What is REALLY sad is that so many Prog enthusiasts in the US have never heard of them. They haven’t played in the US to my knowledge in over 20 years, but they consistently put out the BEST music every 5 years or so ! Thank you for featuring them !

IQ is my absolutely favorite band. Listen to anything on EVER, but "Further Away" is what i consider to be their masterpiece! Give it a listen ... a work of art!!! I think their classic lineup of Holmes, Orford, Jowitt, Cook and Nichols produced my favorite works, but they're amazing from any point. You two are huge fun!

IQ's primary influence (along with most of the 80s neo prog bands) is none other than your new favorites GENESIS! I'd love to see you react to what many consider their uniquely IQ'ish homage to Supper's Ready called 'Harvest of Souls'! Another personal favorite that I just know will touch your hearts is 'Constellations' from The Road of Bones

Hi ! Little challenge for you : They made a concept album (Subterranea) which IMO is at least the same level as The Lamb from Genesis. This represents 2x 50 minutes + listening but this kind of jewel must be listened to from start to end to get the quintescence of it. Will you be able to react maybe first half then the other ? Not a lot of reaction channels will make this. For sure this represents long videos but I do think IQ fans in particular and prog die hards in general will be in heaven with this. It would be pleasant if you react to separated tunes from this album anyway, but reacting to first half as a whole then the second would be really great. hope you'll consider this some day ! Keep up with spreading good taste to the world ! Cheers from France.

I've never understood the need to immediately discuss what other bands a newly discovered band sound like. It is a given that if the new band falls within a particular genre, they are going to sound like other bands within the same genre, not because they are derivative of the other bands, but because they follow the norms of the genre. Having said that, IQ certainly tried to produce music closely related to what classic Genesis produced, and Peter Nicholls adopted stage theatrics similar to those of Peter Gabriel, performing with his face completely painted, as did Fish with Marillion in their early years. The musicians with both those bands had grown up adoring the music of Genesis and wanting to create the same sort of magic for the listener. I love the music of IQ, but would prefer to note how it differs from anything that came before it rather than dis its creativity by claiming it is derivative of what came before it. Peter Nichols voice is unique and emotionally compelling. Mike Holmes is the most overlooked great guitarist out there being ignored nowadays. Those two are the core of IQ, while the drummers, keyboardists, and bassists have changed over the years. The key to being a great band is to have great compositions, and I think most of the songs of IQ flow from the minds of Nichols and Holmes. The music of IQ is labeled "symphonic prog", and the label is very accurate. The things which set them apart from other symphonic prog bands are, in my mind, the lyrics and what I feel is some deliberate progginess in their songs which interrupt their natural flow. The lyrics are about as obtuse and poetic as you can get in a song without being named Jon Anderson. 90% of the time I have no idea what Nichols is singing about, but it sure sounds nice. In many songs the drumming seems strange to me, as if the drummer deliberately misses a beat just so you'll notice it's not there. Or the time signature changes subtly just for the sake of a change, and only for a moment. The music is so smooth overall that some of the transitions just don't work for me. The song would have been better without those prog affectations, which seem to have been shoe-horned into a very lovely song just to meet the definition of prog. These are all nit-picks, though, on my part. I love the music of IQ. My favorites include; "The Wake" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C8aKokqQDJA.html (from 1984! Nichols' singing was a bit unpolished when he started out); "The Seventh House" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wCDnQTWQ8Ls.html (A brilliant anti-war diatribe presented against the backdrop of WW I veterans; Nichols in face paint) "Guiding Light" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9uLauUUIMOU.html (How has your first love fared over the decades? What if things had been different?)

The most beautyful in this song, I think, is that the theme played by the acoustic guitar in the middle section is the same as the start of the electric guitar solo (that then improvises on that theme) at the end. I just think that works so good. BTW, other band suggestions (in the realm of IQ and Marillion) are Arena and Pendragon.
@MrHistorian123
@MrHistorian123 11 месяцев назад
Arena - incredible albums like Contagion and The Visitor. Pendragon - fantastic, especially The Masquerade Overture. Collage (Polish) Moonshine is absolutely gorgeous. Pallas - The Dreams of Men is brilliant. Satellite (a spin off of Collage) - Evening Games is wonderful. La Tulipe Noire - Shattered Image is phenomenal. Marillion - several incredible albums, but Seasons End is the best. IQ - magnificent, especially Dark Matter, The Wake and Subterranea. Enjoy!
