise. That can be hard to find in consumer products. One practical thing to try is lowering your audio record level & placing the mic as close to your guitar as comfortable. By doing this, you're optimizing your signal to noise ratio (by lowering the self noise of your recorder and increasing the guitar by getting closer to the mic). The balancing act would be to make sure the loudest part of your playing doesn't clip. You may also want to consider the environment you record in. Every space has an inherent "sound" but by adding in things to absorb unwanted reflections and being mindful of environmental noises, that can help as well. That being said, with your guitar, you may want some natural reverb afforded by hard surfaces in your space, so again, it's a balancing act. Lastly, highly directional mics will always help in isolating what you want to record but again, will be subject to whatever recording device you use with it.

@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
Hey Tim! Thanks for your comment! If your ZV-E10 seems to function fine with the Rode Micro (as in it gets a good signal which you can adjust using the camera's Audio Rec Level), it sounds like you might have a defective VideoMic GO II. You can first check to make sure it isn't the cable, by swapping it out with the Micro's cable. But otherwise, you might need to contact the store or Rode about a replacement. As the VideoMic GO II has no adjustable functions when it's plugged into a camera via the 3.5mm input and your camera seems to be working fine, then I don't think it could be anything else. Hope this helps!
@timgalletas3856
@timgalletas3856 2 года назад
@@WayneRECs thanks for the quick reply Wayne! Yeah I tried different cables without any luck. I’m getting a replacement next week so I hope it’s just the mic and not the camera. One observation I made is that while I have the mic connected to my cell phone and connect the 3.5 cable to the ZV-E10, the mic works perfectly fine but once I unplug the cell phone from the mic, the volume of the mic drops significantly after 20 seconds while still connected to the Sony camera. This makes me think it’s more like a pre-amp issue or that it needs the boost from a power source. I know you don’t have this issue with yours. I also tried the Go II mic with the Zoom 1hn recorder and it works perfectly fine. Very odd issue I guess.

So, we can conclude from this vid there’s no such thing as a bad mic? Just bad audio editing or sound engineering 🤔 🤷‍♂️
@WayneRECs
@WayneRECs 2 года назад
lol, hey Rawb! I have some pretty strong personal opinions about what constitutes a "bad mic" but overall I think most mics can sound good when in the right situations. I think a lot of YT videos give mis-information when it comes to "audio quality" and a lot of that comes down to using a mic inefficiently and having unrealistic expectations. I think the biggest misconception is that a mic sounds either good or bad when in reality there are a number of external factors (mic technique, recording chain, environment) that can affect the "audio quality". Don't get me wrong, there are certainly mics that sound worse than others and a lot of that comes down to mic parts/components and build quality/design (but not necessarily price). Maybe I'll have to do a video on this...lol

@@WayneRECs 😂 though I concur.. … with most if not all your talking points , I have to admit I generally take folk at their word if their word in yt vids but do take note if they seem to be shilling or use to much BS filler talk and or talk to fast ( which for me ) makes it hard to follow and focus on the topic of discussion 🤷‍♂️ .. but will admit I never thought about them playing with the audio in post 🤦‍♂️ 😳 … don’t like to be cynical , everyone’s aloud to prove their word is no good! One thing that drives me batty is no long shot when claims of distance isn’t shown .. lol always forget when I comment so it’s always a surprise to get one lol , TBH I was just being facetious 😳🤷‍♂️ .. thanks for the reply ✌️🤙

Thanks for your feedback! I'll definitely take this into consideration with future videos. Meanwhile, I might suggest you adjust your viewing position as you may be WAY TOO CLOSE to your screen.
