We lost the bassist, Dusty Hill, last year. I never met him, but he was my neighbor. That amazing groove is the Texas shuffle, and the drummer, Frank Beard, is the absolute best at it.

MY ZZ TOP STORY: Many years ago my dad and I had a layover at the Memphis airport and met Dusty and Frank when my dad went out for a smoke. Of course I recognized them but I was surprised at how small they were (to be fair, I'm 6'5"). They were both very down-to-Earth and friendly as we spoke for a few minutes. There were other people coming and going but not a single person seemed to recognize them.

Finally, after all these years of watching them on video I got to see ZZ live just after Dusty passed. Elwood did okay, but without the stage interplay between Billy and Dusty it wasn’t anywhere near as good.

What I love the most about this performance is the level of complicity it showcases. While Billy and Dusty are goofing off in front of Frank, he just looks them straight in the eye from under his brows and goes about his business. And there's that smirk that says "I know what you're doing and it ain't gonna work". these guys have known each other for half a century, and it shows. That's what music is about for me, not reinventing the wheel at all times, no need to be trailblazing, just have fun and share it with everyone around you.

Did you listen to ZZ Top first album?
@boxonothing4087
@boxonothing4087 2 года назад
@@MusicHeartofMine2012 It's a decent one, but things weren't in place yet. Rio Grande Mud was a step in the right direction, but they really hit their stride with Tres Hombres. Fandango being an hybrid live/studio album makes it difficult to assess and Tejas suffers from being a good album stuck between two great ones since Deguello is arguably the second highlight in their career. El Loco has it's share of flaws, but it's still the last album I enjoyed. What came after was absolutely not to my taste. I think to this day that radio friendly boogie/blues rock done right is what Foghat did. It's a shame there's no video of a good performance for Honey Hush, because the one on their live album is red hot.

@@boxonothing4087 it was a sad day when I came to the conclusion that while I enjoyed a lot of ZZTop, I probably wasn’t going to buy another full album from them. La Grange is about an actual place, a brothel just outside of La Grange, Texas known as The Chicken Ranch. By the time the song had come out, the brothel had been closed by the county. The brother was also the subject of the musical "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas". Billy Gibbons is singing in the style of John Lee Hooker here (it comes out better on the studio version with Gibbons' younger, somewhat rangier voice). La Grange is perhaps the band's shortest track and certainly the track with the least number of verses.

Hes been gone since I was a baby but we still have his Harley motorcycle and ZZ Top albums. The kind of lifestyle he loved to live correlates with ZZ Tops music, gosta get paid, beer drinkers hell raisers...my Dad said he loved the laugh in the beginning of this song. This is why I utterly love the blues. It's at once simple, yet complicated, flashy and yet down to earth, maximum expression and emotion with only a handful of notes and a few barre chords. This is just a basic I-III-IV progression in Am with an Am pentatonic solo (plus a few passing tones and "blue notes" for flavor), but the attitude and feel is what makes it all work so well. Timeless simplicity.

I remember BB said in one interview that hi is not quick as same lads, so he need to find another way - the bends and vibratos to go fast where hi wants. Billy have same idea - u can see that he barely moves his left hand up or down of the neck he finds everything that he needs on one spot. It is very simple and in the same time ingenious.

Legend has it Billy ran a few round around the studio building in the cold, cold weather (at the time of the original recording), and then he came back in and sang it. If you compare his vocals here to the studio vocals (I know you want them to be as live as possible, but…) you can clearly hear they're significantly less gravelly here.

I'm always amazed at Billy Gibbons' ability to improvise over one chord. He does it a lot. I'm not a great improviser, but when I do it I need the chord changes to give it movement. Billy can stay in one place and keep it musical, which is a very rare talent. You meantion BB King a few times, and I'm sure you're familiar with his "blues growl" singing. But he did a version of "Don't Get Around Mush Anymore" as a guest vocalist with Duke Ellington, which really shows off what a good singer he was.
