LaGrange is a little town about 30 miles east of Austin Texas where I am from. The song is about a bordello out in LaGrange called the Chicken Ranch. "they got a lot of nice girls, ha!" Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds filmed the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" in reference to said bordello there in 1982. The Chicken Ranch is no longer in existence. Imagine that!

Absolutely correct. You can still see some of the rubble that is left of the house on Google Earth. Me and a friend jumped the fence one night many years ago looking for artifacts with a metal detector. The neighbor across the street came running with a shotgun screaming at us, so we ran. Ahhh to be young again.

The main building of the Chicken Ranch was moved to upper Greenville Avenue in Dallas in 1977 and became the Chicken Ranch Restaurant with Miss Edna as hostess. Per The Chicken Ranch website: "The brothel was listed on the tax rolls as a poultry farm."

The bass line is amazing, another killer bass line from this band ZZ Top Thug
@funkyjbass7762
@funkyjbass7762 2 года назад
Its a straight forward bass line (when compared with like something Flea would put out), but it is simple, and the exact groove needed to allow the drums and especially guitar to do what they need to do. Not flashy, just solid like a steam train.
@robbasso893
@robbasso893 2 года назад
@@funkyjbass7762 I’m pretty sure Billy Gibbons, the guitarist, played the bass on Thug, instead of Dusty Hill, the actual bassist. That whole Eliminator album was drum machine and synthesizer, including the bass for most of the album, while Billy played guitar and sang. Linden Hudsen, a sound engineer buddy of the band, and Billy developed demos. Then Billy worked with Terry Mann, well renown engineer, to finalize tracks. You can find some of those demos on RU-vid, just look up Linden Hudsen/Hudson ZZ Top Eliminator Rehearsal Tapes. Linden did not get credited for his ideas and work with the band, however.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Deguello album! The cover art is my city San Antonio, TEXAS. The Battle of the Alamo. Deguello is the Spanish song played to the enemy as a psy op. It’s a beautiful sounding song usually played on trumpet. It means no quarter, no mercy, no prisoners, death to all. That’s exactly what Santa Anna’s overwhelming Mexican army did to the TEXAS defenders. Famously killed everyone. This made the TEXANS so angry, that at the battle of San Jacinto, they fought and defeated the Mexican army and made famous the battle cry: Remember The Alamo! It’s right in the middle of downtown and on this Z Z TOP album. It doesn’t get any more TEXAN than that.

GREAT song by ZZ. I have a fond memory of seeing them in concert. It was late afternoon in Tampa Stadium and it was HOT. ZZ was opening for Deep Purple. There's a backstory to this song! Read this in a magazine issue dedicated to this group. They were on a break in the studio and the lead singer was just fooling around with that intro and the voice. The engineers in the booth kept the tape rolling and turned around and signaled the band to keep going, keep going! After several takes they could never quite replicate the original intro so that's the one on the record release. Lesson! Always keep the tape rolling! You never know what might happen!

The Chicken Ranch brothel outside LaGrange was legendary among boys in Texas into the 1960's. For almost all, literally a legend, more a myth, since they would never see it. As was very roughly portrayed in the film, a crusading newspaper reporter in Houston stirred up enough to get it shut down. This was the era when similar things were happening. Galveston, the "open city", also known as Sin City, lost its self-declared law enforcement immunity and was nearly destroyed when the casinos and related enterprises were closed. For many, the reporter became a pariah. But it was mostly among people who had never seen the brothel and who did not recognize that it was as unpleasant a place as all such. Yet there was an awareness that an era of sorts was passing.

This album is one I used to listen to on my way to tend bar at a biker bar and Dee is right! A Harley all day every day! Anyway, this would get me pumped up to go sling drinks. It was the good old days. Believe it or don't, but there were certain people who carried pistols and I couldn't serve them a drink until they gave the gun to me and it went into a locked drawer. Fruitless if you ask me cause they got the pistol back at the end of the night after they were all liquored up. So, you ought to listen to anything off the Deguello album! You can't go wrong!
