RU-vid is getting worse, and that’s because it HAS to.
It’s not just you imaging things…
RU-vid is forcing people to turn off their adblockers, recommending bad content, removing user feedback, allowing progressively worse advertisers on their platform and trying to keep up with every new trend in video. I hate to be the one to tell you but, it’s not going to get better from here. This video is not the billionth episode of RU-vidr complains about RU-vid, instead I want to look at the four business fundamentals driving decisions that is already making the platform worse for creators and viewers. Of these companies only Meta’s Facebook competes with RU-vid’s core offering of user generated video on demand but that is secondary to Facebooks core functionality of keeping you up to date with what the boomers are angry about.
All of the other platforms operate in a niche, like shortform content on Tik Tok, live video streaming on Twitch and Servicing the Chinese market for Bilibili. These sites don’t compete with RU-vid, but RU-vid does compete with them. Months after TikTok started gaining market dominance RU-vid reacted by launching RU-vid shorts, and the site also competes directly with twitch for live stream content. The biggest missed opportunity is premium paid content. RU-vid operates by making a tiny amount of money off a massive amount of people, and that means the content on their site is necessarily low budget. The largest creators on the platform may wow viewers with how much they spend on their videos, but even Mr Beast is only creating something that is akin to a mid-budget reality TV show.
He also produces less content than a similar show that would air on traditional media outlets because his videos are shorter and released less frequently. Paid subscription streaming services or cable TV stations bring in a lot more money on a per viewer basis than RU-vid because everybody that uses their platform pays for it. A web-based service like Netflix also has an expense advantage over RU-vid on their content side. Netflix has to pay more to produce or license it’s content where RU-vid gets it for free from people uploading to their platform but in return Netflix has a more curated library of high value content. In a Bloomberg Feature from 2013 the company revealed that it compressed its entire library of movies and TV shows into a two point seven five PETAbite [2.75 PB] master catalogue. That’s two thousand eight hundred times a petabyte which is how much storage most high-end personal devices have.
Since that report there has been no reliable updates to the actual size of the Netflix library, but the number of movies and shows offered has actually shrunk since then, compression has got better, and Netflix has NOT rolled out any new features like higher resolutions that would demand more storage. RU-vid has that much data uploaded to its servers EVERY SINGLE DAY. Netflix and other streaming services pay for their content through licensing deals, RU-vid pays for its content by handling billions of videos that will never get a single view so they can keep the tiny fraction of videos that do bring in revenue. There are no new people left to sign up to RU-vid, everybody that wants to watch videos on the internet will already use it unless they live in a country where their access is restricted.
When billions of gigabytes worth of data are being uploaded on servers every day the only thing, the company has left to do is switch from getting more users to getting more out of the users they have. There is only so much space on the sites home screen and recommendations side bar so all of these options are leaving less room for the stuff that people usually come to RU-vid for.
For those of you who do use an adblocker don’t feel too smug just yet, because it’s time to learn How Money Works to find out why RU-vid HAS to get worse.

@@shaniaandrews8782 that is called advertiser/creator obfuscation RU-vid had that, once upon a time, but then Karens were harassing corporations for having ads running on ISIS videos and thus the adpocalypse began. Twitter got away with it because the NSFW content wasn't having ads run "on" it, the NSFW content existed and ads existed and seeing a Dora the Explorer ad next to somebody making art of Dora getting railed was, at most a "lucky" coincidence. Since the ads are just placed on the page and not associated with any specific tweet (and content like Dora porn was mostly only going to be found by people interested in it) nobody actually connected the dots and blamed the advertisers. The problem Twitter is having now is not that any one instance of ads and content clashed, it's the fact that the brands themselves were being impersonated by people able to afford the 8 bucks for a check mark. Technically none of the advertisers care about any of the other things going on with Twitter, they weren't getting blamed for the white supremacy, racism, grooming, culture wars, or pornographic content their ads were in the splash zone of, so they didn't care to remove their support... until checkmark "gate"

@SherrifOfNottingham
@SherrifOfNottingham 7 месяцев назад
It's because RU-vid cares about keeping you on the platform, which causes a lot of "bad" content to be pushed in front of people. A good example of this is tutorials, if you search how to do _X_ and find a video and watch it, if it's a good one you're probably going to hop off and go do the thing in the tutorial after you watch that video, but if it's a bad tutorial then you're probably going to frustratedly click onto the next video to start the cycle over again. The problem is the algorithm is going to hate the good tutorial, since everybody that watches it stops watching videos for a while, as they go do the thing they needed to do, but the bad tutorials will have people stay on the platform. Each "bad" tutorial also is another chance to send more ads in front of your eyes, thus it's incentivizing bad tutorials on the platform. The worst part is not only do the bad tutorials keep you on the platform, they also usually drive engagement pretty hard as people are more likely to complain about the tutorial, hit the dislike button, or ask befuddled questions in the comments of the video, where the clear and concise video will maybe get a thumbs up from people. Since a thumbs up and a thumbs down are both "engagement" they both boost the video in the algorithm. The same problem happens in all other video types, but tutorials are the most clear as to why this behavior exists.

It doesn't surprise me that so few people subscribe to RU-vid Premium. RU-vid is a place to find stuff that entertains you, but for the most part not stuff that you're going to love enough to pay for. It's like the difference between The Voice and The Sopranos. Loads of people will watch The Voice if it's on, but no-one's buying the DVD boxset. The other issue is that RU-vid has very little control over whether you see adverts, because the video creators themselves will often put adverts into the video anyway. So you're paying not to see adverts, and then seeing adverts anyway.

I think the funny thing about RU-vid ads is that unlike commercials on TV, which usually are in the background as you wait for the show to restart in it's next part, is that they actively stop people from watching the content they wanted. Which creates a negative impression from the outset, especially if said ads are completely unrelated to the content being watched. It doesn't help that some of the ads are straight up scams being pushed by the robots.

Then Google bought RU-vid , and ads were being placed on top of the videos I'm watching . Since then , I've used ad block to keep my videos from being interrupted . The fact that RU-vid doesn't get paid for ads unless someone watches the whole thing or clicks on it is insane, especially as advertisers grow increasingly self-aware and cram as much as they can into the first five seconds or so. I have absolutely been influenced by ads before promptly skipping them. That's just straight up a bad business practice. I imagine it's easier to thrust the consequences of that onto consumers than risk losing advertisers by forcing them to pay more money, though. To be honest, I think they do a really, really bad job of advertising RU-vid Premium. They pushed super hard on it for a while when it was first introduced, and then gave up, so everyone I know sort of just ended up being annoyed by it / mocking it. Unfortunately, RU-vid also has to contend with the fact that no matter what unhanded tactics they pull to try to eradicate adblock or similar, it's not going to go away and not everyone is going to give up and buy premium. Personally, I feel as though there are other avenues they could attempt to try in order to earn more money before needing to resort to cutting creator income (though, I agree some youtube personalities are horribly overpaid for the quality of content they produce). However, they've done a real shit job of listening to the community for a long time, and probably don't really care that much as long as they can continue squeezing out as much money as possible while forcing the website to take a slow but steady death march. So. Y'know.
@SmallSpoonBrigade

It's kind of their own fault for selling their souls early on to elbow everybody else out of the market. In the traditional online advertising market you get a certain amount of money just for having your image viewed and another if you click through to the advertised site. They could have offered the equivalent of some small amount just for the placement and more money being paid if the viewer made it through the 30 seconds and the entire amount being paid if the viewer clicked the ad. It's a minor change, but one which would discourage some of the more obvious scams. I'm not sure why they're taking their own incompetence out on the people creating the products that the site is selling. The videos and the audience that comes for the videos.
@Reppercent

Advertiser here, that practice is pretty common, it's called 'true view'. Google search ads only charge advertisers when the person clicks the ad, Facebook/Insta only charges advertisers when they click an ad (unless campaign objective is set to brand awareness which isn't super common), so RU-vid would just exclude themselves from most businesses channel mix if they charged per impression instead of per click or full view, from an advertisers perspective, there's little to no value in paying for someone to watch 3-seconds of your ad.

As much as I would be inclined to leave RU-vid if (when) they counter-block adblockers (which I myself use), I'm not sure if I could properly replace RU-vid for what I use it for. By far the largest value I get out of RU-vid is easily accessible educational content, which I simply wouldn't have the money to pay for otherwise. There are also an immense amount of creators on the platform who I genuinely want to support, but again, money is an issue. As such, I support them by watching their content on RU-vid, listening to their music if they are a musical artist, and in some cases, recommending their content to people I know irl. I cannot describe the anger I feel at RU-vid, and at Google broadly, for the downstream effects that their terrible business model is soon to have. The fact that truly valuable, useful, and transformative content hosted on their platform for little to no cost is soon to be gatekept by money because some faceless shareholders need their profit for doing almost nothing to contribute.... they must be punished for this.

RU-vid was never designed to be a primary source of income; ad revenue was supposed to be a "thank you" vs a "here's your paycheck." Unfortunately, the idea that you could make a living off of such payments has resulted in more and more channels that make more and more clickbaity content, as they all fight for the same resource: the userbase's time.

I also use Premium. I mostly watch RU-vid and its long-form content, so I don't want ads. I recently had to let it go for about a week due to not having enough money at that moment to renew it and this platform became awful. All of my ads were for TikTok and Temu 😖. Mobile ad blockers can be finicky and I always see they have reviews about "You guys updated the app and now the ad block doesn't work!" I wanted to bypass all of that. I also like that since I can't afford to add on being a RU-vid Member for the channels I watch, nor can I afford to contribute to Patreon, at least my viewership gives more money to the creator than those who aren't using Premium. I can also now run my videos in the background, a feature you don't think you'll miss until you can't do it. The biggest reason people stopped watching cable TV was because of the ads. You get the privilege to not only spend hundreds of dollars per month to watch content but on top of it all if you are watching a show who's scheduled for one hour, you also get the pleasure of it being interrupted 4 to 5 times with ads lasting 4 to 3 minutes depending. So what did modern companies do ? The drug dealer approach. They give you a taste either for free or for a very low price and then once you are hooked, they milk you dry for all you are worth. Remember when Netflix claimed they would never put ads on their service ? Also the people who use an ad blocker are either somewhat tech savvy or found out that they existed when RU-vid decided to advertise them to the entire world that they existed for non savvy people. For the latter group, all they know is install it and let it be. Since even the FBI recommends to install ad blockers when surfing the web, those people won't know what white listing means so their ad blockers will always be on but yet will get penalized by RU-vid for their lack of knowledge which then turns into possible resentment from said group. What also doesn't help RU-vid and wasn't mentioned here is the ads themselves. When you have the majority of ads being suspect, scams or leading you to places filled with malware or installing it on their devices, that is a RU-vid problem, not a user problem. RU-vid is content with having thousands of people getting scammed so long as they are getting paid for it by the scammers. If RU-vid had better quality control, maybe the ad issue wouldn't be so pervasive.

In-video sponsorships could be brought down, but not in the system where people get shadow bans and yelly smelly in the least transparent way possible. RU-vid starts to shoot them down - and creators lose any means of stable income outside of whole videos being paid by some "charity" or "private fund". That's how it turned out to be - the add-on ads feed RU-vid (And pretty much only youtube because people are NOT paid ad revenue for short videos at all, 100% goes to youtube, plus good luck getting any video monetized in your favor when anybody can scam the system by fictional copyright claim (Many remix "artists" make remix of classics/simple sounds, then copystrike with monetization leech the parts which are essentially the thing they have no relation with. For example, your 2 hour video about Red Alert 2 gets claimed by some dubzzsoundgargleblaster whose composition contains 20 seconds of raw Frank Klepacky's Hell's march you used in the beginning. Things get extra stupid with sound banks stepping into the game. Someone records a pigeon, labels it and suddenly all pigeon sounds become a copyright danger, even if you recorded them by yourself. And winning a dispute does nothing. By the time you do it all money already gone since 95% of views have already come and gone. Sometimes gone with a shadow ban for too many copystrikes against you.
@SmallSpoonBrigade

Instead of making it free for them to display 30 seconds of ad to the user RU-vid should charge them for every second of advertisement they shove down our throats. End double ads and charge advertisers by the second length of the ad. This way we will have lots of 2-3 second ads that will just shout “BOUNTY” or “TIDEPODS” At us and we can get back to the video. The trouble with blocking Ad Blockers is that it is nearly impossible to detect them if they let the ads play in the background and then just trim them out from the video 'stream'. There are already YT players that do exactly that, in preparation of YT's blocking of ads and they are making more loss for YT as they 'pre-cache' all the videos that would show up in ones feed to provide seamless, ad-less watching experience in case they decide to watch one of those. Thus, YT is paying bandwidth for both the video and the ad that has a high chance that nobody will watch.

When I first started watching youtube regularly, it was through a browser on a PC connected to my TV so I actually wasn't even aware of the ads until watching something on my phone RU-vid app. That experience was unpleasant. I've been served the adblocker threat by RU-vid and resolved it already, without them getting any money from me. The problem I have is that if I pay for premium, there's still the reality that videos get demonetized and creators are forced to play it safe. While I expect a certain degree of moderation to keep Nazis and whatnot away, a RU-vidr should be able to make a fact based documentary on, say, the Middle East without the threat of losing revenue.

So here's a question: What would happen if people started clicking on every youtube ad, then just close that new tab immediately? That costs the advertiser money on every click, but with this behavior, maybe only 1 in 1,000,000 clicks leads to an actual purchase (probably fewer). Not a good ROI for the advertiser. But YT couldn't really discourage or stop this behavior, because it is the exact behavior they are optimizing for the user to do. Suddenly the advertiser is paying for every time their ad runs even though all of the clicks are "false positives". Kind of a little FU to each advertiser, and ultimately to YT as advertisers become unwilling to pay as high of a rate for ads knowing that the resulting clicks don't yield revenue. PS: most ad blockers will block the actual site from the ad from opening. I don't know if it's the click on YT's platform that triggers the revenue, or the landing on the advertiser's page, but if it is the former, YT is still billing the advertiser and paying the channel, but the user is guaranteed to not make a purchase because the target site doesn't even open.

I love TLDR! It'd be so cool to have HowMoneyWorks on Nebula, I would have no reason to check RU-vid anymore.

Yeah it might be the way to go at this point

Nebula is probably fine, but most of the content I'm watching is from smaller creators that aren't allowed to post to that site. There's little point in me subscribing when so many of the creators I follow are autistic and don't have a large enough audience to get noticed and invited over. Which isn't the worst thing in the world if you want solid creators that are doing mainstream stuff, but if you're mostly using RU-vid for less common content, then it's a waste of money.

I have nebula. I really enjoy it. I got a deal where I had a month of curiosity stream free which was also pretty cool. Keep an eye out. I still see that deal advertised sometimes.

Personally I pay for Premium and use the music feature as well (plus Premium also allows the same to be used by my less technically minded family members). I do use sponsporblock on the otherhand. The way I see it is I would pay for free videos by watching ads. However I have paid to remove the ads so I expect to see no ads. So if there is a sponsor there, it's the same as an ad and it should be removed. It also helps because I doubt sponsors have a way of knowing if their segment got skipped. That said I when people complain about RU-vid potentialy blocking ad-blockers I have always held the same basic principle: you have options given to you. Either accept the ads as they are, pay for Premium or stop using RU-vid and go to a competitor. They exist. Whether or not they have the creators you watch or if they require a subscription (most of them do) should be irrelevant to the equation here if the ads are that bad.

One of the reasons that I refuse to pay for Premium is because of what they did with Google Music. They had a great app that could play music just fine. Then they decided to force everybody off of the app in order to charge a fee for playing our own music and running ads on our own music as well. To make matters worse, they took away just basic music player functions in order to force people to pay for a subscription even if they weren't listening to licensed content.

Seriously, Premium is literally one of the best subscriptions I pay for. The value proposition is so high. I waste less of my time on ads I don't want to see, and I support the creators I watch. Easy win. The only exception is maybe Spotify Premium, and frankly, only reason I have both Spotify and RU-vid at the same time is because I like both services separately.

RU-vid is getting so much worse with constant interruptions with ads. It’s on purpose to buy their premium! Ugh smh I hate it so much

RU-vid should allow small creators to put their videos under a paywall. The main problem with youtube is dealing with people that want something for nothing, such as wanting tons of videos without ads or wanting tons of content from creators even though they don't support them in any way. RU-vid needs to let these customers go if it wants to survive as a business, having billions of freeloaders on a website is not a good business strategy.

I gave in a long time ago and became the 1% that pays for premium. With the amount I use it I actually spend more time watching ads than I would working half an hour a month to afford the cost. It'll be sad to see google ditch ad blockers.

There are adblock browsers like Brave and Librewolf. 🤔

This channel is the most researched channel that uploads content regularly that i watch every upload. This is fantastic work. You may not be the best, but you don't claim to be, you tie your answers with articles and sources. I am taking notes, because the way you do youtube is the way convince people thta what you are saying is right!

This video is brilliantly metaphorical. The ad and some fake news is the result of how RU-vid has become this shitty. And this comment being on your SPAM comment section is too...
