I have a Patreon, but honestly, I've never done anything with it. I believed in what I thought was the original model - to bring back the opportunity for people to become patrons of their favorite artists, so that those artists could concentrate on their artwork. Da Vinci and many others had patrons, and this is how they survived. Patreon is.. not. It seems to me that it's more a place for artists to make money by teaching other artists, rather than for pure patronage. I've been thinking about this for a while, so I'll definitely check out your other vid, thanks. And thanks for this one. You settled my mind on something I've struggled-with: Consolidating all of my various sites and social media together, and turning my RU-vid channel into more a creative haven, rather than a location for a single type of thing.

RU-vid is without a doubt my favorite place on the internet and I highly agree with you on this topic. It has been a game changer for me in so many aspects of my life, and even though I'm not monetized as of now, I'm working hard trying to build my channel up to that point where it will allow me to work full time on my art and creative work. Hopefully I'll get to that point soon! RU-vid is also a wonderful FREE resource for education for many and most of the skills that I've learned in the last 10 years or so has come from RU-vid. I definitely believe that the future of many things is RU-vid. 😊

I think most artists on youtube are doing basic studio vlogs because youtube is straight up a second job. I love the idea of creating high quality youtube videos, but it takes so much time and effort : we need to publish at least 1 video a week to grow our channel, meaning that every week, we not only have to do our actual job of creating art , running a business, etc. But also having a full on second job of planning, documenting, editing.. a video. It takes a lot of energy to create meaningful art, i think it also takes as much to create wonderful videos. It is very challenging and i have been finding myself to be spreading myself too thin, especially as it is the beginning of my art journey. I don't understand how we can make and sell art while also managing a youtube channel full time. If we spend all of our time creating youtube video, we have less time making actual art. And then priorities change and we become content creator instead of actual artist because we spend more time on it. I see my favorite creators burning out and a part of me is scared this would happen.
@KelseyRodriguez
@KelseyRodriguez Год назад
A lot of channels both established and starting out really don't upload once a week. Valerie Lin uploads like once a month and has from the beginning. Megan Wang uploads every other week, same with Paloma AFAIK. Leigh does like once a month or something now. I think the era of a weekly studio vlog is ending. You're right, artists need more time to make art & make a quality video. The answer is to this is to just upload a bit less. Once a week is great when you're making RU-vid a habit and learning the ropes, but after a while it's not sustainable and you need to space things out more. I hope that helps!

I agree, it becomes more of a filmmaking journey than artist's journey. It's hard to focus on making art while creating youtube videos I can't even imagine how time consuming it will be. I rather just make art and post it and not have to talk to an audience about the art itself, some of us just aren't good at that.

As an artist with a RU-vid channel that's fallen WAY by the wayside, this is exactly what I needed to get myself pumped up again! I remember how much I loved the process of putting together a video, and I'm so looking forward to doing it again, but better. I LOVE the idea of making art vlog style videos but thinking of them as movies--not dramatizing our lives necessarily, but treating them as something worthy of a movie. I don't have the energy to comment on as many videos as I would like, but I really wanted to comment on this one--thank you!

That’s what I’ve been saying! TikTok and Instagram is a hard to connect with your audience cause it’s just a place to consume art and nothing else. While you can also do the same thing with RU-vid, content is not only longer, but there’s at least some form of engagement.

As someone with a lot of struggling artist friends, I watched art youtube for a bit and was surprised to see a number of creators seemingly thriving. But, as you mention, its limited to a certain subset of artists. Its often cute, pretty, or quirky illustrations turned into prints, stickers, and other small reproducible items, and the videos themselves usually try to offer similar cozy, asmr, relaxed vlog vibes. RU-vid could certainly dictate some mass market trends, but I don't think its the future of art. Algorithms encourage sameness, making videos is a ton of work, as is having to present both your work and yourself. Its certainly right for some artists, but not most. And if it does work for you, it might be worth double checking whether your art is a reflection of you or a biproduct of algorithm consumption.

As an art student, it really feels like RU-vid is a great way to showcase my art as it is so diverse in art styles and experiences, which entails having a community centralized on art. It's nice to be able to share art in video forms because it is like storytelling in a movie or like a tv series because it can be cut off to different parts which have story arcs (just like TenHun's biggest collab).

That's exacly THE topic I have on the back on my brain like 24/7... I tried YT but "failed" finding my voice in it. I will love to go back at it when I also go back to making art seriously (I kinda took a break to stay at home with little girl) and I'm really want to find my way of making art video because the actual very aesthetic way of doing it, although is a joy to watch, is a real pain to make... Thinking of every different angles to shoot, every broll, etc... drain my brain power from the actual work of art I'm trying to make in the first place! Congrats to all of you that manage to so, but I think I really need to find a way to make video about my creative process even if I'm not dressed for the camera, or if suddenly I want to work late in the evening etc... My point is, I don't want that the video making part becomes bigger than the actual artwork itself.

I entirely agree that the personal connection will be a crucial element to distinguish the individual artist against the tide of AI/CG art that is about to come flooding in over the next however many years. In recent years, I have been particularly impressed by how many museum exhibitions have worked to really emphasize the sense of the community and context that a particular artist lived in, rather than simply presenting work as a sort of Platonic object. An excellent example just a little over a year ago was the amazing show at the Boston MFA that really emphasized Basquiat's friendships and fellow artists, performers and musicians in the larger Hip-Hop and Graffiti subculture of New York City in the early 1980s. Now THAT was a breath of fresh air, and it really gave me a much better sense of that era and his place in it., as well as also introducing me to artists that I otherwise would have never heard about.
@TheFatalintention
@TheFatalintention Год назад
AI art is now flooding the internet, not just stealing CG art, but traditional. I'm impress about how artist who can actually make a difference in developed country's are doing nothing to push laws against AIs. Most of them like ross draws, sam does art etc take the damm AIs like a toy, cuz they are already well positioned.. And dont give a f%ck about the 99% left. AIs devs tryied to do the same with music not long ago, and the industry take them down faster.. I feel like as artist we should know more about copyright laws be cause AIs don't have to eat. P.D: sorry about dwelling on this in your comment hahaha

@@TheFatalintention Ikr? It baffles me, like what are people waiting for? The moment when AI will make all of them lose their jobs? This is why I’m focusing more on in-person events and shows going forward. These things aren’t going anywhere and (most) people love connecting with the artist. Posting on social media really does feel like throwing stuff out into the void and I've always appreciated how youtube feels like it makes all your content count for something, like it's a documentation of your progress. I've been trying to balance work and everything and trying to edit at the same time + plus getting over that dumb feeling I have that what I make needs to be at a certain quality in order for me to post it, but maybe I just need to start doing stuff and letting it improve at its own pace. Thank you as always for your videos and your channel. You've made this space such a nice place to be.

This video is a proverbial sign from heaven for me lmao. I'm doing an artproject that would require me to explain in copious ammounts of text what motivated every piece of it and since I post my art f.e. on Twitter the throught of it was just dreadful. So I came up with the idea of making a video where I get to gush over the inspirations and ideas that led to the final product, without feeling limited and constrained, especially since one of the inspirations came from a specific niche of youtube vids. This video is just... Yes. Just yes. It's almost like a divine confirmation that this could work out very well. Thank you so much.

I love how eloquently you put this!! I had interest for youtube awhile back, and it kinda faded and it has rekindled recently so your video really hits home. Thank you for the thoughtful sharing of this topic you're passionate about~

Agree!! If you aren't getting play you aren't being yourself. RU-vid isn't pushing an algo on people, people are looking for authentic stuff.

I love your videos so much! ❤ and totally agree, also… artception 😏 you hit the nail on the head that the connection you can establish through video on RU-vid about your art with an audience is what makes it unique and special

I feel like you were talking directly to me. This is a major confirmation for me to keep going. I’m a long way to monetization as I just started over the summer but my vision is to “bring the art within the art”. It’s challenging but I’m having a lot of fun and evolving as a person as I’m creating my content for RU-vid. Thank you Kelsey ✨

I always think about how art is the most beautiful form of human connection, I love listening painters while they are working or just listening to them at all because you can see the soul behind the work. I now feel comfortable with my skills on making art and I really would like to connect with others through this, Instagram is so difficult to work with and also TikTok. I will try to make RU-vid content, I have so much to share and if I'm lucky people will share their time with me also. Thank you so much for making this video!

Thank you for the pep talk - it helps solidify the strategy I was going to go with to promote my manga. I've been worried about the time consumption with the already massive project ahead, but I deff agree this would be beneficial.

I stumbled on your channel and I’m soooooo glad I did. As of yesterday I just started posting my art videos on RU-vid and I was unsure and overwhelmed with the posting but you convinced me that I’m making the right decision. I’ve been focused on TikTok and I love telling stories about life and sharing my personal experiences while sharing my artwork. I love the gems you shared! It gave me courage that I’m doing the right thing starting my RU-vid. Thank you sooooo much!!!!
