Whytner ARC-14S Portable Air Conditioner Cleaning and Disassembly

Got a used portable AC and it had a weird smell. It was full of crud on the inside. The metal condenser fins also needed to be cleaned. I used the following:
Home Depot -
AC-Safe Air Conditioner Foaming Coil Cleanser ~$7
3/4" High-Density Rubber Foam Weatherstrip Tape ~$6
Formula 1" x 2 ft Rigid Foam Board Insulation Sheathing (R-5) ~$7
Harbor Freight - 6" magnetic hex bit extension ~$6
I also had a 3" extension, so had 9" total when connected. I needed it for the bottom rear screws because my screw driver was getting in the way and I couldn't turn it without falling off the screw.

Definitely recommend a 12” to 16” magnetic Philips screwdriver. Otherwise, I got mine all cleaned out! Reservoir was not exhausting enough water… hoping after getting a lot of dirt and dust out of it the airflow will be much better. Thanks for the video.

@@smokebomba Did you have to rinse off the condenser? All products I found for coil cleaning stated the condenser had to be rinsed, the evaporator coil, not necessary. What was the rinsing process like with all the electronics inside?

Is there any sign that the outside intake distributes air into the room, or does all cool air come from the room? Thanks

The outside intake goes directly into the unit. There is minimal leakage though you could put AC tape around if you’re really worried. I think the bigger concern is that the window insert is uninsulated. I bought foam board and foam tape for that

Yeah it wasn't easy for me. You have to kind pull at it, especially around where the hoses are. I showed where all the screws and stuff are in the video so if you've take those out it'll eventually come off. Good luck!

How did you remove the back? I unscrewed the two middle screws and pulled the left and right sides apart but the back cover still seems stuck.

You have to remove all the screws I show in the vid. Then when you remove the 2 front middle ones the sides move freely. The area where the vents are probably where you’re feeling it’s stuck. Pull up and back at the same time and it’ll kind of pop off. Sorry didn’t think about recording until I had already disassembled everything

I have the same ac and I have to drain it out every hour or so. What would you recommend please?

Wow that is a lot of water, I don't have that problem. I'd try elevating it and use a hose to dump it in a 5 gallon bucket. Since it's generating so much water maybe you can try making a siphon to continuously dump the water outside. You probably want a thin hose so it slowly drains and the siphon doesn't stop ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CZmP0vsRBZ8.html
