I cover three big reasons you shouldn't store your valuables with your bank in safe deposit boxes. We cover cash, precious metals like gold and silver, jewelry and documents. It's really eye opening.
I stack silver and gold to hedge against our debt-fueled, fiat currency-based economy that I am convinced is in severe trouble. Consider stacking silver and gold yourself to help you build and preserve wealth. And thank you for watching Campbell’s Coins!

Good points on why not to use safe deposit boxes. A dear friend passed recently and had a box titled to her and an unknown person. Family was desperately trying to find out who that person was to gain access because the bank would not tell them.

Slap’s “Ten Commandments For Storing Precious Metals At Home” (bearing in mind the average duration of a break-in in the US is 11 minutes) 1) If using a safe, bolt it down and load it with barbells or other VERY heavy weights. 2) Store some decoy/sacrificial money or coins in an easy-to-find location. Then hide the good stuff well. 3) Unless you use a safe, never hide your stash in a bedroom or bedroom closet. 4) Same as #3, but insert “study” and “pantry”. 5) Forget hollowed-out or phony books… your stack will be gone in less than 2 minutes. 6) Avoid storing on any type of shelf or bookcase. Thieves aren’t neat freaks… they’ll simply sweep out or tip these over. 7) If you’re like most folks, you’ll want frequent access to your stash… don’t make access too difficult (behind drywall, buried in the yard, need a sledgehammer to get to it, etc.). 8) Unless using a safe, the best hiding spots are either in plain sight and highly likely to be overlooked, or they’re multi-layered (meaning you have to move this, shift that, lift this and open that in order to access your stash). 9) Make sure a trusted partner (spouse, financial planner, estate attorney, etc) has a sealed “open in the event of my death” letter describing where your stash is hidden. 10) With the exception of #9 above, NEVER EVER talk about your stash or that it’s in your home!

If your silver stack grows too big to hide and secure safely where quick access is needed in an emergency then you may want to consider converting some of it to gold to make hiding and storing much safer and easier, this will also allow you to transport a higher value amount much faster in an emergency.

When I was young I lived in different large, affordable apartment complexes. Burglary was not uncommon and always a possibility. For security reasons I never lived in a ground floor unit, so owning a TL rated safe was pretty much impossible, even if I could afford one at the time. I think there is a time and place for everything. Also, the lack of insurance argument applies to your homeowner policy as well. If your house is burglarized and you lose a few tubes of gold eagles, you are not getting made whole again by your homeowners policy unless you have a rider on the policy and meet all of their requirements of storage, disclosing your complete inventory, etc.

It's good it was a hassle with granddad's box. There are laws governing heirs and ownership. Without a Will, Trust, Power of Attorney (still alive), a family co-owner of the box, etc. it goes to Probate Court. This protects the heirs. Banks can be fined, bank employees can be fired for letting someone in the box without proof of being a legal heir. Your examples of bank box problems are indeed rare. If law enforcement gets a warrant to look into your bank box, you know they can just as easily get a warrant to search your property, home. In my state contents of unpaid box rentals are by law opened by witnesses, the contents are listed and turned over to the state which holds them in perpetuity until heirs are found. The state has a Web site of unclaimed property for people to look at. Of course there's a chance of box theft or a waiting period to get box contents if a bank closes. But it's just as likely or more likely you could be robbed at home, forced to open your safe, your house burglarized or burn down and your gold/silver gone or melted. A lot more homes are destroyed by tornadoes than banks closing and bank vaults broken into. Banks have security cameras, sprinkler systems and better vaults than most homes. Homes with high dollar valuables should have safes, security cameras, door/window sensors. It's very wise to keep your mouth shut, do not tell anyone you have valuables at home. It is good to insure valuables, add them to homeowners policy whether they are in a bank box, at home or some at both.

If you hold precious metals or what I prefer to call monetary metals of the 1st & 2nd tier (i.e. Gold & Silver), then you want to develop a strategy for how you go about holding these metals. Should you keep any in your home? Yes, a small amount should be kept in your home. Maybe 2 to 5 ounces of Gold along with 100 to 200 ounces of Silver is probably the maximum that should ever be held in a home, absent some massively cool, concealed, and secret storage method that's in a designed & fire-resistant wall cavity, a cleverly hidden floor safe, etc... Probably 1 to 2 ounces of Gold and 50 to 100 ounces of Silver is more realistic for most people. That all assumes that you are trying to hold some amount of both metals. Obviously, if all you have it Gold, then you can probably store at least 1/3 of in your home. Having said that, you should also consider other ways to hold your metals. Some people won't have a lot of options, as they are apartment dwellers, but even then, furniture that you own can be modified to hold precious metals. The homes of very close family or friends can be used as alternative storage areas. In most cases, they need not even know what you're storing with them, so long as it's not too large or too heavy. This means that the amounts would have to be kept within limits. Encasing the metals in flame retardant batting that is itself vacuum sealed inside multiple pairs of quality 100% wool socks that are packed tightly into a box that is wrapped in box tape and then carefully and cleanly wrapped in a couple layers of quality duct tape or gorilla tape with the label of "Dad's Army Diaries & Medals" or "Mom's love letter's & trinkets from Dad" or "1st Lincoln Logs Set" or something else innocuous that can be written in Sharpie on the outside. Just be sure that everything is neat and tight, so that ZERO sound can be heard when it is dropped or shaken. If you store these with close family or friends that you trust to the highest degree, it's unlikely that they will cut or rip through the duct tape and then through the box tape just to see what's in the relatively small box. Also, it can't way 20lbs. It must be 5lbs or less, so 50 to 70 ounces of Gold & Silver with a lesser amount being a wiser amount. As much as is possible, the metals should be securely in the center of the box, so that it doesn't have an off center of gravity, which might raise both suspicion and interest, but this is a secondary concern. Metals can also be held in larger potted plants. So long as they are adequately packaged in multiple layers of alternating materials (i.e. paper, plastic wrap, box tape, duct tape - each layered twice), they will be fine for years and will receive ZERO water damage. Metals can also be held in your car, with some know how and care. They should not be held in the back of your car, in the engine compartment, in the glove box or in any of the side panels of your vehicle. They should always be held somewhere in the middle of your car. There is almost always some sort of center console that can be modified to hold some amount of precious metals, without giving away that there is a false bottom. Metals can be held in the earth pretty easily, so long as you use quality materials, dig a deep enough hole, and have sufficient understanding, access, and control of the area to make sure you're able to retrieve the metals as a later date. Metals may be stored with junk. For example, covering a well packaged amount of precious metals with a generous amount of rusty washers & bolts in a variety of sizes inside a metal or plastic pale that isn't going to fall apart within 2 or 3 years is an easy option. This can be put in an outbuilding, a shed, or a garage without anyone being the wiser. The bolts and washers should all be steel and left out to rust. There shouldn't be anything shiny or new about them, and therefore, little or no temptation for anyone to rummage through them with the idea of using them. As with the potted plant, metals can also be held in plain sight. A decorative glass jar with colorful marbles can be placed on a book shelf. Put an inch or two of marbles in the jar. Gently place a tube of whatever metal you want in the exact center of the jar, and then carefully, without causing the tube to settle and the marbles to be pushed up around the tube, start filling in the empty open space around the tube. This extra weight will push the marbles on the floor of the jar down, and prevent the settling of the tube. So long as the jar is tall enough and large enough in volume, any coin tube should be able to fit inside with colorful marbles all around it, obscuring the contents in the center of the jar. Of course, the larger the tube, the larger the jar you will need. When finished, this heavy jar will not show the metals contents from the top, the sides, or the bottom. You can also do this trick with stainless steel ball bearings or a variety of dry beans that differ in color. I could go on and on for pages of different, obvious, and simple ways that you can develop to store your precious metals in ways that make them less vulnerable to theft, flood, fire, or overt confiscation by agents of the government. But yes, NEVER KEEP THEM IN A BANK...NOT EVER!
