yes, the producers said it would have cost more to most of it in CGI than to build the actual sets, so yeah the sets are real but the background is not.
The lake, the boat, the train, the university sets, the effigy, parts of the Oz head, and much more are all practical effects. They even planted like a million tulips for this movie. Short of building a literal city of emerald stone and training monkeys to fly, there's not much more that can be done "practically."
Galinda is very much a spoiled narcissist in the beginning of the story and eventually begins to mature and grow into a more well-rounded person through her friendship with Elphaba.
yep! she does act immature and spoiled in the beginning but she develops a ton through her understanding and time with Elphaba. Galinda goes through alot of character growth and ultimately becomes the sweet "Glinda" that you know her as. One of the musical numbers near the end has Galinda singing about how she feels like she has been "changed for good" because she met her.
For the life of me, I will never understand why so many people, particularly people who purport to be WICKED fans, are upset about it being two movies. They're giving it room to breathe, they're fleshing things out, they're giving us MORE--what's to be upset about???
It's sort of a Rory Gilmore and Paris Geller relationship between the two witches (ie. Introduced as academic rivals in university, who gradually grow closer as the musical progresses, with some complications). I'm still bummed it's split into two, but I'm excited for Part 1!

I've seen the show and read the books and had to keep reminding myself that they are two very different stories from each other to be able to relax and just enjoy each on its own. The books were so much more in depth and political and the musical just wasn't. It was a very good musical, but it's like they took the core setup from the books and made a musical fanfiction about it, changing lots of details. Glinda was never that involved with Elphaba, even while they were in school. She was the popular it girl who begrudgingly tried to take Elphaba under her wing, but it didn't last past school once Elphaba took off on her own. They seemed to have an ongoing respect for each other that grew through the books, turned into a more caring friendship way later on, but the musical is sooo far different from that. They cut other characters way back if not out completely, then pushed more Glinda in there to be some sort of girl power thing. I liked it, but it took me a while to remind myself to view it as a totally different story.
I still think ariana isn’t fit for the role. She’s doing a Kristen impersonation to why it almost sounds like Kristen in the movie. If that was the case Dove Cameron should’ve gotten the role and Lea Michele if they wanted the Broadway OG feeling
I've seen the musical a few times, and one key thing about Elphaba reading older is that she doesn't come to Shiz until her younger sister Nessa ready to matriculate. So she *is* literally older than everyone else in her year, and is only there as a companion/caretaker for Nessa (which is part of the reason why there's no dorm set up for her).
The age gap is mis-judged. Elphaba is at Shiz to accompany her younger sister Nessarose, who you see in the wheelchair. She is a fascinating character. Nessa and Glinda are the same age, Elphie is older and notnmeant to be studying at all, you see Morrible take Elphie under her wing. This movie looks perfect i can't wait 💚
In the original she did not start off as the Galinda you know from the OZ story. Watching her grow and turn into Galinda the Good is a wonderful journey.
As someone who has seen the show, it’s very back & forth with who the “villain” is because the story isn’t really told in chronological order. Elphaba is supposed to be older because she comes in as the caretaker for her younger sister. Galinda is seen as the “antagonist” towards the beginning because she is pit against Elphaba in school. ALSO: the first half of the show is considered the prequel to Wizard of Oz and the second half takes place during and after the events of the Wizard of Oz, so two films make sense when there is that much story to tell. Plus Defying Gravity as a closing number is just so satisfying, in my opinion.
I don't think it will be the closing number for the movie. Just the first half if they want to make sense chronologically and also stay true to the show
@@joshuafoster8726 even chronologically, Defying Gravity makes the most sense as the finale for the part one film. it happens just before intermission & they would be dumb to not have that be what the audience is left with for the year before the second part releases.

Question, because I honestly do not know, out of ignorance. You spelled the character’s name as “Galinda,” as some people pronounce it (even in the trailer), but the character’s name is actually, “Glinda.” Is there a reason for the two? Thanks in advance.
@@ErnwaldoIn the musical, her name is Galinda but Dr Dillamond - the goat professor - mispronounces it as “Glinda”. I don’t know how extensive your knowledge of the plot is but she renames herself Glinda in Dr Dillamond’s honour. I don’t want to spoil too much for you.

If you were watching the trailer, you can, obviously, see that GaLinda (before Glinda) bonds with Elphaba, and no longer stays mean to her… if you were watching the trailer.
They literally built most of Shiz and Munchkinland, I think maybe your lack of understanding of the material is making you a bit cynical here. And as others have said below, Elphie being older than other is canonically accurate
In regard to the costumes I’ve seen RU-vidrs who have seen the musical say the movie has taken the cue from the broadway costumes. I haven’t seen the full musical (just clips), but overall this world has a very steampunk vibe.
Shiny CGI nonsense?! It’s mostly real! The sets are HUGE! They literally planted millions of tulips for certain shots! This is OLD SCHOOL movie making with masters of their craft working in all departments!

I was gonna be a new subscriber for your channel BUT once you mentioned that BOTH of y'all have NOT seen the musical, I nearly stabbed my eyeballs with my wicked broom. I mean HOW DARE YOU DENY YOURSELVES the opportunity to see this musical, ESPECIALLY, if you're gonna critique the trailers. Your ain't doing yourselves any favor by not paying the ticket each so y'all get to see it. Otherwise, I just started to cringe at your novice comments and the guessing game y'all are playing simply because y'all just too busy to find one close to your home. I'm a musical fanatic and everytime Wicked comes to Los Angeles I make sure to take either my family or friends to see it. I try not to miss it. In fact, since the pandemic I moved up to Northern California and I was just goggling if the musical was playing this year anytime soon.....and BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! The musical starts playing at the end of August this year until end of Sept in San Francisco which is about 45 minutes drive from where I'm living. And since it's my Birthday month in August I'm definitely taking a few friends who haven't seen the show to see it with me. So please please please hurry up and find it somewhere near you and take your big arses to see it because your very first critique Ms. Thing about the movie was that it looked like it was overly CGI done...but you see us regulars don't think that because the movie producer or writer had already come out a few weeks back and told us they were trying to avoid the heavy use of CGI so they literally build the sets that you see in the movie...yep, again, we won't bitch because we were already told about producers moving away from that CGI fake look so they manually build each set by hand....can you believe it?? Also...I was getting annoyed by your second guessing different characters and this and that. BTW, if you'd seen the play, you would have known that Glinda was totally the opposite of the Wizard of Oz portrayal...in other words, Alphaba was the good witch in Wicked whereas, Glinda was the pompous spoilt and Wicked witch herself. So their portrayal and characters were of the opposites from Dorothy's ... Also, one thing to pay attention to was that the current image of the Witch as we know it be (wearing all black, black cape, pointy black hat, and flying broom,) ALL became known characteristics of the Witch from this movie Wicked. In other words, before Glinda suggested and gave her black ensemble for Alphabas outfit were all of Glinda's mean ideas!! So before that Witches never wore Black, not had flying brooms, nor black cape since it was cold outside!! Just some fun facts!!
i only knew Wicked from the soundtrack for a long time, and honestly the plot i invented in my head was completely different from the actual plot of the musical. there's so much that's either easy to miss or impossible to know from just the songs. part of me is annoyed about the two parts but i think this story will really benefit from having two films' worth of time to breathe. it gives them time to show stuff that you just have to take on faith when you see it on stage.
She absolutely NAILS the good witch from the theatre musical she is going to do an absolutely phenomenal job and I'm not the biggest fan of her personally.
“I thought Glinda was supposed to be nice” Yes because characters can totally have an arc or development if they stay exactly the same throughout the entire story. Seriously, even for someone who isn’t familiar with the musical, this is such a weird criticism to have, that’s just storytelling 101
