Wiesel Tank - German mini battle tank that has been proven in Afghanistan and Somalia

The Wiesel is a German light air-transportable armoured fighting vehicle, more specifically a lightly armoured weapons carrier. The vehicle was named Wiesel ("weasel") because of its small size and agility, which make it very difficult to detect on the battlefield.
tank wiesal awalnya was developed for the German Army to meet a requirement for an air-transportable light armored vehicle for use by its airborne troops, as the infantry of the German Bundeswehr, especially airborne infantry, were considered unprepared to successfully fight enemy main battle tanks (MBT) in the 1970s. The Wiesel was finally introduced as new weapon system for the Bundeswehr with deliveries beginning in the late 1980s.

I can see how these could be very effective, in certain instances. say you have 4 of them.. 2 with the 20mm cannons.. 1 mortar rig, and one set up with atgms... that would be a force to be reckoned with, especially if it was inserted in a strategic manner, with speed and surprise on its side.
@eponra8988
@eponra8988 Год назад
as these never operate alone (read: more than one wiesel. Infantry also operates along with them), that would be a realistic setup. There is also a MILAN/MELLS-version of it. So if you think you made out a single wiesel with a gun, and you´re in a proper tank, you´re maybe already targeted by a MILAN-carrying Wiesel.

Ive once heard a story of a soldier who told that during a practice with the french military 2 Wiesels with TOW were able to keep an entire unit of a dozen french MBTs at distance by constantly having one reload in cover behind a house while the other fired ATGMs at the MBTs. No clue how reliable that source is and if it may have been exageratted in numbers, but those Wiesels definitely have some worth if deployed well

@Uncle_Smallett
@Uncle_Smallett Год назад
Hmmm. Soviets did. On maneuvers, but still - they did. BMD-1/2 (73mm/30mm cannon) and Nona-S (120mm low-pressure universal cannon/launcher/mortar) can be airdropped on special platforms with rocket brakes, without crew/ammo. So could BTRs and BMPs, but they hasnt special suspension adjusters so likely lose part of wheels... or break something else. Despite danger, they were dropped from planes few times during maneuvers back in USSR.
@tomsmith3045
@tomsmith3045 Год назад
The US did it, too! They dropped Sheridan tanks from C-130's with the LARPS system. Which from the videos I've seen looked pretty terrifying. I don't think they ever did that in combat, but I do believe they flew in Sheridans in C-130's after taking the airport during the invasion of Panama in the 80's. C-130's can land at just about any airport, including grass strips, unlike anything that could carry an MBT.

Actually these don't get dropped with a parachute. But they are so small that 2 of them fit into a medium sized helicopter. Dropping them with a parachute has been tried but after multiple have been destroyed it was concluded that carrying them with a helicopter is more practical.

The last time I saw one of these in operation was in 2006 in Baumholder, Germany where I was stationed as an Infantry Senior NCO. My family and I were driving along the highway to Friesen, Germany on our way to K town when a Weasel pulled onto the road in what appeared to be a turret less weasel driven by a civilian who I’m guessing were maintenance crews working on the nearby bird choppers….I mean wind turbines. I was doing 60 MPH and it pulled out and took of in front of me like it had a turbo on that little Opel engine! It easily got up to 55 MPH (approximately) and after a mile or so it pulled off to the next turbine. I still remember the grin on the drivers face and the other guy in the turret ring laughing. To own one of these beasts would be sweet. The good thing about small, powerful vehicles like this is that they can navigate through terrain people would never expect a military to consider as a route. It’s low profile makes it simple to camouflage with local vegetation so it looks like a rolling bush. If they’re ever concerned about being spotted, they simple pull off the road and drive into a clump of bushes so only the turret is exposed above the bush.

I served in the Army from 1983-2009 and we use the metric system on everything we do. The only Imperial system use is from anything mechanical. When I fire my weapons or call for artillery strikes, it’s all in metric. For engineering, the metric system is far better. The sad part of living in any European country is how expensive everything there is, I pay $2.55 for 3.6 liters of gasoline/petrol while europe puts so much tax on their gas it comes out to around $9 USD per 3.6 liters! And the Europeans pay the same price for their oil as we do, European petrol is not special.

When one of them self destructed near Baumholder it was during a bad wind storm and a blade broke off, went flying high into the air and came down and stuck into the ground like a knife while another blade went sailing a couple hundred meters away. So bullshit? I go with what I’ve seen and KNOW.

2:18 That gun is a TOW missile launcher. A Wiesel with a TOW missile is an insane combo. Oh my God. With a trained operator, that'd kick ass in Ukraine. That's genius. Ukrainian terrain, Imo, would be perfect for a Wiesel. They'd have the ability to quickly pop up, take a shot, and hide again-- 'fire and forget' doctrine. They're fast/armored enough to punch through Russian infantry to get a better shot at targets of interest, and they're small enough to avoid mud problems and can maneuver on roadways with ease. I'd have to think that a Wiesel with a TOW would kill a a T-72 almost every time at a longer range. Using Soviet armor tactics against them lol. They should make an AI powered model that can act like a force multiplier, where a single manned Wiesel can control multiple autonomous Wiesels.

i see this being HIGHLY useful in Ukraine, if it had a small plow on the front. it could be driven to a trench line and dig in on the spot, or disengaged from the front and moved at will. any issue of lack of armor would be nullified from the fact that it was dug in.
@sirxavior1583
@sirxavior1583 Год назад
Nah. The British Scorpion is already in Ukraine which is slightly more capable. Plus I doubt it would make it to Ukraine in time. First it will have to be approved by Germany and we've seen what a fiasco that is, then it will have to undergo maintenance and upgrades. By the time it makes it to Ukraine it will be September 2023 at the earliest.

@@sirxavior1583 what are you talking about. if germany wants to send them they can send them whenever they want. Even by sending leopard 2 tanks and even with the entire training it not even toke them 2 months. Without traning material is there not even a week after decision. by the way the scorpion is totally useless and cant be compared to the wiesel in any way, its a totally different type of wiesel its like comparing a ifv with a mbt. its 4 times heavier and has only 40 shots on 76mm. its a totally falsely chosen calibre to be used as infantry support. a wiesel has 20mm like a ifv, tow rockets, anti aircraft rockets, 120 mm mörser. how many of the 3000 produced scorpions did brittian give to ukraine?

If I have learned anything over the past 1-2 years, this needs to be upgraded to a drone platform! Launchpad and maintnance for rearment would be great for this tiny thing as it could be easily camouflaged. I can see that thing hiding in the foilage to spit out 5 drones that engage 3 MBTs at once. (In the future this could even be done automatically. Once there is a direct line of sight go for the tow and back into the dugout! I guess it can be damn hard to spot that thing!
