If you're looking for a new WiFi 6 router, check out this video where I compare 3 ASUS WiFi 6 Routers with a speed test. In this video, I test the ASUS RT-AX58U VS. ASUS RT-AX82U VS. ASUS RT-AX86U, and see which is dubbed the Best Asus WiFi 6 Router. They're also sometimes called: ASUS AX3000 VS ASUS AX5400 VS ASUS AX5700.

How to Speed Up Your WiFi by 1000%! WiFi 6 Router
I recently got fiber optic internet with 1 gigabit internet. So I upgraded from a Wireless N router to an ASUS WiFi 6 router. The results were a 10x WiFi speed improvement after upgrading to a WiFi 6 router. I did a shootout between the Asus AX58U, Asus AX82U, and the Asus AX86U to choose my next router. After looking at the options, I wondered if paying extra for a higher quality router made a practical difference. These are a few of my thoughts: My personal favorite was the Asus RT-AX82U because of its cool lights and performance. The best overall performance award goes to the Asus RT-AX86U although the Asus RT-AX82U wasn’t far behind it. Are you looking for a solid budget option? The ASUS RT-AX58U is a great option. Affiliate links are above for all 3 routers mentioned.

Are you looking to upgrade your router? If so, which router are you going to upgrade to?
@wvvliet86

What are the best settings for speed, at the AX86U? I have that router. I do have 600/40Mbps now, but next month I'll have 1000/1000Mbps. Using 2,5Gbit port as WAN and I've got 160Mhz enabled. My notebook with AX201 has linkspeed 2400 :)
@pauldittus
@pauldittus 3 года назад
@@wvvliet86 Nice! That's a huge improvement in the upload. So I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers 🙌

Would a router like this be worth it if you're directly connected to the router? Or is this more for wireless wifi connection?

@@tonyshoulders_ Hey Tony! Welcome to the channel fam 🙌 Great question. If you're looking for just a wired connection, you might not need wifi capabilities. Is it better to have a wifi connection to asus router or wired connection with xfi mesh gen 2 pods? I noticed some lag while gaming and I didn't have that kind lag when i was wired to Xfinity gateway modem ..im guessing its ping or latency because my download speeds are supposed be good for gaming it's at 150mbps

@pauldittus Год назад
I am sorry for the delay replying, Johnny. A direct wired connection from the source router is usually the best option. If it's a mesh wired connection, it could be a "it depends." I would run tests to see which has the lower ping for latency optimization. You can use a tool like www.speedtest.net/ to see what is faster. I would be curious to know which is faster. Hey friend! Great question. I haven't heard of the Netduma R3 before. When you say custom router are you talking about RGB or running custom firmware? If firmware, I don't believe that the RT-AX82U supports the popular Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. That said, I am using the native firmware that comes with the router. Since I have never tested the Netduma R3 I probably can't speak much about it. The RT-AX82U was my personal favorite when reviewing these particular routers. Welcome to the channel fam!

@pauldittus 3 года назад
Thanks creezeYT! What have you seen so far? Are you getting near the speeds promised by your ISP? I would suggest using a WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are polluted in your area. Than try selecting a channel that isn't as saturated in your area. Also as noted in one of the tests, make sure you're on the 5 Ghz connection as that will give you the fastest speeds when in close proximity. Right after turning on the router I sometimes had to toggle my wifi on my client on and off to connect to the 5 Ghz. Also if you can you might consider enabling DFS channels in the WiFi settings. Another thing to try is changing the QOS settings in the app. Let me know how it goes. There are a few other things we can try if those don't work. Cheers 😊!

Also I heard that it might take a little while before your connection is cleared by RADAR so you might need to wait a little before seeing better results after making changes to your router settings.

One thing I tried was resetting the router. I got better results after resetting my router. You can also turn the QOS settings off to see if that improves the speed of your test.

If you own the AX86u I would HIGHLY recommend ditching the stock firmware and downloading Asus Merlin firmware. Merlin firmware is MUCH better than the stock firmware. Has flex and cake qos capabilities. Also has a built in speed test. There is the ability to add Skynet firewall to the router in conjunction with the built in firewall. Also has TOR vpn added and so on. I was running that firmware on my Asus AX11000 and it was rock solid. Hoping Merlin adds the AX89x model to the supported routers soon but the AX86u is a supported router for the Merlin Firmware and it is free to install.

Hey friend! Great question. I would suggest first testing your wired connection and making sure you're getting the promised 1000/330 speed. I'm confused why you say upgrade to the 82U or 86U if you want more range, but your testing shows the best speed with the 58U at the longest range. Does it or does it not have better or equal range? Your limited testing does not identify that. Is that statement based off marketing or actual testing?
@pauldittus
@pauldittus 8 месяцев назад
Hey friend! Great questions. You are absolutely correct that my tests are limited. It's been 2 years since I had access to the routers so unfortunately I can't test them easily. There are definitely gaps in what I tested and my testing methods. I also didn't even show what I changed to make the speed improvements. First I will say, all 3 routers from my memory performed very well. I believe the primary thing I did to the 86U that helped it's performance was turn off the QoS feature. This change sped up the router in some of my testing. I can't remember if I tested the distance much after that change so again this could be a gap in testing. The other element that could be an issue here is whether or not certain router distance tests were done on the 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz band. For example at the distance test if the 58U was using the 2.4Ghz band and the others were still on the 5Ghz I could see that impacting the results greatly. I apologize for not having a more definitive answer. I want to thank you for your thoughtful comment. With all that said, I want to welcome to the channel 👍

Sorry but didn't the 58u perform the best at distance? You said to not get that if you want distance?? Also if you're going to do a test, do it fairly. I consistently get 700mb on my 58u at close range and 500 2 levels away in my house. You need to split the 2.4 and 5ghz channels and use a device capable of attaining the top speeds of the router
@pauldittus
@pauldittus 2 года назад
Good points, Ian. You are 100% correct that the 58U performed the best at the furthest distance in the test. And yes, it would be good to test the 2.5 vs 5 GHz performance separately. Additionally, I will say my testing environment in an apartment with competing wifi signals probably isn't the best for finding the ideal results of an individual router. However, it does give a similar area to compare results of routers in a real life environment. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Have a great week friend 🙌
@Ian-ev5tg
@Ian-ev5tg 2 года назад
@@pauldittus no worries. I myself live in a detached house with little interference from other wifi signals. I set this router up and haven't done any tweaking other than splitting the channels. In fact it's one of the main reasons I ditched the bt router as they stopped the ability to split the channels and they also don't provide WiFi 6 routers on the fttp 1gb package. The first thing anyone should do is split the channels. Choose which one is best for the device you're using. I agree, it's probably not the best all rounder for everyone. But when I was shopping around, I wanted the rt ax88u but it was way too expensive and way too overkill for my needs. I found this to be the best compromise for spacial footprint and performance. My galaxy tab s7 constantly achieves 7 to 800mb upstairs, which is one room up and 1 room over, always shows its connected at 1.2gbps and although it's not the 980mbps I get on ethernet, it's pretty damn good compared to the bt smart hubs 230mbpa in the same room.

@pauldittus 2 года назад
Hey friend, I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure just turning off the QOS setting after I reset the router did the trick. Some other ideas: I would suggest using a WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are polluted in your area. Then select a channel that isn't as saturated in your area. Hello my friend! You bring up good points. This was my first video on the channel so definitely areas for improvement. I had to answer many questions regarding this in the comments as a result. Regarding the tweaks for the results: I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds in close proximity. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app. All this said, the 82U is a awesome router. I was happy with the results of all 3 which made it a difficult decision. I will definitely keep your feedback in mind for future videos. Welcome to the channel!

Thanks but not thst Insightful og a review tbh. All the asus measure the same ping but you sorta claim that the extra 100mpbs speed makes the more expensive routers better for gaming. The Asus I'm just gonna warn everyone the Asus 82u is probably by far ur best pick as it doesn't have as much of the possibility of bricking like the other two I've been seeing reports of the other two routers bricking after the firmware update but the 82u has the lowest brick rate out of the three routers from what I've seen so far the latest firmware update is strong and stable for it and the worse that can happen in most cases with the Asus 82u is the connection drops from time to time that can potentially most likely be fixed unlike the other two that render the whole router useless

@@pauldittus no I haven’t been gaming in a long time but the ping on my speed tests are usually between 18 and 20 which is pretty good considering I don’t have fiber in internet (which have ridiculously low pings…so jealous lol). I am a chord cutter so watching iptv is very good. Hardly any buffering. Speed tests on iPhone usually hover around 700 mbps particularly using 160 MHZ band. People tend to get caught up on speed but stability is the most important thing on a network. Low ping, eliminating bottlenecks in networking setups and eliminating bufferbloat are way more important in my opinion. Even a gig network can have bottlenecks and bufferbloat but with a good set up most of the time that stuff can be mitigated to make sure your network is running as smoothly as possible. A good router helps tremendously too. 😁

@@pauldittus if you decide to use that Merlin Firmware there is a guy here on RU-vid that does a great job showing how to install it and the different features. Just search Eclipse Reviews and he breaks it down nicely. He has a few videos regarding Merlin firmware and shows how to install flex qos which is awesome because if you have a fast internet subscription like a gig you can run flex and it prioritizes data packets and doesn’t slow down your network at all. Cake qos on Merlin is better for slower networks 300 mbps and slower but same thing doesn’t drop your speed like a lot of qos protocols do. Using either of those took away any bufferbloat issues I had prior. Would run speed tests on dslreports dot com and got A+ ratings for my network quality. Definitely worth checking out!
