See how Nick (🇩🇪) shows Lex (🇺🇸/🇲🇽) another song of a band she's growing very fond of... and at the same time he is, too! Pink Floyd gets very prog and if you haven't heard, do your ears a favor!

Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. Yes! One of the most criminally underexposed prog bands ever. Love IQ! Take the time and listen to the "Subterranea" album from start to finish - it's a trip worth taking, to say the least. "Frequency" is also amazing.

Thank you for listening to this ... you're the first to do so. Sorry about the typo. This was bassist John Jowitt's first album with IQ. He won bassist of the year so many times that he asked to not be considered again and now sponsors the award. He sadly left the band close to the same time as their brilliant keyboardist Martin Orford. They played together in Jadis for a while during their time in IQ. John went back to Arena for a time. I appreciate your platform for letting a lot of people know the genius of this song. King Crimson's "In The Court of the Crimson King" is considered the first progressive album by many - 1968. If you want to break new ground and be the very first I've seen (and Ive searched) try "The Answer" by Comedy of Errors on the Fanfare and Fantasy album. The whole album is about the loss of the keyboardist's wife and this song is like his recovery. It's amazing and emotional from a Scottish Band who are still relatively unknown. You two are so much fun and you're like Johnny Appleseed ... spreading the seeds of Prog!!

Great reaction guys, from another top tier prog band, IQ.... Excellent vocalist, somehow reminds me of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, as well as an underrated guitarist in Mike Holmes. As Nick hasn't heard some of the more recent releases, maybe you can both try Frequency (from Frequency), or The Road Of Bones (from The Road Of Bones)... Once again the Live versions on YT are excellent quality... Nick also mentioned Camel, (another prog band from the UK... I'm somewhat biased, and proud of the bands such a small country has produced over the years), they have a huge catalogue of wonderful music. Worth a delve when you guys find the time.... Cheers Bob

Prog started with Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. King Crimsons In The Court of the Crimson King was 1968.The Nice (Keith Emerson) were making music in 1966 and became ELP in 1970. Yes's first album was 1968 (play Survival to see how they would progress). The Simon Dupree Big Sound - Kites was a hit in 1967 and they became Gentle Giant. Genesis first album was 1969. and on and on and on.

Neo prog came in the very late 70s and early eighties with mainly Marillion but also IQ, pendragon or Pallas. The last ten years has seen some of the best from IQ. The Road of Bones was a very good album. Neil Durrant, I think took over keyboards and adds a much heavier fuller sound.

A quick and very incomplete summary: Progressive: King Crimson, Yes, EL&P, 70s to '80s Genesis, Some Rush albums, Camel Neo progressive: Marillion (Fish era), IQ, Arena, Pendragon IQ relay heavily on early Genesis style, in this song I see a subtle Genesis reference with the lyrics "Breaking the borders, the chaos of life" that to me seems a nod to "Wondering in the chaos the battle has left" from Genesis "Supper's ready" (1972). IQ keyboardist Martin Orford is a big Tony Banks' fan. His synth solo on "Further away" is reminescent of Tony's solo in Genesis "Down and out" from "And then there were three" Genesis album (1978) . Check it out.

I saw IQ in 1994 in San Jose’. Enchant opened for them but somehow we missed most of their set because my friends who joined my band Airshift got invited to the lobby to visit with them and we became friends with bass player John Jowitt and he would call us from England because they traded numbers. So 2 years before this John and the keyboard player Martin Orford started another prog band with guitarist singer Gary Chandler called Jadis. If you like IQ you will likewise become a Jadis fan. Their debut More Than Meets The Eye.(1992)

I'm so glad you made this track reaction ! This tune is one of my all time faves, I even use the intro for my phone call ring lol. These guys saved my life one day in 1986 when I acquired their album "The Wake" which imo filled the gap left by Genesis in the 80's as they went more pop oriented than their prog style they embraced during almost the whole 70 decade. Now that I'm sure you'll love their work, please do not forget the challenge I gave you with their "Subterranea" monument. It's so goooooood to share this music with you guys ! Keep up the good work and spreading good taste ;)

They are a grossly underrated band. They should be mentioned along with the kings of the genre. They are one of the bands that have kept progressive music alive over the years. Let me suggest the songs "Frequency" and "The Narrow Margin" as selections you might review in the future. There are so many great ones but, I don't want to get greedy. Thank you for giving them a listen.

Oh yeah! Thanks to react again to IQ.... ;-) I'm so happy you love them that much so soon, reminds me of discovering them with that particular album, back in 1993, after my military duties, helped me to pass over of a very sad break-up with the girl I was in loved with (I was 23). I've got everything from them since, and for the first time their last album seems harder to love than the others, all the others... IQ has this quality to be so good everytime, doing prog, Neo-prog, Genesis-Pink Floyd-King Crimson-Yes-Jethro Tull were the first in the early seventies (The Beatles perhaps the very first on Sergeant pepper's, Magical mystery tour, Abey road). IQ debuts were in 1984, along with Marillion, Pendragon, Twelfth night, Pallas and some others. Camel is more of a seventies follower to Genesis, love them so much too, if you have the time, discover the last 4 albums (Dust and dreams-Harbor of tears- Rajaz-A nod and a wink).... you will love I'm sure 100% ;-) All my friends I've known on concerts who are in prog fell in love with them instantly when I introduced them to IQ's universe.

Bands like King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes started to explore new fields and developed the foundation for what we think of as "prog" arround 1970. Progressive rock wasn't a "style" but an effort to go beyond traditional formats for popular music - taking influences from various styles and genres outside "pop/rock". Rush took influence from those and more. Jethro Tull started off as blues rock but did more progressive albums further on. The first progexcursions were of course made before by bands like The Beatles and The Moody Blues.

Most of the early neo-prog bands (Marillion, Twelfth Night, IQ, Solstice, etc.) started in the late 70s but didn't get to the point of releasing albums and attracting an audience until the early 80s. Marillion got a record deal with EMI/Capitol in '82, which was the brass ring all the other bands were chasing after, but none were able to match. In the case of IQ, they had to wait until '86 to get a deal through a small subsidiary of Mercury Records, but singer Peter Nicholls had already left by then (Ever is his return album.) They went in a more "commercial" direction for the next two albums, which didn't do anyone any favors. The label lost interest and actually imploded, leaving the band stranded. Like a lot of other bands they started their own label (Giant Electric Pea). IQ are a great band, and have an awesome sense of humor despite how serious the music sounds. In the early days they'd pull out songs like "Material Girl" for encores!

Sorry for this late comment to this song, but Neo Prog bands (early 80's to mid-90's) were heavily influenced by middle period Genesis, (Trick of a Tail to Duke). I mean most singers tried to mimic Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins vocally and I think Peter from IQ and Fish from Marillion, for me, were up there at the top. I hope to see more reactions to IQ. And if you really want to try a band that was influenced by prog of the 70's you must listen to The Flower Kings, especially if you want to hear a killer band sounding like classic Yes. I recommend "World of Adventures" off their first album "Back in the World of Adventures". You will not be disappointed. I love you guys and keep up the great work!

I follow IQ from the beginning and "Ever" was that album where I begun to get nuts everytime I heard it. Love it always. "Ever" brought their modern sound... followed by the epic "Subterranea". Now for Lex, I will recommand to listen to another neo prog band called Pendragon. Every woman who heard to Pendragon love it. Listen to "breaking the spell" or "Learning curve". It might remember you another epic band.

Also - because of your ending comments, I highly suggest "Field of Fallen Angels" from Martin Orford (the original keyboardist of IQ and this song). It's from his first solo album "Classical Music and Popular Songs." It features his bandmates from Jadis - John Jowitt (bassist of IQ and this song); Steve Christy (drums) and Gary Chandler (guitar and vocals). Martin plays multiple instruments including flute as he did on the beginning of this song. I know you will enjoy. Thanks again for reviewing Further Away!! Love you guys!

Probably can't play a lot of the newer IQ albums to just anybody - the lyrics are darker than usual (often about the end of the world and death of all souls) and the music is very heavy (interspersed with moments of melodic beauty, of course). But that's part of the band's musical evolution, and it's top notch if you're already a prog fan

IQ seems to be such a keyboard-centric band, and that’s why they are growing on me. And Peter Nicholas’ voice cuts through all of the other instruments, making it easy to understand the lyrics. The first time that I heard The Road of Bones, I was hooked on this band. If you enjoy fretless bass, Jack Bruce from Cream is worth a listen. I love Pino Palladino’s fretless bass on David Gilmour’s solo song called Murder. A lot of people think that Progressive Rock started with the release of King Crimson’s first album, In The Court of the Crimson King on 10-10-1969. There were releases from bands like Procol Harum, the Moody Blues, and The Nice before then, though. Whenever it started, it’s all good.

I’m about to dive in after watching your Marillion reaction. 😜🙄

Conocemos Mago de Oz muy bien! We’re barely getting deeper into Spanish prog but SO many have recommended a band named Invisible so we’re definitely going to check them out. From what we’ve heard it’s more 70’s prog, which sounds awesome. Son de Argentina🇦🇷. We recently did a reaction to one of the members, Luis Alberto Spinetta and fell in love.
