I bought my Whynter ARC-14SH 3 years and 10 months ago. I never had a problem with it. It cools my bedroom very nicely in the hot Southern California summer. This portable AC is built like a tank, but you still have to do some very basic maintenance to keep your AC happy.See what you need to do.
Do you need to drain a portable air conditioner?
In most cases, your portable air conditioner will not need to be drained. Edgestar, Avallon and Koldfront portable air conditioners use a condensation exhaust system to expel water vapor collected during the dehumidifying/cooling process. This moisture is released through the exhaust hose along with hot exhaust air.
In extremely humid conditions, however, the water collected during this process cannot be exhausted quickly enough and may fill the internal water reservoir. When this occurs, the unit will automatically shutoff to avoid overflowing the internal tank. Your specific unit may display an error code, alarm or indicator light when this condition occurs. When this situation does occur you will need to drain the internal water tank. Each specific model has its own instructions for draining this internal tank.

Just got a 14S and it works amazingly well. Got tired of the landlord putting crap ACs in here that last a year or 2. So I invested in a good portable.

Don't blow the dust IN to the coils. Vacuum it out gently, taking care not to bend the fins. You can use a brush attachment on your vacuum hose, and brush WITH the fins, not across them. If it's still dirty, you can get a can of coil cleaner and use a soft bristle brush, again working vertically with the fins, not across them.

I was specifically looking on how to get to the coil that is visible through the hose connections. When i take the front cover off its still unreachable in the back. But I did enjoy the video. I think I'm going to get up can of that no rinse coil cleaner and just spray it from the hose connections mine has also been a great air conditioner although recently it is not as efficient as it used to be due to so much dust on both coils

@Woopnik
@Woopnik 3 года назад
Hello Jean. If this “black stuff” is indeed black mold, you must discard your old hoses and replace them with new ones. You should replace both hoses at the same time. Here is a link to a replacement hose on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Whynter-ARC-EH-TYPE-S-diameter-Portable-Conditioner/dp/B0048ELAB2/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=whynter+arc-14sh+hose+replacement&qid=1620151868&sr=8-3 I hope I was of any help. @@Woopnik I don't understand why he must throw away the mold-infected hose. He could take it outside and hose down the hose from both ends and let it dry. The hose is made of plastic. If there is mold, it grows out of the organic material deposited on the hose.

i like that youre making videos to help ppl out but wiping a machine isnt maintenance lol and you shouldnt use a air dust blower on the air vent as it is blowing the dust further in.you could use a small brush with a vacuum to get all the dust out. Here are my tips for those with this unit: get a washable air filter and a carbon activated air filter. cut them both to size and put it on the filter frame . you can also put them on the air intake tubing(the one that brings air from the outside). if you put it on the intake tube, MAKE SURE you make a grill piece out of aluminum mesh so the filter doesnt go in the unit as it could cause damage. if you have to drain the unit daily, it's bc humidity is high. when it rains and when its really cold i disconnect the air intake tube(that brings air from the outside) and cover the tube(not the machine) with a thick towel so theres no cold air coming in from the outside. when doing this, the unit isnt bringing cold/humid air in and doesnt require to be drained daily, also the unit works less to heat up a room. the heater on this isnt all too great when its 40 degrees out. the bad side is that it isnt bringing fresh air in but i only do this when its really cold and/or rainy. to drain mine: i also have a rubber hose connected to the drain plug that has a valve on the end. i just have to open the valve and drain it onto a pan. when it rains my unit can hold alot of water and unit stops working until i drain it. i've had mine for a few years as well and my air grill looks new and machine works great. here are some links of the filters i mentioned. www.amazon.com/Holmes-Carbon-Filters-HAPF60-Filter/dp/B000063SKE/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1540068885&sr=8-14&keywords=carbon+filter www.amazon.com/Duck-Replacement-Conditioner-24-Inch-1285234/dp/B002GKC2US/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&qid=1540069164&sr=8-30&keywords=washable+air+filter

Can I install a drip line that will constantly flow into a drain? (for server room using Drop ceiling plenum for exhaust air) The room shares a common wall with the kitchen, I'd rather drain constantly as opposed to having to drain.
@Woopnik
@Woopnik 5 лет назад
Hello Manley. I found that the unit does a good job of evaporating the collected water unless the ambient humidity in the room was extremely high. The Whynter ARC-14S/SH does not have a condensate pump feature that can pump out (and up) water through a drain hose. I really don’t think that you have to drain the unit permanently. The only other thing I can come up with is the Whynter Portable Air Conditioner Drain Bucket. The drain bucket is for use with manual drainage as needed. But Whynter does not recommend leaving the drain plug off! Let me know if you have anymore questions. Have a good day. 😀

My plug melted near the prong and is running very hot, I don't feel safe having the unit plugged in. I was running it through a heavy duty power chord, and I suspect either the power chord or the unit power chord is the culprit (not the wall socket). Its looking like the best thing to do is replace the plug, but I'm having difficulty finding information on how to do that. Do you know where I should start? A repair service seems out of the question.

@Woopnik
@Woopnik 5 лет назад
No, I am sorry. I did not make a video how to take off the shell of the Whynter ARC-14SH. This is something only a trained AC professional should do. I have already broken my share of items in my life, for example 2 brand new Dyson vacuums, but it is also warm in Los Angeles and I cannot risk to break that one too. But I have directly from Whynter a set-by-step description with pictures how to do that. Please email me at zurek@myfastmail.com and I will reply with the PDF file. 😀
@Woopnik
@Woopnik 5 лет назад
There are only two cylinder shaped fans, like a hamster wheel, in the AC. Unless something hard is falling into the rotating which will destroy them, I cannot think 🤔 of any situation where the fans are breaking. People who write to me when their fans are destroyed tell me that their children dropped a toy inside.

Can I unplug the condensation stopper and just put a permanent drainage hose on it that extends out the window with the other hoses?
@Woopnik
@Woopnik 4 года назад
During the process of cooling, some water will be extracted from the air into the unit. Most ofthis water is used to cool and exhausted to the outside. If the unit is operated in high humidity or low temperature environment, water will collect in the reservoir inside the unit. I am living in Los Angeles where the humidity is very low, therefore I have only drained condensation water only once from the unit as long as I own it. But you must manually drain the water from the unit by positioning a flat container or dish under the drain plug. You cannot connect a drainage hose to the Whynter ARC-14SH because it does not have a built-in drain pump outlet. Other kinds of Whynter AC’s have such a built-in drain pump outlet like the Whynter Elite 12000 BTU Dual Hose Digital Portable Air Conditioner.

@Woopnik
@Woopnik 4 года назад
Hello Konen. The intake hose is not optional. If you don’t use the intake hose the AC will take the air out of the room where the AC is located which creates low air pressure in the room and warm air from outside the room is coming in to equalize the air pressure. Having warm air coming into the room defeats the purpose of having a portable AC. I hope I was of any help. Have a good evening. 😀

That's normal. Part of an air conditioners job is to remove humidity from the air. I have this model and I easily have to drain mine twice a day (in the southern U.S.) when using full time. I usually get a quart+ out of it each time i drain and if I don't I quickly notice the temp creeping up. This really makes these portables a PITA for regular use... at least window units place the bulk of the noise outside and you don't have to worry about draining them.
