Also, in regards to the cable modem upgrade: Quite simply DOCSIS runs over up to 32 channels which is shared with your neighborhood, development, block, etc. Your neighbors probably have a 16-channel modem. Your really unfortunate neighbors might have an 8-channel modem. Upgrading to a 32-channel modem immediately puts you at a speed, latency, and consistency advantage regardless of what package you have. DOCSIS 3.1 operates in a separate band entirely from 3.0 with 3.1 generally operating between 258 MHz to 1218 MHz and 3.0 operating between 5 MHz to 85 MHz. A) Cable providers generally don't give out 3.1 modems unless the plan calls for it. B) The 10Gb CMTS (cable back-end) connection capability of 3.1 means you only need about 10% of the bandwidth to achieve full gigabit. 3.0 is exactly the bandwidth, i.e. for 686Mbps you need all 16 channels at peak speed and minimal interference. So even as your neighbors get home and load up some 4K Netflix your speeds remain strong and consistent.
@@aersn4locs For your modem you do need it to be certified for your ISP. This is because ISPs connect your house to the internet through your modem and so need it to be compatible with their services to communicate with it. Routers only convert the cable signal of the modem into Wi-Fi signals and that’s why you could connect any router you want to it. When shopping for one search for the “approved for _______” tag to make sure it will work with your ISP. (Not sure on the exact process of changing the modem once you have it though). Edit: grammar.
Thank you man! I was about to return the RT-AX86S that I got 3 days ago because I was getting 300-400mbps speeds on my iPhone 13 while I was getting the full 700mbps when I had my TP-LINK archer AC2600 😂 I thought I had a defective one but it was the QoS! Now I’m getting full speeds again!
I JUST bought this router (RT-AX86U) today. I have 4 smart TVs ,1 Mac Desktop, 1Macbook Pro, 1 Gaming PC, 4 Cell Phones, 1 wireless Printer, AC Thermostat, Vivint Security System, Garage Door opener and maybe 2 more things connected. This damn thing is a powerhouse! The app is just as awesome! No interruptions or lag at all! My wife is freaking out because I am excited and can't stop talking about it, she just like whatever...lol. Buy it! Don't hesitate! WIFI 6 is a MUST in EVERY DATA CONSUMING HOUSEHOLD! Peace and love everyone!
Hey Danny, I recently got the RT-AX86U, but I went with the Zaku II edition. I wanted something a bit more exciting to have on display than just a black router. So far it's been a really good experience.
i got stationed in okinawa. i havnt upgraded my router in over 5 years. when i was browsing the local tech store, i saw the AX86u gundam version. on a whim, i bought it. glad i did cause it is a great router. thanks for the great video.
I was thinking about buying this router this week to replace the router that spectrum gave me but would it still be ok if I bought this router and still had spectrums modem? Or eventually should I also upgrade and buy my own modem as well? And thank you for this video by the way 👍🏾
Hey, great review, Subscribed ! My new LG Oled and M1 pro are compatible with new router :-) XBOX X, well, not a real issue, I'm wired with Cat6 ;-) and my new Router will be place juste beside it 🙂. Tks !
Got 2x xaiomi ax3600s as wifi access points, and pfsense as my firewall, dhcp, etc. Got a bunch of wifi switches, speakers, doorbells, tablets, etc. Using pihole as well. Wifi 6 helps. No more buffering, etc. Also, the asus had the same specs as the ax3600, but at 2x the cost. Openwrt will be running on it soon enough.
I literally have like 50-60 devices, most of them being home automation devices (smart light switches, outlets, Alexa devices, ect.) and most of them won't work on anything other than the 2.4GHz wifi band. Will this work for me? I have Comcast Xfinity internet and use their cable modem/router/wifi and I do believe it is WiFi 6 but I'm running the home automation devices on a Netgear WAC124 access point connected downstream from the Xfinity router. I'm currently having several of my home automation devices disconnecting/connecting from the network randomly so I'm thinking the Netgear AP is overwhelmed and can't keep them all online at the same time so it's dropping the "low priority" devices and keeping the more frequently used devices online.
wow. good video man. I've been on an Asus AC1900P for a long time. Been looking for upgrades but don't want to spend 400 bucks. Subscribed. I will still wait a bit though. Need to see more reviews.
I’ve been using this one for quite a bit now and it’s been great. I’d like to take a look at some other WiFi 6 routers that are a bit less expensive and see how they do
@@DannysTechChannel I'll watch any reviews you have. Great review you did here. Although I know all the tech lingo as I'm in IT I found your review very refreshing. Not to much tech lingo but enough to inform people.
@@DannysTechChannel If I purchase the RT-AX86u can I use the mesh feature to connect to my current ASUS AC1900P ? And if so do you know if a stock firmware on the RT-AX86U connect with asus mesh with on my AC1900P with Tomato open source firmware?
You could but you’ll run into the same issue I am now. There is no dedicated backhaul on this router. You’ll want to find a tri-band use the mesh feature. Asus sells those as well. I’m looking into one for myself now
@@DannysTechChannel I've been running it for a while now. Mesh mode. 1900 seems to take over most devices. Which slows it down. Tried messing with the hand off range but only made it worse. So, I got the beast hardwired to my PC. Man. Transfer speeds to my media server is insane. 100 MBs max. Usually get about 85
I have version RT-AX86U-Pro. Any idea why Samsung mobiles (specifically S22 and S23) don't have internet access through 'Guest Network' unless I open intranet in the guest network (which obviously I don't want to do)? Seams to be know issue, still unresolved. Is the issue on Samsung or Asus side?
I am looking to update my router at some point too I just got a new modem because cox is going to switch my plan to 500 megs down and 10 up they said I had to get a new one if I want to keep my current plan I use my upload very heavily. I just got the the Arris SB8200 I have the SB6183 right now and the Asus RT AC87u. Hello from Casa Grande BTW.
I'm genuinely curious what Cox offers for upload on their gigabit plan. DOCSIS 3.1 supports 10Gb down and 1G up but Scumcast only offers 35 (yes, thirty five) Mbps up with my 'gigabit' plan when I live only a few miles from the east coast Internet backbone in Northern Virginia. All other providers offer gigabit up/down but I'm not sure about Cox.
Cox is pretty poor as well. They limit us to 30Mbps upload speeds as well. I am actually getting ready to move back to Virginia and will be getting Verizon Fios as we had in the past and they offer gigabit upload and download speed for less than my current rates with Cox.
Hi, i have an Asus AX86U and my highest result are 420/240 on 1000/330 network (next to the router - approx. 1 meter distance) with Samsung S10e (wifi 6, AX). How can i increase it?
Routers often advertise high speeds but those are combined, the 2,4ghz and the 5ghz. In a 2x2 device @80mhz you get a connection of 866Mbps + 300Mbps in the 2.4ghz = 1200.
Thanks for the video. I saw a couple of reviews stating that this router was among the best ones. That's a reason why I bought this exact model. However, I encounter very frequent 5Ghz connections drops, like the WiFi completely disappears from the WiFi list (on any device... PC, cellphone, ...). I made sure the firmware was up to date, that I was using a frequency band not used by my neighbours, tried turning off the 160Mhz band, the WiFi6 compatibility setting, tried turning off the beamforming (as it was suggested on a couple of forums). Did you ran into simiar issues ? With either WiFi6 devices, or Legacy ones ? One additionnal strange point... I wasn't able to connect my PS3 anymore to the 2.4Ghz WiFi... I haven't ben able to find the right seting to make it work yet. If you every have some insight on that, it'd be appreciated.
My issue was the frequency band receiving lots of interference. I switch it to a different channel(had to try 4 different ones) and finally found one that wasn’t getting tons of interference
I have the same Asus setup as you except that I have a DSL modem. Do you have a suggestion for a DSL model to pair up with this router? My connection is VDSL2.
I don’t have a recommendation unfortunately. I may have to do a follow up video to this because I just got Verizon Fios internet and didn’t need a modem at all! I just plugged my router into the Ethernet line and TADA, internet!
Nice vid man. Just upgraded to gigabit fiber 1000up/1000down about a week ago and decided I might as well upgrade router as well. Just ordered the RT-AX86U, should have it by Monday. Admittedly overkill right now since my Dlink AC2600 router is doing fine and the only wifi 6 device I currently own is my Asus laptop but I figure as more devices utilize wifi 6 in the future I will be ready to go. It's just me and my girlfriend in a 1350 square foot house with about 22 connected devices (mostly smart home devices). I am curious to see if this router provides any noticeable improvements vs my current setup.
Hi Danny, need your help. My Router (AX86U) got fried and ASUS gave me the Pro version as a replacement. There are two ports for WAN. The blue (WAN Port) and the green (2.5G LAN/WAN Port). I've got a different (confusing) version of the replies from ASUS. What is the green port is all about and can I plug the Modem straight into it instead of the blue? Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Just ordered one of these (well it's put on hold for me as out of stock till next year). Can't wait the ISP router weighs the same as a piece of paper and is total junk. Paying for 8-900Mb/s but only get 400 at point blank range, then it's 40-50Mb/s anywhere in the house
I brought this router and wanted to play counter strike browser online, but I am having a ping with 300 ++ in the oversea server even if I switch on game mode. and Went I switch to my 4g mobile connect to ping drop to 60 - 70. so isit my setup not correct or this router is suppose to be like this ? cause I know is a powerful router, it gives a very balanced connection.
So I have fiber optic so my router enthnet come right out of the wall so I plug it into my WAN on mine so I just bought this one will be able to do the same with it as I'm doing with my netgear. I don't have a modem. Also how much coverage do u get my house is 2100 Sq. Ft. Let me knoe
Yes. Since making this video I’ve moved to an area where I have Fiber internet and I plug directly into the Ethernet in my house. The coverage area may change depending on the interference in your house. Mine is about the same size without issue but I’ve heard of people having coverage problems with this router with less sq ft
It does work with Fios internet. I just got Fios and was able to plug my router directly into my house Ethernet line. I can’t speak for the g3100. I’ve never worked with it. Sorry
I’m moving to Arizona on the 30th and I just bought this router. When I call cox do I tell them I want the gigablast without their modem? This is my first time doing this stuff on my own and I work from home so I’ve got to get it right off the bat. Thank you 🙏
I don't have any WIFI 6 devices on my network, but can I set this router up the same way as my older dual band ASUS AC1900 with some devices on 2.4ghz and some on 5ghz? I don't want this router making that decision for me of where to put my device on which band since I won't be using WIFI6 right now. Thanks
Nope. Just faster peak speeds which are kind of subjective since users have different experiences such as interference and distances. They will perform very similar. Enjoy your new WiFi 6 router
@@DannysTechChannel thanks!! I kind of figured that would be the case. It seems like a lot of marketing for the up sale. IMHO the AX58U seems to pack a punch with features/performance/price. It seems like unless you need to cover a larger space, the AX58U is good enough 90% of the time.
Great one! I just got it last week but unfortunately I’m not getting more than ~120mbps using wifi on my iPhone 11 with a gig connection. I get ~900mbps with a wired connection, so I’m wondering how you got 940mbps using wifi.
As long as the modem has an Ethernet out cable, the router will work. What matters is if the modem will output the proper speed which the one you have does. Yes it will work fine
The range is improved due to the faster speeds. Speed deteriorates with distance and interference such as walls. WiFi 6’s faster speeds compensate for the signal loss due to range. So yes, it will do better through walls than WiFi 5, however the signal “strength” isn’t increased.
@@DannysTechChannel Okay. My current PC has WiFi 6 on the motherboard and I'm running it on WiFi, even when I play games, will it work just fine with WiFi 6? I'm running WiFi from my ISP Modem, which is just standard.
@@DannysTechChannel Can't I just buy this router, and just connect to the WiFi from both my phone and PC? And I was thinking of running my PS4 Pro with cable instead of WiFi.
Yes. All the devices will work with this router. The PC will be the only one to utilize the WiFi 6 speeds however. It really won’t be worth it at that point
I installed this router and it is awful, bad signal falling all the time, it was supposed to be an improvement for my current router and I end up returning it and I stayed with my previous router
The trouble with recommending routers is everyone’s situation is different. You’re location may have different types of interference than mine does. I just moved and my router got much worse signal than when I lived in Arizona. I changed a few settings and the thing is back up to pushing 924Mbps again over wireless. Sorry you had such trouble
The TP-Link routers are GARBAGE! I just got the TP-Link AX3000 and it is a piece of junk. My 5Ghz band drops about 1/2 way through to the back of my house. On my Cox modem I have full strength on 5Ghz and with my old ass AC2400 ASUS router I was getting 1 bar short of full. Also the router just randomly drops 5Ghz or won't assign out an IP address for whatever reason. I have 10 devices connected, most are smart devices that use very little bandwidth. TP-Link's interface is also really bad, feels like a UI from 5 years ago. I'm looking to return it and buying the RT-AX86U so hopefully it will work well.
@@DannysTechChannel I got the RT-AX86U today. It is hands down better than the TP-Link AX3200. Only thing I kind of miss that the TPLink had was a speed test that is ran on the actual router so you can see your speeds from the WAN port. Also the parental controls were a bit better on the TPLink.
Until you need ASUS support. Their incompetent techs took my ax86 from 300mb down to 1mb down then they couldnt reverse the settings and finally gave up. Said they would call back in 2 days which was 5 days ago. Returned their crap and bought a real mesh system (Eero)
not worth the money... very weak signal . I bought an asus ax88u and after 2 weeks, it dropped 5 ghz ... I returned it immediately. Then I took the asus ax86u and I had a very weak signal. I returned it too.I have a 4 year old cheap d-link router , bought for 10 euro, and it has a stronger signal than ax86u ... Asus routers are very weak, they break down very quickly.
