Blog episode, making a start on drawer boxes on the kitchen. Starting with the really tall drawer which means wide boards. Getting the dovetails cut before the boards warp means they are easier to process.

I have the same jig, havent used it in a few years, not sure I even remember how to properly use it anymore. Great bit of kit though! Excellent work, as ever.

That sander just runs and runs. I use to own one. Retired now. Knot burns can sometimes be reduced by passing the board through again, but the other way round.

Well Ollie it just doesn’t get any better than that mate them joints are perfect but why did you get rid of that? Lovely knot? Had to kept that in myself all part of the beauty of the wood when you’re doing the dovetail joints you make it look so easy. I still can’t get my head around using that jig even now and I’m in my 60s great content mate thanks Ollie 😊😊

Haha thanks Carl. It's just a bit too much dead wood for this kitchen. Judging the style and taste of the owner, it was far too country/rustic. I'd have it in my gaff absolutely

Can't believe you got rid of that beautiful knot Ollie. Looked gorgeous to me, especially around 06:00 when it looked like a sneaky animal face!

That's a fantastic jig, I watched Matt Cremona the other week hand cutting dovetails for 19 drawers I think, that's time of his life he'll never get back, why bother when you can use a jig like that. I'm not slagging Matt off here; he's an excellent joiner, just a bit too traditional at times...

Because the leigh jig cannot do narrow dovetails like you can by hand
@harkinjames

I prefer the narrower dovetails too, machine can’t do them

jigs like this can definitely save a lot of time and effort! It's all about finding the right balance between tradition and efficiency

As a Canadian I am happy to see Leigh (Canadian company) used Robertson screws on the jig.... I HATE phillips screws! I wish the US would either go Robertson or even torx, just NOT phillips.
@ljones396
@ljones396 3 месяца назад
What about pozi? That's all we use here in the UK really (bar the odd torx fancy screws from Timco, and the occasional slot head for more traditionally faced, brass furniture). Robertson is more or less unheard of here, although I can definitely appreciate its appeal.

@@ljones396 I thought pozi and torx were pretty much the same?

@@ljones396I.M.O pozi is better than Phillips, torx is better than pozi and Robertson is the best of all. It's not an accident that Kreg went with Robertson for their Kreg screws. They never cam out, 👍💪🔨🇮🇪🇮🇪
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 месяца назад
The Robertson will never reach the general screw as they grab the bit too much. Posi is perfect for that job, just needs a bit of care at all times. Only goes wrong after it's slipped once. I prefer the kreg Robertson over the torx pocket screws as you can lock the screw on a bit and feed it under a plinth to screw a face frame on. Much easier than torx where the screw is loose

I may well be in a minority of a very few but I find very little attractive or necessary about a dovetail joint on drawers. They are just not needed and, I suggest, are often included to satisfy the ego of the maker “look at how I can make a dovetail. That makes me a real woodworker” Form and function. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. The need for a dovetail on drawers is no longer there; if you really want a mechanical joint, then there are several ways of achieving this without exercising the ego. I bought a Leigh jig a maybe 5 years ago. It’s never been used in anger. I hated the look of the one practice piece I made. To me, it looks ugly. It isn’t needed. If someone living near West Kent wants to buy a very nearly new Leigh super jig in a custom box, then reply to this and make me an offer. I can’t remember if it’s the 18” or 24.” Version but, if someone is interested, I will dig it out. I will certainly never use it.

I've just purchased one of these leigh dovetail jigs. Can i please ask how many sets of fingers you have with yours? Did you buy extra fingers? Im wanting to do wide boards but there seems not to be enough fingers to go across the whole jig .
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 месяца назад
I did but one extra set, but you can space them out and have the narrow pins with a bigger gap between them which looks better too. Depends how wide the drawer is! The plastic rod is for when you space the pins apart any amount to support the router
